It was on December 9th, 2012 that an Ayurveda Education Summit was held in Bhopal,Madhya Pradesh, as a part of the 5th World Ayurveda Congress. Ten panelists possessing expertise in administration and research in the field of Ayurveda education were present during the summit. The authors of the present piece of ‘editorial’ too were the participants in the event as panelists.Given the present status of Ayurveda education in India, we think it is worth recapitulating the major recommendations of the said summit. These proposals are especially pertinent on the eve of the 6th World Ayurveda Congress scheduled to be held in November 2014. In this editorial, we present a re-drafted summary of the major recommendations that emerged during the summit. We hope that the relevant points are taken up by the Department of AYUSH and Ministry of Health and Family Welfare for future course of action. RAISE THE STANDARDS OF GRADUATE LEVEL AYURVEDA EDUCATION It has been noted that the extent of practical exposure to various clinical skills is the most important lacuna in the current system of graduate-level education in Ayurveda sector. Teaching is generally perceived as memory oriented instead of being analysis, skill and understanding oriented. RE-WORK THE MINIMUM STANDARD REGULATIONS Further, the department of AYUSH needs to re-consider the Minimum Standard Regulations That have been notified in 2012. They have led to a dilution in the rigor of the various educational programs. It is worth noting that there has also been uproar against these regulations in the recent past by the teachers and the students which has led to some modifications in these regulations. However, it is to be noted that such policy decisions must consider the welfare of the students andthe teachers with an aim of improvising the overall standards of education. Therefore, there is a need for incorporating a few external members possessing expertise in educational policy in the Education Committee of the Central Council of Indian Medicine Establish local PPTAs (Parent-Patient (Public)-Teacher Associations) at each college level It has been observed that the practice of appointing teachers only ‘on documents’ and not actually recruiting them physically in many colleges, is diluting the standards of education. Similarly, some institutions though register (admit on paper) students, don’t actually teach and train them. These students rarely attend their duties in theses colleges and turn up only during the examinations and inspections. As a result, the data in the dissertations submitted by these students are not reliable. This practice of ‘on-paper teachers’ and ‘on-paper students’ must be stopped. To address this, establishment of PPTA’s needs to be made mandatory.

Introduction: Many scholarly journals focused on Ayurveda research have been in existence for many decades, however, despite their long history and firm establishment in the scholarly community, peer review has been introduced recently. In academic publishing, the goal of peer review is to assess the quality of articles submitted for publication in a scholarly journal. The review could be either pre-publication or post-publication. The post-publication peer review has not yet gained wide popularity and acceptance in the world of science. Generally, three types of pre-publication peer review are followed: single-blinded, double-blinded and open review. Most of the journals publishing Ayurveda Research follow blinded pre-publication review. Objective: To analyze critically and report the status of peer reviewed journals of Ayurveda being published. Methods and Materials: A comprehensive search was undertaken and relevant print and online sources were consulted. A list of 83 periodicals / journals was prepared and analyzed on the basis of regularity, subscription fee, periodicity, publisher, mode of dissemination and year of establishment. A quality assessment of the journals was also done keeping the usually accepted norms of scientific publishing. Results: We could list 20 monthly, 37 quarterly, 15 bimonthly and 5 half yearly and 1 yearly periodical. However, clear data was not available for 5 periodicals. Five journals provided discount to students. Seven journals were irregular in periodicity and three were found to have been discontinued. English (62) is being used as the language of communication in most of the periodicals followed by bilingual (9), multilingual (4), Hindi (6) and Gujarati (2). Out of all the periodicals, 47 declared themselves as ‘peer reviewed’ and 31 were of general (non- peer reviewed)nature. Further, 5 of them belonged to the category of newsletters. 27 were available in print, 30 were available online and 26 were available both in print and online formats. Though, there are a huge number of journals publishing research on Ayurveda, it appears that these journals are still in the stage of infancy.During last couple of years, Ayurveda sector is witnessing mushrooming of new journals, mostly open access and online ones. However, most of them are struggling to maintain the generally accepted academic standards. Researchers need to be careful and make sure that their work is not being communicated to predatory journals. Conclusion: There is an urgent need to create awareness among Ayurveda Researchers regarding these problems. Further, there is also a need to conduct frequent training programs on research methodology and scientific writing skills to the Ayurveda researchers. Over all, it was observed that, there are no standard / uniform guidelines applicable for Ayurveda journals. Though certain efforts have been attempted earlier, there is a need for streamlining the strategies.

Tridosha (humoral) theory of Ayurveda is itself complete and explains all the physiological as well as pathological changes in health and disease. Tridoshas which regulate all the activities of the body, are affected by external environmental (diurnal & seasonal), food and other physical and mental condi-tions including age of a person. As long as the doshas remain in physiological limits, homo stasis of the body is maintained and contributes towards heal tho When this exceeds the body threshold, it disturbs body homeostasis contributing a factor exhibiting the body liable to develop a disease. The seers of Ayurveda have given a great emphasis on the problem and have advocated seasonal conducts (Ritucharya), diurnal conducts (Din-Ratricharya) and other miscellaneous instructions including dietary regimens, putting the human wise to preserve health and avoid illness which a person is liable if he does not maintain his body so as to deal with the natural, unavoidable, biological doshic rhythms in our body.

Yoga is one of the fast reviving sciences which has received worldwide attention during recent years. This arousal of interest in Yoga appears largely for its health potentials. A study of the ancient concepts of Yoga in related classics would reveal that Yoga as initially conceived is essentially a spiritual discipline. It was developed in good old days to raise the level of Consciousness in an individual by way of continued sadhana on a prescribed path. There was no design to develop Yoga as a health science, though practitioners of Yoga enjoyed good mental and physical health. On the contrary, the assessment of the current trends indicates that Yoga has migrated substantially from a pure spiritual discipline to a scientific discipline, from a matter of individual sadhana to a subject of social interest and from a limited Indian art to an international science of global significance. Thus Yoga has developed fast in all its dimensions. But the central stream of revival and development of Yoga is in the direction of promotive health care. It would be seen that Yoga in ancient times was conceived as a scientific discipline and was added with appropriate technology for application of the same for human uplift. As also stated by Professor Anantharaman ( Personal Communication ) the expressions like ‘Adhyatma Vidya’ and (Yoga-Vidhi’ seen in Kathopanisad and ‘Brahma Vidya and Yoga Sastra in Bhagvadgita indicate that Yoga was conceived in good old days as Science (Vidya) It is presumed that the comprehensive practice of Yoga would impart above qualities to the personality of an aspirant. Besides, another important dimension of the effect of Yoga on mental health would be a reduction in the level of anxiety. Practice of Yoga helps an individual in coping with anxiety and thus makes the life comfortable and free from too much of anxiety and tension. Thus Yoga may be utilised as a promotive and preventive care for mental health. In addition, appropriate schedules of Yoga Therapy may be developed also as a method of curative treatment of early psychosomatic diseases.
