ABSTRACT. The author was born in France, into an academic and literary family, and ever since his earliest childhood has always been devoted to animals. While relating different episodes of his life, from childhood through to adulthood, he shows how he developed two driving ambitions, one for biology and the other for poetry. This unusual combination of interests ultimately led him to follow the two quite different directions, choosing to be both scientist and poet. The dual career path involved various surprises and difficulties that will be described.

ABSTRACT. A recently discovered drawing of a horse by Leonardo da Vinci gives us the opportunity to highlight the ubiquitous use of the golden ratio by the master, confirming the Greek inspiration of who was nicknamed the “new Phidias”. The horse drawn by Leonardo can be seen as an “ideal horse”, with perfect measurements for the body as well as the head, according to the “divine proportion”, i.e. the golden ratio. This also allows us to point out a very good approximation and simple geometric construction of the golden ratio. MOTS-CLÉS. Léonard de Vinci, nombre d’or, cheval, beauté et idéalisme.

. We aimed at searching in color art paintings through all art periods from Ancient Egyptian Art to Contemporary Art for sclerotic scatter (SS) and peripheral light focusing (PLF), using large-scale internet databases. These phenomena originate from the illuminated side of the eyeshell: limbal sclera for SS or cornea for PLF. They end at the darkness of the opposite limbal scleral side, where they are either scattered (SS) or concentrated (PLF) forming a clear arc or spot of light, respectively ("light through darkness"). We found SS and PLF in 83 and 2 paintings respectively out of 113,962 paintings analyzed. These forms of objective chiaroscuro help to reconstruct a basic sense of eyeball modelling by bringing the limbus out of the shadows. Among the paintings with SS, most were painted during the following periods: Renaissance (44), Baroque (15), Rococo (11). Sixty-one of the paintings with SS have a dark background compatible with the fact that SS is more easily observed under low ambient light illuminance ("light through darkness"). subtle, rare of see them a new light, to their proper treatment and restoration and is likely to enhance their economic value.

ABSTRACT. Was the 17 th century French artist Georges de La Tour in Italy?
