Food Supply and Urban Gardening in the Time of Covid-19 新冠肺炎时期的粮食供应与城市园艺

The pandemic caused by Covid-19 has highlighted the vulnerability of the agrifood system The urgent need to supply fresh food has arisen everywhere Lockdown slowed down the fresh vegetables supply in the long distance distribution chains In addition, the total confinement occurred in many countries left the people not only distressed, but also in the need to divert daily spare time to a new home gardening vitalization During the pandemic, sales in local and street markets declined dramatically, while most purchases became concentrated in supermarkets This fact has increased the risk of crowdedness and thus contamination or regulated entrances in the supermarkets, or left communities in small towns with limited access to food supply due to the lack of big grocery stores Gardening can increase opportunities for local and fresh food availability Scaling-up local food production becomes important to increase resilience of communities The pandemic may represent an important opportunity to enhance a new era of gardening with modern technology along with traditional systems

The Improved Chemical, Mechanical, Rheological, and Pasting Characteristics of Protein-Rich Brown Rice by Parboiling Process Integrated with Nitrogen Fertilization Parbowling工艺结合氮肥改良富蛋白糙米的化学、力学、流变和糊化特性

The effects of nitrogen fertilization (NF, 60-100 kg ha-1) and parboiling operation (soaking temperature (SoT, 50-80°C) and steaming time (StT, 10-15 min)) on the protein content (PC), amylose content (AC), gelatinization temperature (GT), hardness value (HV), peak viscosity (PV), trough viscosity (TV), final viscosity (FV), breakdown (BD), setback (SB) point, peak time (PTi), and pasting temperature (PTe) of brown rice were evaluated. Results showed that the GT, HV, FV, and TV were significantly increased by increasing the NF, SoT, and StT levels. An increase in the SoT and StT levels led to a significant reduction in PC, AC, BD, and TV values. The AC (17.13-16.83%) and PV (1605-1588 cP) values were decreased by increasing the NF level, while the PC (8.78-9.46%) and BD (226.9-247.7 cP) values were increased. Rheological parameters of BD (336.4 cP), FV (3608.5 cP), and SB (1843.5 cP) were notably increased using the combined treatment of 100 kg ha-1 NF and of 80°C SoT. The best triple treatments for the improved GT (5.0 °C), HV (19.37 N), as well as FV (3923 cP), and SB (1949 cP) were 60 kg ha-1 NF+80°C SoT+15 min StT, 100 kg ha-1 NF+80°C SoT+15 min StT, and 100 kg ha-1 NF+80°C SoT+10 min StT, respectively.

Fungal Diversity and Over-Represented Non-Nectariferous Plants Pollen in Honey. Case Study on Acacia Honey Authenticity, Analyzed in APHIS Laboratory 蜂蜜中真菌多样性和非花蜜植物花粉。金合欢蜂蜜真实性案例研究,在APHIS实验室分析

Pollen analysis is the basic method for the determination of the botanical and geographical origin of honey. However, the presence of over-represented pollen in honeys may lead to false results of the analysis. This can be more severe if this pollen is present in unifloral under-represented honeys of commercial importance (e.g. thyme or acacia honey). In the present study, we investigated the abundance of nectarless pollen grains on several quality characteristics in honey samples. In particular, the physic-chemical (diastase activity, electrical conductivity, sugars and HMF content) analysis were carried out in order to confirm the declared botanical origin. Spectrophotometric method was used for diastase activity determination, electrical conductivity was determined by potentiometry and chromatographic determinations for HMF content (photodiode array detection) and sugars (HPLC refractive index detection). The present study confirms that, in the case of non-nectariferous pollen presence in honeys, a second count must be made, excluding this pollen type and pollen analysis alone cannot give reliable results for the determination of the botanical origin. Consequently, pollen analysis should be combined with other analyses, especially in honeys with under-represented pollens, to give precise results for the botanical characterization and labeling of honeys.

Yield Performance of Faba Bean Cultivars under Different Environmental Conditions in Greece 希腊不同环境条件下蚕豆品种的产量表现

Faba bean is an important grain legume, grown for human consumption and animal feed and can be used as an alternative to soybean protein. Drought and heat strongly influence faba bean growth and production, especially in flowering and pod development stages. The aim of this study was to determine the response of six cultivars to different environmental conditions during the 2018-2019 growing season. Four inbred lines and two commercial cultivars were sown in different environments in South, Central and North Greece. At each location, a randomized complete block design with four replications was used. Different characteristics such as plant height, number of pods plant-1, number of seeds pod-1, seed yield and 1000-seed weight, were recorded. The results indicated that all traits were significantly affected by different climatic conditions and cultivars. In most cases, seed yield and 1000-seed weight decreased with increasing drought conditions in the southern site. KK10 produced higher yield and pods plant-1, especially in North and Central Greece. The late maturity cultivars, ‘Polycarpe’ and KK14, showed lower values for the seed traits under all locations. Multi-location trials are useful for the evaluation of new cultivars and lead to an increase in production of feedstuff directly available to farmers.

Interdisciplinary Approach Towards Consumer Acceptability of Flavoured Honey: Case of Young Generation in Slovakia 风味蜂蜜消费者可接受性的跨学科方法:以斯洛伐克年轻一代为例

Flavoured honey is an increasingly popular product among consumers. Enriching honey with other healthy ingredients such as spices, herbs, dried fruits, pollen and propolis is a way to create new innovative products, with benefits for both, beekeepers and consumers. The purpose of the study was to test four types of flavoured honey among young consumers segment in Slovakia: honey with cacao, honey with cinnamon, honey with turmeric and honey with pollen, by using an interdisciplinary approach. The research combined sensory analysis, consumer research and laboratory tests methods aiming to find the consumer interest and acceptability of these products. Based on overall sensory analysis, honey with cacao and cinnamon obtained the best evaluations in terms of aroma, taste and colour, while honey with turmeric obtained the worst. Laboratory tests showed that all four types of flavoured honey have higher antioxidant activity than normal pure honey. Communicating these results to consumers partially influenced their preferences. The results of consumer research indicate that flavoured honey was perceived as innovative and natural product and the majority of respondents would buy it.

Expressiness of the Main Characters of a New Genotype of White Kidney Bean 一个新基因型白芸豆主要性状的表达

Currently, in Romania there are just a few autochthonous white kidney bean varieties and this is the main reason why Vegetable Research Development Station (VRDS) Buzau has chosen a breeding program for this species. The aim of this study was to assess the main quantitative characteristic of a new cultivar of kidney beans, ‘Doina’. The correlation matrix showed a strong relationship between plant height and bush diameter and also with leaf length and a negative correlation between plant height and pods mass per plant. The cultivar has a yield potential of over 3000 kg/ha and a compact maturation of the pods, being suitable for mechanized harvesting. An important feature is plant hardiness, due to local genetic resources used in the breeding program. During the research it was found that the variety has a distinct phenotypic expressiveness with a high yield and quality potential.

The aim of this study was to assess the main quantitative characteristic of a new cultivar of kidney beans, ‘Doina’. The correlation matrix showed a strong relationship between plant height and bush diameter and also with leaf length and a negative correlation between plant height and pods mass per plant. The cultivar has a yield potential of over 3000 kg/ha and a compact maturation of the pods, being suitable for mechanized harvesting. An important feature is plant hardiness, due to local genetic resources used in the breeding program. A New Species of Insect Possibly Invasive for Ornamental Plants in Romania 罗马尼亚一种可能入侵观赏植物的昆虫新种

Following the periodic evaluations carried out in the parks of Timisoara (Timis, Romania) which had as main activity the monitoring of harmful insect species, we noticed an interesting species with the ability to jump, which attracted our attention. It has been identified as Scudderia sp. This was not found so far in the western part of Romania or in other areas of the country (to our knowledge). So we started to study it in more detail, to monitor it and to see if there are injuries on ornamental plants. The observations were made during 2019 and 2020, in five representative parks in Timisoara. The insect was reported in two parks. Both immature forms (larvae and nymphs) and adult forms were present, starting with June. The last specimens were observed at the end of September. The population level found in the parks of Timisoara is quite high and the aesthetic damage caused to ornamental plants is clear. The plants that katydids were seen feeding on, were diverse. The most affected of these (about of 30-60%) were those of rain flower, African daisy flowers and roses.

Milk Cholesterol Reduction at Pilot Station Level Using Beta-Cyclodextrin 利用-环糊精降低试验站水平的牛奶胆固醇

The objective of this study was to investigate the possibility of cholesterol elimination from milk using betacyclodextrin at pilot station scale, because there is very little information considering this level of milk processing. β-cyclodextrin is a nontoxic, edible and chemically stable compound with affinity for nonpolar molecules like cholesterol, giving the opportunity for obtaining food products that can prevent the appearance of cardiovascular diseases. By applying of this procedure, the cholesterol reduction percentage was calculated as approximately 84 %, similar to the values reported by the specialty literature. Except fat and freezing point values, the other parameters values increased with an approximate percentage of 8, indicating a concentration phenomenon due to milk pasteurization. Fat concentration value decreased with 5.9 %, due to the cholesterol inclusion in the betacyclodextrin molecule and its elimination at the bottom of the centrifugal separator. However the variation of the parameters is insignificant, so this process could be considered efficient to be applied at a pilot station level.

Determination of Trace and Heavy Metals in Fruit Juices in the Romanian Market 罗马尼亚市场上果汁中微量及重金属的测定

The presence of trace, heavy metals in foodstuffs is of intense public interest. The aim of this study was to determine the metal contents in most known commercial fruit juices present on the Romanian market. The multielement analysis was made using the ICP-MS technique, after appropriate dilution, using the external standard calibration method. Multifruit, mango, and kiwi juice have recoded the highest concentration of Cu, while apple and pear juice has recoded the lowest concentration, and in the case of Zn, peach juice has recoded the highest concentration. Concerning Pb, Cd, and As concentration, apple, peach, and multifruit juices recorded the highest levels of concentration. The concentration of Zn, Cu, Co, and As generally, was higher in the juice samples packed in boxes, while Ni, Cr, Pb, and Cd recorded the highest values in the juice packed in plastic bottles.

Screening of Antimicrobial Residues among Table Eggs Using Disc Diffusion Assay at Erbil Governorate, Kurdistan Region, Iraq 用圆盘扩散法筛选伊拉克库尔德斯坦地区埃尔比勒省食用鸡蛋中抗菌药物残留

The existence of antimicrobial residues in food of animal origin is a safety concern worldwide. This study investigated the occurrence of such residues in table eggs collected from Erbil city (Iraq) markets according to shell color, location, and season. Results showed that the total proportion was 15.2%. The differences were not significant for the shell color (White color 13.7%; Brown color 16.8%), location (Urban 16.4%; Rural 13.8%), and months (July 12.1%, August 13.5%, September 18.8%, October 15.7%, December 16.9%, and November 14.1%). Such level of residue contamination requires a response from in-charge Iraqi health authorities to regulate antibiotics usage and ensure food safety.
