Community-Engaged Teaching: Lessons from a Participatory History Project 社区参与式教学:参与式历史项目的经验教训

How can we create opportunities for students to gain experience in community-engaged scholarship that truly benefits the community given the constraints of the academic calendar, students’ varied capacity to develop reciprocal and responsive community relationships, and the tendency for community-engaged research to instrumentalize community partners in service to academic deliverables? This paper explores one attempt to meet this challenge: an experimental graduate course in community development that linked course content to a participatory history project. Designed as a Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) study, instructors studied the instructional process as well as outcomes for students and community partners. We find that the project—while not without difficulty— provided a valuable opportunity to develop skills and relationships while contributing to a project that both students and partners found meaningful and relevant. The paper explores the experiences for students and community partners, as well as key course design elements, and considers implications for other community-engaged courses.

Benefits of Community-University Partnerships in Rural Settings: Lessons Learned from an Inclusive Science Day Event 社区大学伙伴关系在农村环境中的好处:从包容性科学日活动中吸取的教训

This article reports findings from an Inclusive Science Day event that was hosted at a rurally located discovery museum. The event was collaboratively planned and hosted by two undergraduate student organizations from a local university. The university students planned eight inclusive science stations that were supplemented by six museum-developed stations. Each station was planned to meet the needs of a variety of learners. The event was very well attended, with approximately 150 visitors who ranged in age from infants to older adults. The research study reports findings from a survey of 22 caregivers who attended the Inclusive Science Day event. Findings present relevant information about the benefits of embracing a community-university partnership model and suggestions for facilitating a collaboratively planned inclusive science event. The implications highlight the importance of inclusive informal learning practices and partnership development in all locales. While the research is particularly relevant for rural stakeholders, it also provides useful considerations for all settings.

Using Social Network Analysis to Visualize Networks in American Indian Health Research 使用社会网络分析可视化网络在美国印第安人健康研究

The Collaborative Research Center for American Indian Health (CRCAIH) is a transdisciplinary, collaborative center focused on building American Indian tribal research infrastructure. Funded by the National Institute of Minority Health and Health Disparities in 2012, it was created as a platform to join tribal communities and researchers in South Dakota, North Dakota, and Minnesota to develop research infrastructure and stimulate research in American Indian health. The CRCAIH infrastructure has created a large network of transdisciplinary research partnerships. To understand the initial development of the CRCAIH network and understand the broader impact it has had on American Indian and Alaska Native health research, CRCAIH undertook a network analysis based on publications by collaborators working with and within CRCAIH. The network analysis showed how far the CRCAIH network went in a short period of time to create a platform for networking to build collaborations and further stimulate research with American Indian communities.

Residents’ experiences provide rich insight into the factors that drive widening social and health disparities, and those experiences are not homogeneous. Only through attending to people’s lived experiences will society begin to see these as issues of the entire community, and only by engaging residents in the process of community change can the kinds of change that are needed ever be achieved. Photovoice is a participatory qualitative research method that gives voice to participants’ experiences and perspectives while simultaneously facilitating critical consciousness-raising for social action and social change. This study employed a Photovoice process to explore experiences and perspectives of residents and people working in organizations that serve West Louisville, and to facilitate dialogue and action leading to social change. Forty-three individuals across eight groups completed the Photovoice project, representing youth, older adults, LGBTQ people, faith leaders, educators, activists, and two groups of Black men. Analysis of photos and group dialogue within and across the eight groups identified several common themes that pointed at the historical and present structural racism in the community, the city’s lack of concern for the Black community, the importance of Black history, and the need for collective community action. The public Photovoice exhibit helped inform the subsequent agenda for the city’s Center for Health Equity.

The Community Faces Model: Community, University and Health Department Partners Thriving Together for Effective Health Education. 社区面孔模式:社区、大学和卫生部门合作伙伴共同促进有效的健康教育。

We use a community based participatory research approach to examine the processes of collaboration and communication, as well as the relational interactions of one community focused health promotion coalition, the Community Faces of Utah (CFU). We assess the evolution, structure, successes, and challenges of the coalition, comprised of five distinct cultural communities, a state health department, and a university. Researchers from the university collaborated with the coalition to find that CFU is an equitable, collaborative partnership of diverse leaders that functions successfully. Shared values and trusting relationships emerged over time, forming the basis for group interaction. A community liaison to facilitate interaction and collaboration was an essential element of the success of this partnership. The experience of CFU can guide other multi-sectoral partnerships in developing functionality consistent with achieving community driven objectives.

Development of a culturally relevant physical activity intervention for Navajo cancer survivors. 纳瓦霍族癌症幸存者文化相关体育活动干预的发展。

Despite well-documented benefits of physical activity for cancer survivors, few interventions have been developed for Native American cancer survivors, the population with the poorest survival rates of any group. This paper describes the development and cultural adaptation of a physical activity intervention for Navajo cancer survivors using Intervention Mapping (IM). IM procedures were guided by the PEN-3 (Perceptions-Enablers-Nurturers) and Health Belief Models and informed by a qualitative study with 40 Navajo cancer survivors and family members. For each theoretical construct (perceived benefits, barriers, enablers of healthy behaviors, etc.), a measurable objective was identified. These objectives were then matched with intervention strategies. The IM process indicated the need for a highly culturally sensitive environment (site and providers), culturally acceptable measurements and materials, and integrating cultural and environmental activity preferences. Program objectives aligned directly with these areas. Intervention strategies included: (a) collaboration with providers sensitive to historical/cultural context and environmental barriers; (b) cultural adaptation of surveys, non-invasive physical measurements, no biospecimen storage; (c) materials, terminology and symbols embracing cultural values of return to harmony; (d) physical activities that are flexible and aligned with cultural preferences and environment/travel issues (e.g., outdoor walking; community and home-based options; portable, inexpensive resistance equipment; local resources; family/friends participation and more community cancer education); (e) clinical adaptations by site and symptoms. This study is the first to document the process of adaptation of a physical activity program for Navajo cancer survivors. Objectives and strategies incorporated via IM are expected to foster sustainability and enhance uptake, satisfaction, and adherence.

Applying a Community-based Participatory Research Approach to the Development of a Structured Assessment Tool: A Case Study in a Multiservice Youth Initiative 应用基于社区的参与式研究方法开发结构化评估工具:一项多服务青年倡议的案例研究

Adolescence is a critical time to intervene with youth at risk of serious harmful behaviors, such as violence, and to ensure that key developmental needs are met. There are a number of research-based tools and programs that address these goals, but real-world implementation presents challenges that limit the feasibility of these strategies in many settings. Cost, lack of implementation infrastructure, and concern about local fit and buy-in all contribute to the limited use of research-based tools in community settings. These challenges are particularly prominent in community-wide initiatives which coordinate efforts across multiple systems. Successful examples of efforts and strategies to overcome these challenges are needed. This paper presents a case study of a community-based participatory research (CBPR) orientation employed in the development of an assessment and referral system within the comprehensive service network of a youth violence prevention initiative in Seattle, WA. Findings from qualitative interviews and tool validation analyses illustrate the feasibility and utility of applying CBPR principles to tool adaptation efforts. Our experience demonstrates the value of a CBPR approach in balancing provider needs with research-based assessment practices to ensure youth receive well-targeted services across multiple service settings.

California Gold Country’s Digital Heritage: Innovations in Community Engaged Research and Training 加州黄金之乡的数字遗产:社区参与研究和培训的创新

This article presents the results of the Historic Coulterville Digital Preservation Project, an important digital humanities research collaboration which started in the Fall 2015 between the University of California Merced Resource Center for Community Engaged Scholarship, the John Muir Geotourism Center, the Northern Mariposa County History Center, and faculty and graduate students of the Interdisciplinary Humanities Graduate Program at UC Merced. Dictated by the needs and goals of the community members of the gold rush town of Coulterville, in the Sierra Foothills of California, who are invested in the preservation of their cultural heritage, the project focused on digital historic preservation in four areas of focus: i) the archives and photographs at the Northern Mariposa County History Center, ii) the Coulterville cemeteries, iii) oral histories of Coulterville, and iv) the digital documentation of Coulterville Main Street Historic District. Combined, these four areas of focus presented a breadth of subject matter through which to test various digital preservation methods in a real-world scenario as well as provided both the students and the community members the opportunity to study subjects in greater depth that were of mutual interest. The project provides an example of the potential for community-university research collaborations to benefit local communities while also providing training and networking opportunities for students, and new scholarship case studies for the scholars.

The Michigan State University Adolescent Project (MSUAP) is an experiential learning opportunity, which teaches students to work with adolescent youth and their families through referrals from the juvenile justice system. Through its engaged learning approach, students are taught to emphasize assets, build relationships, and recognize the context which influence social problems. The MSUAP is a two semester course where undergraduates receive 10 weeks of manual based training followed by assignment to work with a youth one on one. The student works with the youth for eight hours per week in the community setting. This article will describe the evolution of MSUAP as a model of pedagogy congruent with the outreach and engagement mission of today’s higher education, summarize past research on the multiple impacts of the MSUAP model, and provide an in depth case study of the educational experience from the perspective of a participating student.
