Next to other projects to reduce the aircraft source noise, SOURDINE has performed on initial study into the possibilities to reduce aircraft noise by modifications to current aircraft operational approach and departure procedures. A number of potential solutions have been identified in this area and an illustration of the obtainable benefits has been made. The project has been carried out in preparation of a follow-on project, which will further develop the most promising solutions that have been identified in this project.
This presentation gives an overview of the Swedish National R&TD efforts in aeronautics. The scope is to look both a little bit backwards and see what has been achieved, and to look into the future.

The capacity of our present air transport system is approaching societies tolerance levels especially as concerns environmental challenges. The approach needed has to include an optimisation of technology in a combined top-down/bottom-up process, an efficient utilization of resources through a more function-oriented business structure integrating life-cycle perspectives and finally creating challenging, stimulating education and working conditions throughout the whole system, making it possible to attract the most talented people -- simply the best!
