This article analyzes the figure of the homosexual fascist, the ‘homo-fascist,’ in postwar cultural memory through the lens of Alberto Moravia's 1951 novel Il conformista ( The Conformist). Il conformista exemplifies the place of the homo-fascist narrative in crafting postwar cultural discourses around fascism, especially in the Italian case. Beginning from a close reading of the text combined with analysis of its historical context, the article deconstructs the narrative's interpretive logic to identify the many politically convenient fictions the homo-fascist offered within the growing project of postwar memory. These fictions, as embodied in the homo-fascist, facilitated the dual condemnation and excusal of fascism as the pathological weakness of the separate few, not the collective many. This analysis illuminates the often-overlooked historical role that narratives of homosexuality have played in the fluid construction of cultural, political, and social memories of fascism and its adherents. Viewing Il conformista within a specifically Italian vein of the narrative distinct from the German, moreover, critically reorients the text within Italy's individual and politically potent relationship to its Fascist past. Understanding the homo-fascist through Il conformista, therefore, enlightens not only the history of the homo-fascist figure, but also the histories of modern Italy, postwar memory culture, and sexual politics.

The goal of this article is to analyse the role of urban place names (‘urbanonyms’) with dialectal origins in the domain of Italian toponomastics. The article offers a gazetteer-based study from which a list of dialectal generic terms is extracted and compiled. From this list, a detailed geographic distributional analysis of these terms is offered, and the dialectal origins of terms are assessed. A questionnaire study is subsequently presented that analyses to what degree Italian speakers may interpret these terms as being dialectal in origin, and to an extent unique to the places they classify. The article concludes by discussing how these findings can inform our understanding of place names, their linguistic properties and their possible dialectal origins.

Lo scopo dell’articolo, attraverso un punto d’osservazione femminista, è delineare una riflessione riguardante l’istituzione del matrimonio, tesa a sottolinearne il carattere antagonistico all’interno della dicotomia uomo/donna, nel luogo circoscritto del romanzo Dalla parte di lei di Alba de Céspedes. La mia tesi è che, a partire dalla metà del XX° secolo, le opere letterarie italiane comincino ad essere attraversate dall’analisi della subalternità femminile, questione che di lì a poco esploderà con le teoriche della “seconda ondata”. Viene dunque proposta una lettura sintomatica della costruzione dei personaggi e della loro collocazione nelle coordinate storico-sociali, in quanto veicoli dei meccanismi dialettici di subordinazione ed emancipazione, constatando punti di convergenza tra il romanzo decespediano e un inquadramento del matrimonio come forma di alienazione femminile, per come contemporaneamente analizzato da Simone de Beauvoir nel Secondo sesso. This article aims to analyse, through a feminist standpoint, the marriage institution, underlining its antagonistic nature for what concerns the man/woman dichotomy, in the novel The Best of Husbands by Alba de Céspedes. My goal is showing how, since the mid-20th century, Italian literary works began to focus on the analysis of women’s subalternity, an issue that will soon break out, as it is well known, with second-wave feminism. I am therefore presenting a symptomatic reading concerning de Céspedes’ characters and their socio-historical coordinates – as they are meant to convey dialectical mechanisms of subordination and emancipation – in order to identify convergences between de Céspedes’ novel and the concept of matrimony as a form of feminine alienation elaborated in the same years by Simone de Beauvoir’s Second Sex.

Nel 1901 sulla rivista La Folla, Paolo Valera esprime una sorta di “lezione di metodo”, per cui il suo lavoro di intellettuale sarebbe finalizzato alla realizzazione di una “mappa descrittiva” della plebe milanese, dipinta con i colori più vari, sopra a cui spicca quello nero della fame. Inseguendo la metafora del mappatore, che lo stesso Valera propone, è possibile operare una riflessione sul ruolo demandato da Valera allo scrittore nella moderna società di massa e sullo spostamento di prospettiva della sua produzione dalla città alla folla. L’intero percorso dell’autore è così teso non solo a una maturazione stilistica, ma anche all’acquisizione di un ruolo nuovo, non più assimilabile a quello del palombaro, ma affine a quello dell’intellettuale-proletario. In questa evoluzione permane la tendenza catalogatrice e ordinatrice dello stile valerano, che, sfruttando l’alimentazione come impalcatura e linea strutturale, termina con il delineare una guerra classista del ventre.
