In the context of the contemporary debate on religion, let me formulate a thesis on the border of cultural anthropology and sociology as follows: “If the researcher manages to realize his cognitive limitations and at the same time honestly and critically listens to “what man has said” the researcher and the subject together are able to convincingly answer difficult questions about truth within the spiritual culture” Importantly, building an atmosphere of honesty refers to the researcher / respondent relationship, as a result, the researcher sometimes has to acknowledge failure in confrontation with reality which is “a labyrinth of alleys and crevices”. Otherwise, you may find that you “hear the words but not the music” (C. Geertz). That’s to say, not every interpretation leads the discovery of the truth – and only so-called “good” interpretation. [spiritual culture / religion, religious / magical ritual, etic / emic description, “good” interpretation]

This study hypothesizes the emergence of social evolution in northeast Africa, about 70,000 years ago. The combined emergence of syntactic language and collaborative groups generated a process of systematic social change. Spoken language itself and its speaking community, as they solidified, became the first social institutions. A deductive theory formalizes the emergence of language in a group of youths, tracing the “institutional evolution” of their community in a model inspired by Darwinian logic. The model relies on innovative variation in creating institutions, on institutional inheritance by succeeding generations, and a process of social selection that preserves the institutions seen as fit. It is argued that the articulation of this theory, with its testing on evidence from the late Pleistocene era, should help sort out relations among the many current research projects in human biological, cultural, and social evolution. [social evolution, syntactic language, we-group behavior, institutional change, social selection]

The age-old custom of hereditary chieftainship which was changed into hereditary Gaon Burah (GB) by the British colonial power is still in practice among the Sumi tribe of Nagaland. The article is an attempt towards understanding hereditary chieftainship practice in its historicity among the Sumi tribe of Nagaland. In doing so, the article dwells upon the inherent power structure and key players and their respective functions within it. The article notes that in earlier times, the Sumi villages were governed by the hereditary chiefs or Kukami with assistance from their advisors and helpers. The social, political, economic, and religious roles were carried out by these functionaries. As these were exclusively male members of the Sumi tribe, the article terms it as the defining characteristic of Sumi “masculinity.” The article contends this gender role by underlining significant roles and functions performed by female members of the Sumi tribe and strengthens this argument by bringing in the case of Teli Kivelimi, a prominent Sumi woman village chief. [Northeast India, hereditary chiefs, Gaon Burah, village governance, Sumi women, gender, British colonialism]
