The APIAN programme (Advanced Propulsion Integration Aerodynamics and Noise) launched in 1996 under the coordination of AM Airbus follows GEMINI (1990–1993), and GEMINI II and SNAAP (1993–1996) and the huge advances achieved in 10 years show the large effort allowed by the European scientific community since the end of the 80s to understand propeller physics. This paper details the important experimental achievements of the isolated propeller test in the ONERA S1MA transonic facility; preliminary results of the installed S1MA test in ONERA S1MA are also shortly discussed.

The evolution of composite material applications for primary structure of Airbus aircraft will be continued with A380, delivering significant weight savings. Selection of composite materials and manufacturing processes for A380 targets the same cost level for primary aircraft components as for advanced metal structures. The paper outlines how the cost target can be achieved using Resin Film Infusion (RFI) and Automated Fibre Placement (AFP) for the production of panels for the unpressurised aft fuselage.

Research related to the atmospheric effects of aircraft emissions has become increasingly important during the last decade within the EC Environment research programmes and the national programmes by the Member States of the European Union. The aim is to assess the global effects on climate and the ozone layer resulting from the increasing air traffic. Currently, the EC research activities are supported by the ‘Global Change, Climate and Biodiversity’ Key Action of the Environment and Sustainable Development programme. Coordination of EC and nationally funded projects occurs through the CORSAIRE (Coordination of Research for the Study of Aircraft Impact on the Environment) cluster. The results of the projects involved in CORSAIRE contribute to aviation related atmospheric assessments and provide a solid scientific basis for any future policy or regulatory action. Finally, the perspective of the European research, which makes a major contribution to the worldwide efforts in this field, are described.

Improvements in Air Traffic Management are required and aim at reduction and avoidance of inefficiencies, delays and safety risks. A frame concept under the term A-SMGCS (Advanced Surface Movement Guidance and Control System) has been accepted world-wide in order to avoid an airport bottleneck. Three projects are described in brief: the DLR internal project TARMAC and the European Commission sponsored projects DEFAMM and BETA.

Wilfred Rouwhorst (Real project-coordinator)
The REAL project dealt with the inclusion of advance robust control techniques in the process of development of autoland systems, in order to reduce the non-recuring costs. New design approaches were set up. Although they can still be improved, e.g. automated, these processes have already demonstrated the potential to shorten the design time considerably while achieving satisfactorily robust autoland controllers. Autoland systems were developed for and flight tested on DLR's ATTAS VFW 614 aircraft in the summer 2000 period.
