There are approximately 1.1 million pet rabbits in the UK. Rabbit teeth continue to grow throughout their lifetime, and dental problems are not uncommon. New research from the Royal Veterinary College has identified that one in seven companion rabbits are experiencing dental disease. There are various risk factors which can contribute to dental disease, but all companion rabbits should have regular dental check-ups to maintain good dental health.

The Gambia Horse and Donkey Trust now offer their services to small animals as well as working equines. Over the past year, the charity has experienced an influx of cases with severely maggotinfested wounds, something that has never previously been seen in more than 20 years of operations. This brings new challenges to the charity and creates an opportunity for future research with the likelihood of this being an emerging animal and public health concern.

Pet travellers' unwanted companions: a parasitic voyage across Europe
Pub Date : 2024-06-02 DOI: 10.12968/coan.2023.0060
A. Diakou
In the modern world, country borders do not represent boundaries for the transmission of pathogens. This is also true for parasites that may travel with animals, particularly pets. Dogs and cats are moving across countries more than ever before as a result of adoption, commerce and travels with owners. In addition, climate change supports the establishment of parasites, particularly those transmitted by invertebrate intermediate hosts and vectors, into areas which were previously considered non-enzootic. Therefore, it is important for veterinarians to keep a vigilant eye on such parasitic infections in dogs and cats, be able to recognise compatible signs and feel confident in ordering specific diagnostic tests. This article presents parasites prevalently reported as imported from one European country to another. Furthermore, common clinical manifestations and diagnostic tests are summarised and the preventive measures that should be advised to pet owners are discussed. Raising awareness among veterinary practitioners and pet owners about the risk of parasites spreading in new areas is imperative for controlling and delaying globalisation of important, and potentially lethal, parasitic diseases.

Brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome: a respiratory review
Pub Date : 2024-06-02 DOI: 10.12968/coan.2024.0008
Matthew Erskine
This article reviews the pathogenesis, diagnosis and therapeutic options for the respiratory aspects of brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome. Brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome is a condition estimated to affect around 50% of the brachycephalic dog population, which, over recent decades, has seen a meteoric rise in popularity and ownership. Several primary and secondary respiratory abnormalities that can compromise the respiratory capacity of these patients should be considered. Diagnosis primarily takes the form of clinical examination and the use of an exercise tolerance test, with other diagnostics acting as a useful adjunct in fully detailing the abnormalities present. Treatments are mainly focussed on increasing the amount of space within the upper respiratory tract through removal of various primary and secondary anatomical abnormalities; however, the optimal methods are yet to be identified. While understanding of these breeds' respiratory issues has increased among owners and the veterinary profession, there are still many challenges and unknowns in the management of these patients. It is important veterinary professionals take an active approach to these patients and are able to effectively communicate which are affected in order to maximise the welfare of this cohort and uphold their ethical responsibilities to them.

Artificial intelligence in veterinary diagnostics
Pub Date : 2024-06-01 DOI: 10.12968/coan.2024.29.sup6.15
Harriet Ash Oliver Broome
Artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly important in veterinary medicine and is likely to play a significant role in how the profession develops in the future. It is already impacting the way veterinarians practice, with several technologies readily available. Its application to the interpretation of diagnostic images, clinicopathological data and histopathology has been demonstrated. It is hoped that these technologies will increase the speed and accuracy of a diagnosis. This article reviews some studies investigating the application of artificial intelligence to the diagnosis of disease in animals and considers future uses and limitations of the technology.

Treatment options for canine hip dysplasia
Pub Date : 2024-05-02 DOI: 10.12968/coan.2023.0062
Rebecca Hood, Rob Pettit
Hip dysplasia is a common orthopaedic condition in dogs which is frequently encountered by general practitioners. Multiple management options exist and an understanding of the indications for each is required when advising owners on the treatment of such cases. The majority of cases of canine hip dysplasia will likely be managed conservatively; however, a proportion of cases will not respond and therefore require surgical intervention. This article provides general practitioners with further knowledge of the surgical options available and the indications for such procedures. Immature patients with mild hip dysplasia and a lack of secondary osteoarthritic changes may be candidates for prophylactic surgical procedures, such as juvenile pubic symphysiodesis or pelvic osteotomies. In older patients or those with more severe hip dysplasia, total hip replacement results in the best outcome, with full return to function reported in over 90% of patients when performed by an experienced surgeon.

Pub Date : 2024-05-02 DOI: 10.12968/coan.2023.0064
Annika Bremhorst, Loni Loftus, Kevin McPeake
This comprehensive guide delves into the phenomenon of noise-related fear in dogs, a prevalent issue with a significant impact on canine wellbeing. The article explores the intricate relationship between a dog's emotional response to noise and its behavioural expressions, highlighting the complexity of noise-related fear, its clinical manifestations and therapeutic approaches. It emphasises the importance of differentiating fear from anxiety and phobias, as they exhibit distinct characteristics that necessitate separate consideration in both diagnostic and therapeutic contexts. The guide explains how various factors can contribute to the development and progression of noise-related fear in dogs, including genetic predispositions, breed-specific traits and traumatic events related to noise exposure. It also addresses the critical role of veterinary professionals in managing noise-related fear, advocating for informed, proactive approaches in prevention, management and treatment. The guide stresses the importance of early detection and intervention, tailored treatment strategies, and the collaborative involvement of pet owners. Overall, it offers a holistic approach to safeguard the development of noise-related fear in dogs, aimed at improving their behavioural response and overall quality of life.
