Jürgen Quest (Chief Aerodynamicist)
The capabilities of the European Transonic Windtunnel ETW to simulate flight conditions by testing at cryogenic temperatures are presented. The achieved flow quality and tunnel control form the basis for an excellent data repeatability and a high confidence level in the deliverables. Unique instrumentation has been developed to provide additional information about the test object and the surrounding flow field during tunnel entries. Typical samples of Reynolds number effects are shown. Productivity aspects are considered on the basis of recently performed test scenarios.

Christian Pusch
This year, a considerable part of the Aeronautics Days conference programme was devoted to air transportation, which is reflected in these Proceedings through the sections on Safety, Environmental Impact and Air Traffic Management. Cooperative work on the problems of air traffic management is a crucial component of research effort in Europe and in particular is a key element of the research strategy at the Eurocontrol Experimental Centre. The research papers in this section of the Proceedings, introduced below, give some ideas of the issues facing ATM research in Europe.

Compared with fixed wing aircraft Helicopter fatalities are at a level of 10 times higher. The objective of HeliSafe is to improve the survivability in helicopter crashes. This will be achieved by an advanced Safety System concept based on interacting safety features evaluated by simulation using a numerical tool concept. This article provides an overview of the work carried out and presents examples of the results achieved so far.
