This paper discusses the design details of a MEMS compatible low-power, low-phase noise CMOS oscillator. The VCO was designed in UMC 130 nm RFCMOS technology for a multiband system with low power dissipation of 1.17 mW and low phase noise of −117.78 dBc/Hz at 1 MHz offset from the oscillation frequency. The centre frequency of oscillation was chosen to be 2.4 GHz which is a standard for Zigbee applications.

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are deployed for a wide range of applications to sense closely and collectively the environment in which they are placed. To provide services related to sensed data from a WSN to a user through Internet as per requirements has a great technological and commercial potential. For this it is necessary that a suitable WSN is quickly discovered automatically for the user. Use of technology meant for Semantic Web enables the discovery of the desired WSN which can meet the remote users' requirements. The emerging concept of the use of WSN as Service Provider for sensing services has been explored here. The service features have to be integrated with the WSN as well as the interface connecting the WSN and the Internet. In this paper we have defined modules to extend sensor node to support sensing services. The main processes related to service discovery, delivery and new service registration have been elaborated. Related considerations and requirements have been discussed.

In this paper synthesis of symmetric linear antenna arrays is described using Genetic Algorithm (GA). Genetic Algorithm has many advantages over other conventional optimization techniques. Real coded GA (RGA) is a high performance evolutionary optimization algorithm. It is used in this paper to find optimum inter-element spacing and excitation coefficients for the symmetric linear antenna array in order to minimize the maximum relative sidelobe level (SLL) in the radiation pattern of the array for minimum possible First Null Beamwidth (BWFN) increment.

In this paper, the flat top spectral characteristic of a photonic crystal based optical filter is tailored through proper insertion of defects within the crystal structure. Such tailoring is essential for accommodating the shift in channel wavelength. Estimated defects are incorporated here through proper extension in dielectric layers of specific unit cells. The distribution of such defect regions within the filter structure is crucial in determining the flatness of the filter pass band. Performance of the flat top filter is analyzed using transfer matrix method and a condition regarding distribution of defects within the filter is derived. The flat top pass band, provided by our proposed model, can support the shifts of signal wavelength in an allotted channel within its permissible limit, which is specified as 12–14 nm by ITU-T Recommendation G.694.2 for a coarse wavelength division multiplexing (CWDM) system.

Islanding detection based on wavelet and S-transform approach is presented in this paper in distributed generation (DG) based hybrid power system. The hybrid system consisting of photovoltaic (PV), fuel cell (FC) and wind energy systems (WES) connected to utility grid are considered. Further, coherency properties between the energy resources are studied to analyze the impact of islanding on the hybrid system. Simulation results clearly reflect the advantages of S-transform in localizing and detecting the islanding of different resources over wavelet transform.

A generalized photovoltaic array simulation model in Matlab/Simulink environment is developed and presented in this paper. The model includes PV module and array for easy use on simulation platform. The proposed model is designed with a user-friendly icon and a dialog box like Simulink block libraries. Considering the effect of solar irradiance and temperature changes, the output current and voltage of PV modules are simulated and optimized using this model. A fuzzy logic based maximum power point tracker is also developed using the presented model in Matlab/Simulink. The maximum power point tracker is tested in changing environment of irradiance and/or temperature. It can successfully track the maximum power point more accurately and quicker than conventional perturb and observe based controller in these situations. The overall test results validate the efficiency of the model as well as the fuzzy controller which can be used in related research works.

Relay assisted cellular system is a promising infrastructure redesign to enhance the performance of wireless systems. The use of intermediate nodes to relay information from source to destination can be efficient in eliminating black spots, extending coverage region, improving fairness in terms of capacity spread over the cell, saving power by reducing overall transmission and prolonging battery lifetime of user. This paper investigates the power saving potential of Fixed Relay Station (FRS). The basic essence of utilizing a FRS is to reduce the transmit power requirement of mobile station (MS). We assume that each wireless route includes at most one FRS. Results of theoretical analysis and computer simulation of relay assisted cellular network show more than 50% (4 to 5dB) saving in energy consumption for pathloss index of 4. Further the effects of intercell interference in a twohop cellular network is investigated in this paper. Simulation results of Long Term Evolution-Advanced (LTE-A) Urban Macro scenario with inband relays show that even after energy minimization the Signal to Interference noise ratio (SINR) of a twohop cellular network is comparable to that of a traditional cellular network.

In this paper, a theoretical model is proposed to estimate the resonant frequency of a circular split ring resonator (C-SRR) in which the outer ring is rotated. The variation in the resonant frequency with angle of rotation of the SRR is theoretically calculated. The computed values are then compared with the simulated results using an electromagnetic simulator. Also, the magnetic polarizability for different angle of rotation is extracted from the simulated data.

Several License Plate Recognition systems have been developed in the past. Our objective is to design a system implemented on a standard camera-equipped mobile phone, capable of recognising vehicle license number. As a first step towards it we propose a license plate text segmentation approach that is robust to various lighting conditions, complex background owing to dirty or rusted LP and non-convential fonts. In the Indian scenario, some vehicle owners choose to write their vehicle number plates in regional languages. Since our method does not rely on language-specific features, it is therefore capable of segmenting license number written in different languages. Using color connected component labeling, stroke width and text heuristics we perform the task of accurately segmenting the number from the license plate. Experiments carried out on Indian vehicle license plate (LP) images acquired using a camera-equipped cellphone shows that our system peforms well on different LP images some with different types of degradations. OCR evaluation on the extracted LP number text with the proposed method has an accuracy of 98.86%.
