Tracing the theoretical path of my teaching experience at a private English institute 追溯我在私立英语学院教学经历的理论路径

This paper reflects on the connections between theory and practice in a private English institute in which students follow seven different stages to complete one lesson. The objective of the researcher, an in-service English teacher, was to analyze the institute’s theoretical principles underlying each of the seven stages. These stages were studied in terms of the theories or approaches which guided the different stages in teaching and learning the English language. In order to provide an informed review of the theory and its application in practice, specialized authors, such as Richards and Rodgers (1993) or Harmer (2013), were revisited. Throughout the paper, the benefits and drawbacks students received when using the identified theories or approaches in their classes are reflected upon. Additionally, the researcher’s professional development during the steps she guided is critically analyzed.

From dealing with teacher resistance to working on teacher resilience 从应对教师的抵触情绪到研究教师的适应能力

In a time of constant change and disruption in education, it is common for teachers to feel anxious about their chosen career. Teacher ‘resistance’ is a natural response in such circumstances and one that can take a significant personal and professional toll, both on the individual and those in their community. In this article, I aim to take a more positive approach and frame teachers’ responses to change as a form of resilience, rather than resistance, and as a mindset that can be harnessed for the benefit of the individual as well as the organization. Besides, I offer some recommendations for managers on developing a positive mindset and for teachers to take on a leadership role within the institution.

El concepto de interculturalidad en la formación de futuros maestros de idiomas: hacia un estado inicial de la cuestión 跨文化主义在未来语言教师培训中的概念:迈向问题的初始阶段

En este artículo se presenta un análisis del estado inicial de la cuestión en relación con el concepto de interculturalidad —concepto clave en educación— en la formación de futuros maestros de idiomas, en cuatro países: España, México, Chile y Colombia. Primero se dan a conocer los elementos conceptuales básicos de interculturalidad, multiculturalidad, educación intercultural y formación de futuros docentes de idiomas. Luego se revisan las fuentes documentales y se dilucidan las tendencias que ven la interculturalidad como proceso pedagógico que debe responder a exigencias globales y no como construcción social y situada, como lo étnico (estado) y no como la diversidad cultural (proceso). Finalmente se presenta una reflexión sobre las futuras áreas de investigación en interculturalidad y la formación de docentes de idiomas.

This paper aims at analyzing the role that feelings and emotions play when they are utilized inside the EFL classroom with eighth grade students. They were encouraged to talk about their feelings and emotions through the development of ten workshops based on writing short stories from their own life experiences. The results showed that feelings and emotions are a part of students that cannot be ignored because they are a factor in the learning process. Self-directed learning and a positive classroom environment are also key factors that should be considered in addition to the students’ emotional side when learning English as a foreign language.

The current issue of ENLETAWA JOURNAL contains different research reports and reflections that will encourage the readers to start or continue different research studies and reflections.

An ICT Tool in a Rural School: A Drawback for Language Students at School? 农村学校的信息通信技术工具:学校语言学生的缺点?

Technology involves a vast number of advantageous usages that range from the sciences to the educational settings. Limited access to computers and the internet, among other factors, are a drawback, thus, creating a digital gap. Nonetheless, the panorama for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) and the use of internet communication technologies (ICT) in Colombia is promising given the countless number of new resources found online. However, using ICT tools requires not only the teacher’s attention, but also governmental aid before they can be implemented in the EFL class. The scope of the ICT tools in the rural setting is vast and has a great impact on students. Therefore, if factors, such as equipment in decent conditions, updated applications, and training, are not provided the real amplitude of these tools cannot be measured.

Critical thinking development by using the implicit content of songs 利用歌曲隐含的内容发展批判性思维

This study aimed to reveal the critical thinking development process of third English level students at a Languages Institute in a public University in Colombia when using the implicit content of songs through problem-based activities. A set of problem-based activities became the mechanism to achieve the prime goal of this study. The instruments from which the data was collected were video-recordings, focus group interviews and students’ artifacts. The findings revealed three main aspects according to the purpose of the research: the teacher must set up appropriate conditions to engage students in a critical thinking process, the participants’ critical thinking process can vary according to the different perspectives and activities implemented in the classroom and songs in university contexts can be used purposefully to activate thinking in the learning process.

The Bourdeur Family was a traditional family that lived in Tolouse, France in the 1870’s. Two brothers were descendants of this family. Reyner, was born in 1871, and his brother Victorine, was born in 1872. These children were raised during the boom of the industrial revolution, but each followed a different life path. Reyner was attracted to cartography, and Victorine decided to become a literature teacher.

The concept of communication in the field of education has been discussed by language teachers, scholars, and researchers among others. This article analyzes and reflects on the way in which language teachers and students communicate in the language classroom. This analysis was done based on the rules of the Cooperative Principle, proposed by Paul Grice in 1975. The inquiry consisted on studying how the teacher and students flout the maxims of communication proposed by the principle (quality, quantity, relation and manner). For the analysis, an eighth grade English class at a private school was recorded, and parts of the video were extracted. This analysis is not focused on studying how teachers and students make mistakes, but rather how communication is carried out in the language classroom.
