Our cities are «on fire». Does the responsibility lie with the topography and the symbolism of a place, or with the position of the individual in the social scene ? The aspect of certain places can have an influence on the quality of life. Yet architecture cannot be responsible for the problems of our society and cannot solve them when they are caused by social division and ghettos. The architect is not a demiurge, he neither makes nor unmakes the city, which is governed by politics.

The authors have been conducting a survey on violence in secondary schools in and about Strasbourg. Within the framework of this research-work, they have tried, with the help of teachers and students, to define violence and how it is perceived. Their aim is to think about the ways to react, effectively but without undue alarm, in the face of these events, which are not to be minimized.
