Larval dispersal is an important component of the population ecology of many lepidopteran species. However, measuring dispersal in the field is notoriously difficult, labour‐intensive and often expensive. An indirect method for estimating larval dispersal is outlined. Frass and exuviae of processionary caterpillars, O. lunifer, present at the base of host trees are used to estimate the number of migration events to and from trees in a season. Estimates using this method compared favourably with estimates from a mark‐recapture method. The technique can be used to estimate rates of dispersal at a large number of localities by a single researcher, allowing dispersal to be compared between different populations

Toxicological and Oviposition Suppression Responses of Field Populations of the Australian Sheep Blowfly, Lucilia cuprina (Wiedemann) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) to the Pyrethroid Cypermethrin 澳大利亚羊蝇(双翅目:灰蝇科)对拟除虫菊酯的毒理学及抑卵反应

Pyrethroid oviposition suppressants are an alternative to cyromazine for the prevention of flystrike on sheep by organophosphate resistant sheep blowflies. Laboratory bioassays were used to determine the relationships between toxicological responses to, and oviposition suppression by, cypermethrin in Australian field populations of L. cuprina, which might indicate pre‐selection for resistance. There was no correlation between the toxicological responses of adult and larval blowflies to cypermethrin in over 100 populations sampled. Toxicological responses of field larvae were substantially different from that of the susceptible strain LS but the oviposition suppression response and adult toxicological response of LS was within the range of field responses. As well, larval responses to cypermethrin were significantly correlated with those to diazinon. This suggests a low‐level cross‐resistance between the two compounds. Although organophosphate resistance is widespread in field populations, and despite 13 years of pyrethroid use on sheep, the low‐level cross‐resistance to cypermethrin has not interfered with susceptibility to oviposition suppression by cypermethrin.

We report the amblyseiine genera Paraphytoseius and Paraarnblyseius from Australia for the first time based on collections from subtropical to tropical rainforests, and provide diagnoses for both genera. Paraphytoseius hilli sp.n. is described from Queensland, P. seychellensis Schicha and Corpuz‐Raros is reported from numerous collections in Queensland and both sexes are described in terms of currently used setal designations. Paruurnblyseius dinghuensis (Wu and Qian) is reported from New South Wales and Queensland. A key to the world species of Paraphytoseius is presented.

Life History Comparisons of Ground‐ and Canopy‐Nesting Populations of Ochrogaster lunifer Herrich‐Schaffer (Lepidoptera: Thaumetopoeidae): Evidence for Two Species? 地面和冠层巢巢蚁群的生活史比较(鳞翅目:蝶科):两个物种的证据?

Populations of Ochrogaster lunifer Herrich‐Schaffer display different larval behaviours (ground‐nesting and canopy‐nesting), suggesting the existence of two or more species. Here, the behaviour and biology of ground‐nesting populations are described from extensive surveys in southeastern Queensland. Females oviposit at the base of the host tree, covering the eggs with scales from the anal tuft. The larvae are processionary and pass through eight instars. First instars do not feed, remaining at the base of the tree trunk within the scale mass. Second instars ascend the tree in single file in the morning to feed in the canopy each day, returning to the scale mass after several hours. Later instars feed only at night. Six new host plants are recorded: five species of Acacia, and one species of Casuarina. Predators and parasitoids recorded on 0. lunifer included chalcidoids, dermestids, tachinids and a predatory pyrrhocorid bug. The results of the study highlight a number of major differences between ground‐nesting and canopy‐nesting populations. Differences include habitat and geographical distribution; host plant range; number of instars; size and colour of final instar; size of adult female; oviposition site and larval behaviour. These differences provide further evidence for the existence of two species.

Cuticular hydrocarbon profiles were obtained for adult Chortoicetes terminifera collected from Bimerah in Queensland, Hillston and Boorowa in New South Wales, and Moora in Western Australia. No significant differences were found between male and female locusts from Bimerah, nor between males from any of the four different geographical locations.

The efficacies of C23 and C24 petroleum spray oils for the control of citrus leafminer were determined. Both oils significantly suppressed leafminer infestations to similar levels. Combining the C23 oil with either cupric hydroxide or copper oxychloride did not reduce its efficacy against the leafminer. The ability to mix these copper fungicides with petroleum spray oils will allow spray application costs to be reduced.
