One aim of the RESPECT project was to critically analyse current helicopter operations and propose validated guidelines for improved methods of operation. The method developed during the study and proposed as ‘Improved Methodology for take-off and landing procedures’ will be described. The code and some very specific simulator cues will be presented.

In the past 20 years a small but very specialised and internationally competitive aircraft supply industry has developed in Austria. Currently approximately 30 companies with a total turnover of 270 million and 1,800 employees are active in the aircraft supply business This article gives a concise overview of the Austrian situation.

Dramatic changes are occurring in the aeronautical electronics field. Demands for new services and capabilities are increasing, whilst progress in technology is making them affordable. In addition, the Integrated Modular Avionics (IMA) and Electronics (IME) concepts have been shown to be cost-efficient. Europe is preparing its next generation systems through a joint effort distributed across several successive projects within the EC Framework Programmes.

The paper summarises the IMT Project HICAS on ‘High Velocity Impact of Composite Aircraft Structures’ which was concerned with developing a design methodology and FE simulation tools for predicting the high velocity impact response of composite aircraft structures. Achievements include measurement of high rate mechanical properties of three aircraft composite systems, development of new failure models for composites under high rate loads, implementation of models into commercial FE codes and code validation by simulation of impact in test structures.

This article introduces the industrial deployment of multi-site extended enterprise concept within EADS AIRBUS SA for the development of the new AIRBUS. Between 1997 and 2000, EADS AURBUS SA, for the development of the A340 500 and 600 programmes co-located up to 600 persons on a common multidisciplinary platform (engineering, manufacturing, support, airlines involvement). The objectives were to reduce, in comparison with A340, the lifecycle of the development of 25%, to reduce the development costs of 30% and to reach, at the entry in service of the first aircraft, a maturity never seen (dispatch reliability of 99%). For that purpose, digital mock-ups were used and permitted to support all the actors involved all along the development and also during the assembly of the first aircraft. This approach continues actually with the involvement of all the parties of the new integrated AIRBUS company for the development of the A380 (very large aircraft) and the A400M (military transport aircraft).
