A strict dichotomy of gender and work roles has long characterized the offshore trawler fishery. Men’s constantly varying work period, about ten days sea time to every forty-eight hours ashore, forces wives to become reluctant matriarchs, a role they must drop when their husbands land. Incongruity of expectations and behaviour is thus built in. Successful adjustment to sea-time roles by both is often dysfunctional to family stability, and to the health and recreation of the labour force. Women’s double-role strategies are described using ethnographic and interview data. These strategies vary with the historically changing structures of the industry, kinship and community; with their stage in the life cycle; with the expectations of husband and wife; and with the constraints imposed by vessel schedules and company policies.

Survey data from eight Toposa villages were used to examine the demographic effects of polygyny upon this Southern Sudanese agro-pastoralist population. Direct age standardization of fertility rates revealed lower fertility for women in polygynous unions, as measured by maternal age and marital duration. Indirect techniques of mortality estimation indicated higher childhood mortality for offspring of polygynous marriages. The underlying rationale for these demographic differentials is attributed to Toposa social structure, including the economic value of women, gerontocracy and residential patterns.

Dreams and visions are conceived by the Dene-tha of northwestern Alberta as "ways of knowing with the mind". In particular, dreams and visions are a means through which the spirits of deceased persons may be encountered and observed. In some cases the spirit of the deceased is "seen" or "known" to enter a woman’s body to reincarnate as a child. This "knowledge" determines the way in which Dene-tha represent themselves to themselves and to each other. The purpose of this paper is to describe and analyze the Dene-tha representation of self as reincarnated individual. Thus, the paper draws the implications for an anthropological understanding of dreams, visions, and self among an aboriginal population.

The architecture, organization and activities within a large shopping mall are described and analyzed. The mall is shown to both reflect and recreate the values of middle class Canadian culture. Both explicit and implicit comparisons are made with Zambian culture.

The social hierarchy of Elizabethan England was stoutly and exactly "hinged". At every point ranks touched in the hierarchy, cultural instruments worked to establish a connection between them. The purpose of the present paper is to give an anthropological account of two of these cultural instruments, showing how they served the concept and the practice of Elizabethan social organization. The cultural instruments in question are courtesy and child exchange.

Cette lecture contextuelle des données sépulcrales et iconographiques mochica met ainsi en relief l’existence d’une « stratégie du sacré », élaborée et contrôlée par les groupes dominants, lois de manifestations funèbres. L’hypothèse défendue ici est que le contexte mortuaire mochica a constitué un lieu efficace pour la transmission, la propagation et la perpétuation du message idéologique produit par l’élite politico-religieuse, dans les diverses régions qu’elle dominait.

In the last decade, Canadian anthropologists have evidenced new interest in the public promotion of their field and the broader dissemination of their research findings. The present paper is intended as a contribution to this vital issue. It reviews recent efforts to increase anthropology’s profile. It assesses the interaction of one anthropologist with the media. It hopes to encourage the media participation of anthropologists, and to suggest some of the strategies at their disposal.

I explore how comparison might look from a hermeneutic perspective. I use the discussion as a means to clarify some of the positive attributes of hermeneutics and to respond to some of the criticisms and misunderstandings to which interpretive anthropology has been subject.
