"Ten Days a ’Grass Widow’ - Forty-eight Hours a Wife":Sexual Division of Labour in Trawlermen’s Households “十天‘草寡妇’-四十八小时妻子”:拖网工人家庭中的性别分工

M. Binkley, V. Thiessen
A strict dichotomy of gender and work roles has longcharacterized the offshore trawler fishery. Men’s constantlyvarying work period, about ten days sea time toevery forty-eight hours ashore, forces wives to becomereluctant matriarchs, a role they must drop when theirhusbands land. Incongruity of expectations and behaviouris thus built in. Successful adjustment to sea-time roles byboth is often dysfunctional to family stability, and to thehealth and recreation of the labour force. Women’s double-rolestrategies are described using ethnographic and interviewdata. These strategies vary with the historicallychanging structures of the industry, kinship and community;with their stage in the life cycle; with the expectationsof husband and wife; and with the constraints imposed byvessel schedules and company policies.

Demography and Polygyny in a Southern SudaneseAgro-pastoralist Society
Pub Date : 2022-02-04 DOI: 10.7202/1085913ar
E. Roth, K. Kurup
Survey data from eight Toposa villages were used toexamine the demographic effects of polygyny upon thisSouthern Sudanese agro-pastoralist population. Direct age standardizationof fertility rates revealed lower fertility forwomen in polygynous unions, as measured by maternalage and marital duration. Indirect techniques of mortalityestimation indicated higher childhood mortality for offspringof polygynous marriages. The underlying rationalefor these demographic differentials is attributed to Toposasocial structure, including the economic value of women, gerontocracy and residential patterns.

Representation of Self and ReincarnationAmong the Dene-Tha deni - tha
Pub Date : 2022-02-04 DOI: 10.7202/1085909ar
Jean-Guy A. Goulet
Dreams and visions are conceived by the Dene-tha ofnorthwestern Alberta as "ways of knowing with the mind".In particular, dreams and visions are a means throughwhich the spirits of deceased persons may be encounteredand observed. In some cases the spirit of the deceased is"seen" or "known" to enter a woman’s body to reincarnateas a child. This "knowledge" determines the way in whichDene-tha represent themselves to themselves and to eachother. The purpose of this paper is to describe and analyzethe Dene-tha representation of self as reincarnated individual. Thus, the paper draws the implications for an anthropologicalunderstanding of dreams, visions, and selfamong an aboriginal population.

Les Mochica et la mort
Pub Date : 2022-02-04 DOI: 10.7202/1085910ar
Daniel Arsenault

I explore how comparison might look from a hermeneutic perspective. I use the discussion as a means to clarify some of the positive attributes of hermeneutics and to respond to some of the criticisms and misunderstandings to which interpretive anthropology has been subject.
