Effects of different graded levels of tannia (Xanthosoma sagittifolium) on growth performance of broiler chicken 不同等级单宁酸对肉鸡生长性能的影响

Abstract An investigation was undertaken to study the effect of replacing maize grain with tannia corm meal (TCM) on growth performance parameters and economic feasibility of Ross 308 broiler chickens. A total of 180 unsexed day-old chicks were randomly divided into 15 pens, each with 12 chicks, and assigned to five dietary treatments in a completely randomized design with 3 replications. The treatments were replacement of maize grain with TCM at 0 (T 1), 15 (T 2), 30 (T 3), 45 (T 4) and 60% (T 5) levels. Feed intake, growth performance and mortality when it occurred were recorded, while weight gain and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were calculated. DM, CP, CF, EE and ash composition of TCM were 90.6, 3.7, 2.2, 1.2 and 2.2%, respectively, while its ME was 3121.21 kcal/kg DM. Daily feed intake of birds during starter phase was significantly different (P < 0.05) and increased as TCM inclusion level increased. However, during the finisher and entire production period, this value was comparable. Average daily gain (ADG) and FCR during starter and entire production period and final body weight of chickens were significantly (P < 0.05) different among treatment diets, while ADG and FCR during finisher phase and mortality rate were comparable across dietary treatments. Based on feed intake and rate of mortality recorded in this study, TCM in broilers diet could substitute maize grain up to 60%. However, taking the growth performance and economic benefits into consideration, its substitution should not be more than 45%.

Determinants of the acceptability of university agricultural extension in the Gauteng province of South Africa 南非豪登省大学农业推广可接受性的决定因素

Abstract Universities offering agricultural programmes have the potential to complement public agricultural extension and advisory services because they are at the centre of knowledge generation—through research, teaching and community outreach programmes. The purpose of this study was to determine farmers’ acceptability of university agricultural extension and the factors influencing their decision. Using probability sampling, a sample of 442 participants from Gauteng Province were selected for inclusion in the survey to collect data through face-to-face interviews. Primary data were subjected to descriptive statistical analysis and Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) found in IBM SPSS version 27. The results showed that a significant proportion of the respondents favoured the introduction of university agricultural extension to complement public extension services as part of a pluralistic extension system. Furthermore, most of the farmers were willing to pay for extension services and were optimistic about the perceived benefits of associating with universities. The exploratory factor analysis revealed that access to research resources, improved extension services and training, and diffusion of university research were the three factors underlying the acceptability of university agricultural extension. It is suggested that a formal framework for pluralistic extension system should be developed through a participatory process that involves all stakeholders.

Strategy mapping for reopening school canteen in new normal era by safety and halal standard 新常态下学校食堂安全与清真标准重开策略映射

Abstract The school canteen must provide nutritious, safe, and halal food. During the COVID-19 pandemic, it was not easy to manage the canteen operations. This study aims to map the barrier, driving factors, and priorities strategy to prepare for reopening the senior high school’s canteen with safe and halal standards in the new normal era. This study was analytically observational with a cross-sectional approach in nature. SWOT and Fuzzy-ANP (F-ANP) methods identified and determined the priority strategies. The SWOT analysis results show that internal factors are moderate, but external factors strongly influence the school canteen’s position, hence growth and development strategies are required. Based on weighted priority by F-ANP six strategies are recommended. The six strategies to reopen safe and halal of Senior High School canteen are as follows: establish school canteen management commitment with food handlers and other stakeholders with distinct communication; develop safe and halal school canteens, the authority should consider affordable menu prices; serving a variety of safe and halal menus according to the purchasing power, mainly students; conduct education or training according to the needs of school academia and canteen management for food safety and halal; develop new menus or re-formulate existing menus considering school academia and supporting food safety, halal, and nutrition; and finally, conduct training on processing and serving safe and halal menus for school canteen managers and food handlers. These alternative strategies are expected to better prepare for reopening the school canteen with safe and halal standards in the new normal era.

Selected aspects of dietary habits and physical activity of students at the Biotechnical faculty, Slovenia 斯洛文尼亚生物技术学院学生饮食习惯和体育活动的选定方面

Abstract The aim of this study was to determine the influence of joining university on dietary habits, intake of food, and physical activity of students at the Biotechnical Faculty of the University of Ljubljana. Overall, 226 students (82.3% female) self-evaluated their dietary habits and their physical activity before and after starting university. A change in dietary habits was evident for the majority of the students (female: 74.7%; male: 67.5%). After starting their studies, ~20% of students consumed less fruits and vegetables, and only 28.8% and 15.5% of the students consumed fresh fruit and fresh vegetables, respectively, more than once a day. Female students were more likely to prepare home-cooked meals (almost 50%; at least 4 times a week), while male students were more likely to eat in restaurants with subsidised meals. Approximately 70% of the students reported negative changes in their motor skills after starting university and of these, 90% also reported negative change in their dietary habits, as evidenced by higher consumption of savoury snacks and lower consumption of fresh vegetables. Since our results show a negative influence of joining university on dietary habits and physical activity, more attention needs to be paid to the critical factors involved.

Consumption frequency for precooked bean products among households in Machakos County, Kenya 肯尼亚马查科斯县家庭中预煮豆制品的消费频率

Abstract Processed beans are rich in nutrients and aid in improving household diets as they contain nutritional elements like protein, dietary fibre, and minerals while saving time and money. However, the consumption frequency for processed beans is still low among households in Machakos County. This study aims to determine the factors influencing consumption frequency for precooked bean products in Machakos County, Kenya. A sample of 385 respondents was obtained using a multistage sampling procedure. Results from the zero-inflated negative binomial regression model revealed that age, presence of children under 5 years in the household, household health, and nutrition knowledge significantly and positively influenced the frequency of consumption of precooked bean products. Further, the results revealed that the frequency of consumption of precooked bean products was significantly and negatively influenced by household size and employment status as well as the colour of these bean products. Given the positive and significant influences of nutrition knowledge on consumption frequency, an emphasis on the economic and health benefits of precooked bean products is needed to increase the consumption frequency for these products. Additionally, investing in formal education could increase the consumption frequency for precooked bean products over time.

Abstract This study examined the impact of the adoption of Korra tef (Eragrostis tef) on farm households’ welfare in Ethiopia. It was conducted with 479 farmers during the 2020 cropping season. 221 of them were Korra adopters and the remaining were non-adopters who adopted other alternative tef varieties like Boset, Dagim, Dursi, Flagot, Warekiyu, Hiber and Tesfa. Qualitative data were also collected from the pertinent key informants. The amount of tef production per hectare was used to measure household productivity, and a Household Commercialization Index (HCI) was used to determine the level of their commercialization. Welfare was proxied by measuring consumption per adult equivalent. One-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was employed to investigate farmers’ spending at various levels of commercialization. The Propensity Score Matching (PSM) method was used to investigate how the Korra tef impacted adopters’ welfare in comparison to non-adopters. A strong correlation was found between the adopters’ spending and commercialization. The adoption of the Korra tef showed a positive and significant impact on the expenditures of the adopters. Therefore, it is important to strengthen the value chain of tef in addition to promoting access to Korra tef. Governmental and non-governmental organizations should provide farmers with market-focused extension services, to enable them to increase crop productivity and engage in the market, thereby enhancing their welfare.

Abstract This paper proposes a modelling approach to bridge policy gaps and provide decision-makers with a useful tool for more focused decisions in livestock supply chains. This approach, which is put into practice through institutional arrangements, has the potential to empower the role of coordination and cooperation in the livestock supply chain, link stakeholders/entrepreneurs to vertical upstream and downstream direct and indirect actors. While there are substantial contributions to the detail of this paper, one of its most important contributions lies in introducing public-private partnerships as a driver of livestock economic development. This study evaluated the impact of integrated knowledge on production, rural households’ income, and rural households’ food security using Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) models. The database used in social accounting matrix (SAM) is also used as the base year data for policy simulations in the CGE models. The result indicates that adoption of scientific-technical breed selection and veterinarian knowledge could enable the region to obtain higher livestock production and income, thus leading to higher food security than region with indigenous and integrated knowledge adoption. The results indicate that integrated knowledge policies have more impact on livestock production, rural household income, and food security than indigenous knowledge policy implementation alone. The policies have a greater impact on the rural households’ income and food security in the merger case than in the indigenous technical simulation case. The findings imply that livestock production policies’ implementation and knowledge integration are still necessary for achieving food security, and eradicating poverty.

Antioxidant potential of Moringa Stenopetala leaf extract on lager beer stored at room temperature 辣木叶提取物对窖藏啤酒的抗氧化作用

Abstract Modern breweries are focused on controlling oxidation in beer using natural antioxidants to improve shelf-life stability. The most significant quality issues in the brewing industry are flavor instability and oxidation. In this research, the effects of adding Moringa stenopetala leaf extract to lager beer at 400, 600, and 800 ppm concentrations for 30, 60, and 90 days storage at 25ºC were investigated. The total phenolic and total flavonoid content were measured by Folin-Ciocalteu and aluminum chloride method, respectively. Using the 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity and the phosphomolybdate assay, the antioxidant activity of each treatment was assessed and compared. Addition of the extract in beer showed a linear increment in the total phenolic content from 46.79 up to 88.30 milligram of gallic acid equivalent per liter of beer (mg GAE/L) and total flavonoid content from 123.36 up to 167.09 milligram of catechin equivalent per liter of beer (mg CE/L). Similar increment was observed within the DPPH scavenging potential, from 46.55 up to 67.16% and total antioxidant power from 139.12 up to 216.67 milligram of butylated hydroxytoluene equivalent per liter of beer (mg BHTE/L). The total phenolic and flavonoid contents and antioxidant activities of extract treated beer showed slight reduction as compared to untreated beer with increasing storage time. According to the findings, M. stenopetala leaf extract could be utilized as a component in beer to reduce oxidation and keep it fresh for extended periods of time.

Abstract Traditional medical practices have been employed for millennia to keep animal health and the knowledge is passed down orally from generation to generation. It is an integral part of the culture of rural tribal peoples living in Ethiopia. Therefore, to document this indigenous ethnoveterinary practice in the Wolaita Zone of south Ethiopia, a field survey was carried out. Ninety different healers were specifically chosen and questioned based on their proficiency in treating animals with conventional medicine. The ethnobotanical data were examined and compiled using descriptive statistics. It was found that there are 28 different plant families represented by 54 plants that provide therapeutic benefits against a total of 39 livestock illnesses. The majority of plant parts used (49%) in the study sites were leaves and herbs (9). Prepared remedies were administered through nasal, oral, topical/dermal, and ocular routes. Blackleg, bloat, and endoparasites had the highest ICF values, and Withania somnifera was the most potent remedy for treating blackleg. Zingiber officinale had the highest level value (FL = 94%) for treating bloat. Croton macrostachyus was reported to be a well-known plant in the sizable community and even used at the family level for different purposes in addition to their medical value. Stephania abyssinica had the highest mean cultural importance, followed by Pentas shemperina L. The main hazards to medicinal plants in the study district were expansion of agriculture, drought, and construction. Therefore, therapeutic plant conservation is a responsibility of local communities and other responsible organizations.

Abstract Raw milk preservation encourages for dairy producers and milk processing plants. This study aimed to investigate the preservative and microbial inhibitory potentials of lactoperoxidase systems (LPs), at natural storage temperature. The milk was collected from a Friesian dairy cows farm right after hand milking from individual cows, bulked to a 50-l milk can and sampled 6 l of milk. Raw milk was divided as activated and un-activated (control). LP enzyme was activated within 2 hours after milking by adding sodium thiocyanate 14 ml (1 mg/ml) and 10 ml hydrogen peroxide (1 mg/ml) per liter. Acidity development and microbial counts were assessed. Results revealed that LPs activation had significantly (P < 0.05) extended the shelf life 8 hours. Activated milk had titratable acidity (0.19) and pH (6.52) value within the acceptable level of Ethiopian Standard up to 12 hours, while lower pH (6.24) and higher titratable acidity (0.21) were recorded in control milk. Activated milk was significantly (p < 0.05) lower in the total bacteria, yeast and mould, coliform and Staphylococcus counts. After 6 hours, total bacterial count in the control group increased to 7.36 log cfu/ml, while in activated milk it was 6.24 log cfu/ml and significantly lower (p < 0.05) from the initial count. LPs decreased the coliform count by 0.45 log cfu/ml as compared to 0.49 log cfu/ml increased in control group. LPs reduced in the Staphylococcus count by 23.13% after 12 hours of storage. LPs can be used to prolong the shelf life and safeguard the microbiological quality of raw cow’s milk where cooling facilitates are unavailable.
