Workers' housing estates, in Mulhouse in particular, formed, in the nineteenth century, the subject of medical thesis. Why did Doctor A. B. Bertele choose this subject ? He was aware of the great changes in urban environment, of an increasing poverty due to the industrial revolution and of the difficulty of practising medecine. Doctor Bertele was a forerunner in the field of public health and medical sociology.

Our cities are «on fire». Does the responsibility lie with the topography and the symbolism of a place, or with the position of the individual in the social scene ? The aspect of certain places can have an influence on the quality of life. Yet architecture cannot be responsible for the problems of our society and cannot solve them when they are caused by social division and ghettos. The architect is not a demiurge, he neither makes nor unmakes the city, which is governed by politics.

The authors have been conducting a survey on violence in secondary schools in and about Strasbourg. Within the framework of this research-work, they have tried, with the help of teachers and students, to define violence and how it is perceived.
