Local authorities invest between 15 and 20% of their yearly budget in urban transport. The excessive increase in motorization indexes in developed countries produces irreversible damage to the environment and impairs citizens’ quality of life. Urban public transport can help to improve people's wellbeing and achieve sustainable development in cities. Operations support systems (OSS) are integral control systems that, when applied to transportation networks, can provide the required means to identify, regulate and manage the available resources in real time. The main objective of this study was to examine the current relationship between investment in OSS and improvement in the quality of service in businesses providing urban transport services in local settings in Spain.

This paper aims to analyse the tension between cooperation and conflict in collective actions, based on a model of the preferences of economically involved agents versus the self-regarding person, who usually uses the literature. The key topic discussed is cooperative behaviour within managerial organisations. We propose a utility function for a reciprocal cooperative agent in a managerial context and apply this function to a coalition model composed of two agents.

Interest in corporate social responsibility (CSR) is growing among professionals and scholars. This paper aims to study the role played by shareholders and top managers in implementing socially responsible actions by firms. The impact of ownership concentration on the development of CSR practices and the potential moderator effect of managers on this relationship were analyzed using information from 128 large-sized companies in Spain. The results suggest that the greater the percentage of shares held by the largest owner, the greater the firm's social commitment. Furthermore, this relationship seems to be affected by top managers’ perceptions of CSR.

Several studies in the environmental literature have argued that the commitment to sustainable development can benefit companies in several ways. However, this strategy does not seem to be destined to maximizing short-term profit. This paper attempts to give an insight on some of the implications that the owners with the greatest potential for influencing the company's environmental performance strategy. Different ownership structures may imply different objectives to be pursued by the firm, and this may affect the environmental performance. Moreover, we analyse whether a good environmental performance may attract certain types of investors. We test these relationships by taking a sample of 82 U.S. and U.K. firms. Finally, we discuss the results and offer the conclusions of our study.

As a result of social and political changes, institutional pressures on employers to achieve a work-life balance in the Spanish context have been intensified. This article analyzes how institutional pressures related to the work-life balance are perceived by organizations and relates these pressures to directors’ personal variables, such as position, gender, age, marital status, number of under-age children and dependants, and the sector in which the organization operates. Institutional Theory is used to identify the type of perceived pressure, and the Upper Echelons Theory is used to explain different perceptions of these institutional pressures according to directors’ personal variables. The results obtained confirm the existence of these pressures and that gender, marital status and position are important factors. The results also reflect the influence of sector on perception of institutional pressures.

This article examines the transmission of volatility and the creation of optimal risk minimizing portfolios among large-, medium- and small-capitalization companies of the Spanish stock market, which are represented by the IBEX 35, IBEX MEDIUM CAP and IBEX SMALL CAP indexes respectively. A comparison of two volatility models, a symmetric and an asymmetric multivariate GARCH model with structural changes, shows that there are differences in the transmission of volatility. We demonstrate that, in all the possible scenarios analyzed, the risk minimizing portfolio is composed of medium and small indexes with a higher weight of medium firms. The risk is even lower when asymmetric effects and structural changes are taken into account. These results therefore illustrate the importance of knowing the main characteristics of these firms with respect to those than compose the IBEX 35 index.

This paper deepens and expands the study of the factors determining resistance to change in employees. It includes new personality-related and structural contextual antecedents that, alongside variables related to the management of the change process and its consequences, allow the authors to contribute new evidence. The empirical analysis uses a sample of 143 employees from 7 organisations, and the results confirm the influence of cultural values, involvement in the change, perceived outcomes, and self-esteem on resistance behaviours. Theoretical conclusions associated with the potential of organisation-based self-esteem to moderate the effect of cultural values on employees’ resistance to change, and practical applications for organisation managers, are offered.

In the current socio-economic context, an important source of firm success relies on its continued efforts devoted in the area of technological innovation. The above mentioned efforts are the result of a shared action among all or the majority of members and organizational units of a firm, as well as of the relations that it can develop with its customers, allies, suppliers, etc. In this sense, and based on the Open Innovation perspective, we could analyse social and relational capital as key factors to achieve technological innovation and, then, firm success. Taking into account these arguments, and using the Intellectual Capital-based View, this research — for a sample of 251 firms — tries to give empirical evidence about the role of social and relational capital on product and process innovation. The obtained results show the key role of both capitals on technological innovation for the case of Spanish technology-based industries, emphasizing the inter-organizational relationships among the firm with its customers and suppliers.

This work addresses a wide debate about Environmental Dirección de empresas in recent years: the connection of Environmental Protection and Performance. More specifically, it aims to contribute to this question from the stakeholders’ focus. Adopting an moderating effects approach, we have found significant evidence about the positive moderated effect of stakeholders’ integration on environmenta protection-performance connection. The paper concludes with an analysis managers’ perception about this relation and suggests that it is necessary to disseminate these results in order to influence on managers’ perception and therefore on their willingness to develop environmental protection practices.
