Being a teacher entails having to be dynamic and active when facing all of the different challenges that our field demands of us. In this case, English is not an exception to this fact. In order to teach the language, we must undergo a constant reflective process where we make use of our creativity and eclectic view of pedagogy as a means of exploring and understanding our students’ particularities. By doing so, we can get to know their backgrounds to foster their learning process.

Cultural hegemony is understood as the practice of promoting and imposing a culture. Usually the culture imposed is from a politically powerful nation over a subordinate one (Fairclough, 2003). We became interested in understanding the discourse found within EFL textbooks that could be promoting cultural hegemony. Using these textbooks could have profound implications on language learning and teaching. This is not just a matter of using American or British English in an EFL textbook; rather, it is necessary to understand the intentions of the authors of these books. It could be that the purpose is to promote one culture, possibly their own culture, as the best one or the one to follow.

Once upon a time there was a respected and powerful village ruled by King Henry and Queen Ellis. They were fair and compassionate leaders, so the villagers admired them. Although harmony reigned inside this village, there existed a deep hatred for another powerful village because of territory feuds. Due to this ancient fight between villages, all communication between its habitants was forbidden and punished. However, this would change for King Henry and Queen Ellis' daughter, who was destiny's card to join the villages.

I still have problems answering that question. One day, I read that we have many “selves” inside us. When I think about it, I notice that I have so many paths, so many different thoughts, so many ways to see life that I get kind of confused. I am not saying that I am a liar or that I have problems regarding my personality. Rather, when I reflect about myself, I realize that I have evolved so much. Yet, at the same time, I am still so connected to my inner “child” self that I do not know how to define myself. The only way I can explain it is by talking about some experiences and how my life perceptions changed according to those experiences.

The day I saw him for the first time, I was completely paralyzed because of his dazzling beauty. I thought he was the most handsome man I had ever seen. He was tall, his eyes were green, and his face was so sweet. His beautiful smile accompanied by his dimples illuminated the whole place. I could not help smiling flirtatiously because at least I expected a glance in return. Although, I assumed that someone like him would never notice me, I did not care. I kept looking at him. I looked like a complete fool; however, to my surprise, he looked back at me smiling. I felt like the happiest woman in the world. It was amazing how his gaze had enchanted me so much that I did not know what to say. My face reflected the inevitable attraction I had for that handsome man. I do not know what happened to me. I had never felt those strange butterflies in my stomach. It is something very difficult to explain, and at the moment, I just thought I wanted to see him again.
