The marketing of information services will help to improve the image and to attract more users to the library and hence it is an important area of interest to university libraries. This study aims: 1) to understand the existing information services and products, 2) to study the marketing orientation based on four marketing mix variables such as product, place, price and promotion, 3) to study the approach of librarians to marketing activities and 4) to identify the problems encountered in marketing of information products and services of the university libraries in Kerala. The data for the study collected from the university librarian or in-charge of four university libraries in Kerala -Kerala University Library, Mahatma Gandhi University Library, Cochin University of Science and Technology Library and CH Mohammed Koya Library of University of Calicut. All the university libraries in Kerala have some sort of conventional as well as IT enabled information services and products that can be marketed. The librarians have a positive attitude towards marketing. The identified problems encountered are lack of trained staff and less demand for the existing resources and services. It is indeed in the interest of the university libraries in Kerala to initiate new information services and products suitable for the different user groups. Also, it was found that university libraries in Kerala need better promotional activities. For the effective and efficient marketing, the university libraries should have a separate marketing division with a definite marketing plan.

Clinicians have been found to need more than mere primary information from sources such as MEDLINE and medical journal outlets. Information that will be useful for busy clinicians during patient care or at the bed side must be filtered for relevance, have labels for strength of recommendation and must be easily accessed. Point-of-care (POC) information resources belong here. However, their usage and distribution of use among clinicians in Nigeria have not been studied and the reason for this paper. Survey research was employed and questionnaire used to collect data from clinicians in a tertiary health institution in Southwest Nigeria on their use of fifteen selected POC information resources. The study found that while the doctors mostly (68.57%) use search engines such as Google to meet their POC information needs, very few (17.14%) will however use POC information resources. On their usage of POC information resources, the study found that eMedicine (14.29%) and 5-minute Clinical Consult (14.29%) and Clinical Evidence (11.43%) were mostly used on daily basis where eMedicine (17.14%), Evidence-Based Medicine Reviews (11.43%) and Clinical Evidence (8.57%) were the ones used more on weekly basis. On the overall use average, the study found that eMedicine (21.91%), BMJ's Clinical Evidence (16.19%), and Clinical pharmacology-Elsevier (13.33%) and Cochrane Library (10.47%) were the mostly used POC information resources by clinicians in the tertiary health institution. However, the test of hypothesis on how users are distributed on POC information resources in the hospital shows a non-uniform distribution. Recommendations were made based on these findings.

Like others, Bangladesh government has taken initiative to deliver government services electronically in addition to traditional format. At present, Bangladesh is implementing e-government scheme under a political vision—Digital Bangladesh. The National ICT Policy of the country is also very much specific in spelling out the actors, allotted time-periods, and outcomes. Such endeavor is providing citizens with the convenience of receiving government information and services on their own terms, which has brought a key change in the government-citizen interactions. This study, therefore, intends to find the perception of citizens about the electronic delivery of services comparing it to the traditional format using mass-user survey. The findings indicate that occupational track affects the perception. The paper concludes that most of the stakeholders in Bangladesh favor the electronic format over the conventional one regarding efficiency in service delivery.

This paper aims to understand how the research scholars of faculty of applied sciences in the University of Kerala manage personal information through internet services. Personal Information Management(PIM) refers to a set of activities a person perform in order to acquire or create, store, organize, maintain, retrieve, use and distribute personal information for different purposes. Questionnaire method was employed for data collection and out of the 59 respondents, 69.6% females and 30.4% male scholars are using their lap tops for managing personal information. Majority of the respondents prefer e-mail as the most used internet service for personal information management with a mean value 2.41. Majority of the respondents agree that they know more about managing their personal information and apply it on research work. The study also revealed that major difficulties faced by research scholars are inadequate awareness of managing information via Internet. Most of the time research scholars store only that personal information that they want to share with others. Majority always afraid of putting their sensitive personal information at internet services because of privacy concern.

Data analytics is playing a central role in deriving useful information from large amounts of data available online in a variety of domains and applications. Analytics employs a wide array of methods ranging from classical statistical techniques to those exploiting the visual and cognitive capabilities of human users. In spite of all its capabilities, analytics at present seems to suffer from significant limitations in dealing with unstructured data and knowledge. This article explores the limitations and defines key requirements to be met by future developments in analytics. The article concludes with a sketch of true knowledge analytics which is capable of delivering insights from knowledge structures, not just tabular data.

Knowledge Management is a new field encompassing several disciplines including library and information science. Knowledge Management can be incorporated into library operations to promote job effectiveness, thereby offering the opportunity to expand the role of libraries in other areas where librarians have had little impact in the past. This study summarizes knowledge management practices and its applications in academic libraries, which requires academic librarians to reappraise their functions and expand responsibilities to effectively contribute to meet the needs of a large and diverse university community. This work adopted survey research method and used questionnaire to generate data, which were handed out to the respondents, who are professional librarians at the Ekiti State University Library. These people were selected because of the pivotal role they play in the day to day running of the library. The data were analyzed using simple percentages and tables. Among other things, the result showed that 80% of the respondents share knowledge either formally or informally within the library. 60% of the respondents agreed that the library had used partnership with other libraries to acquire knowledge to sharpen their skills in this dynamic information technology environment. On the importance of Knowledge Management Practices (KMP) in the library, 80% of the respondents agreed that it is good to identify and protect strategic knowledge present in the library. 70% agreed that KMP is important because of the need to identify and fill knowledge glut for the smooth running of the library and 90% said to map and capture the internal and external knowledge available to the library is the reason KMP is important. Requirements for KMP and the benefits of KMP in the library were also estimated. Recommendations were made based on the findings.

This paper discusses the experience in developing an open, flexible, and cost-effective e-journal gateway for libraries that subscribe to multiple e-journals or e-journals databases. The system is developed using tools like WinISIS and GenIsisWeb, supported by UNESCO and BIREME. Its model is developed at Central Library of the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Thiruvananthapuram for its e-journals management. This concept can be expanded as an open national e-journals gateway, in which different libraries are subscribing to different e-journals databases from different vendors either individually or as part of library consortia. This paper also discusses the technology used, its advantages and features.

Standards are being used for construction of thesauri from their inceptions. Previously thesauri were designed and maintained manually. But the advancement of ICT gives us the opportunity to execute the same through machine-readable environment. To incorporate thesaurus database electronically, the thesaurus standards also changed accordingly over the time. Concept of data model has emerged for efficient utilization of knowledge organization systems like classification schemes, subject taxonomies and thesauri. New standards are capable to guide in designing and maintaining thesaurus in digital environment and also make them inter-operable among various platforms by using SKOS as domain model and XML as lingua franca. The SKOS-compatible thesaurus standard also supports multilinguality in Unicode based data processing environment. ISO-25964 standards are designed in two parts for constructing and maintaining a SKOS complaint multilingual thesaurus.

Examines quantitatively the growth and development of bioinformatics research in India in terms of the publication output as reflected in Web of Science (WoS) database for the period 2006–2010. The bibliographic details of 577bioinformatics data obtained from the WoS database were studied and it was found that among the total bioinformatics contributions, nearly half are from India. Majority of the contributions were multi-authored and the degree of collaboration was 0.93 and most of the publications were in the form of journal articles. BMC Bioinformatics published by Bio Med Central ranks first position with 28 publications followed by In Silico Biology (IOP press) with 24 publications. IISc, Bengaluru is the most productive bioinformatics research institute in the country followed by ISI, Kolkata. Delhi is the leading state with 6.41% of the total Indian contribution in bioinformatics followed by West Bengal with 5.37% publications. The data set has been found to be not a perfect fit for the Bradford's law of scattering.
