Introduction The 2020 Black Lives Matter protests sparked by George Floyd’s murder were characterized by countless marches through America’s cities and towns, as well as renewed calls for the removal of controversial memorial statues—sometimes resulting in their immediate defacement or even toppling by protesters. These acts of resistance played out differently in different parts of the USA, targeting most directly memorials to Confederate soldiers and leaders in the American South. But the summer also featured renewed calls for a reconsideration of the polarizing figure of Christopher Columbus, revered by some Italian American ethnics who see the Genoese explorer as inscribed into their own hybrid identity, and simultaneously reviled by other Americans who view him, instead, as a symbol of colonialism and genocide. In Pittsburgh, PA, where a memorial statue of Columbus has stood on prime city property since its October 1958 dedication, new but familiar graffiti soon appeared on the memorial’s granite base, and a petition calling for its removal from city property garnered over 15,000 signatures in just a few weeks’ time before the summer was out. In his formal response to the petition and to the City Art Commission hearings that ensued, then-Mayor Bill Peduto wrote that he was of two minds. The letter announcing his decision to remove the statue and “return it to the Italian American community” called out Columbus’ divisiveness in today’s America, underscoring the “reckoning” that our society has begun to make with his legacy of cruelty to and oppression of indigenous groups. On the other hand, Peduto wrote, a shared Italian American heritage had shaped his ancestors’ vision of Columbus as a navigator, a discoverer, a figure that legitimized Italian immigrants’ “right to be here”; further, the former mayor seemed to be moved by the narrative of “generations of Italian-Americans raising nickels and dimes,

The issue editors invited contributors to this section on methodologies to re fl ect critically on the bene fi ts and drawbacks of using a transnational approach to Italian cultures, and to assess whether the multiple and diverse applications of this approach have changed the fi eld of Italian Studies more broadly. In order to offer some response to these questions, and to propose ways forward for work in this fi eld during the decade to come, I want to focus here on my role as co-editor of the book series ‘ Transnational Italian Cultures. ’ ‘ Transnational Italian Cultures ’ was a joint initiative that my colleague Derek Duncan and I fi rst proposed to Liverpool University Press in the summer of 2014. Looking back at the initial proposal that we sent to the press, I am struck by two things. The fi rst is how we de fi ned the scope of our inquiry as operating within “ the burgeoning fi eld of postcolonial, global and transnational Italian studies. ” The second is our stated aim to “ bring together the outstanding work which is now being done in this area, and by bringing it together , set a new agenda for academic research on what constitutes Italian culture today ” (emphasis mine). I am interested in the fi rst statement because of how broadly we initially de fi ned our “ fi eld ” of inquiry, as spanning the intersecting spheres of postcolonial, global, and transnational studies, and I will return periodically to the still-shifting nature of how we set the boundaries of Transnational Italian Studies throughout this short piece. The second statement, however, is what I want to focus on: the importance of the act of “ bringing together ” the individual works in question in terms of providing a tailored space for their publication, but also in terms of what assembling a group of particular works means for the development of the wider fi eld itself. Inthe paragraphs to come, I will thus seek to explore and offer some answers to the following questions through an analysis of the volumes we have published in the series to date. Why is it important to carve out a speci fi c space of assemblage, such as an edited series, in

This is not an easy time for the disciplinary area of Modern Languages at least as it is understood and practised in the UK. To begin with, as is well known, there has been a decline in applications for university degrees in the subject over the last decades. There are many reasons for this decline but one of them certainly concerns the widespread (mis)perception that in a world where English functions as the lingua franca in so many sectors of international activity there is a diminishing need for graduates to attain a high level of proficiency in two or more languages and related cultural study. Perhaps even more concerning has been the closure or threatened closure of language departments or Schools of Modern Languages over the recent past. Among the list of university departments that – despite the distinguished contributions that they have made over lengthy periods of time to the study of language and culture – have been significantly downsized are those of the universities of Aston and of Hull (Astbury, 2021). A further issue that is causing concern within the subject area (Cazzoli, 2022), specifically in England, is the imminent introduction of a reform to the teaching of Modern Foreign Languages in secondary schools up to the age of sixteen in which there is no formally assessed cultural element (O’Farrell, 2021). Each of the issues mentioned above brings with it a predictable series of consequences. Though it is true that the take up of language courses is complex and includes certain areas of growth, it is nevertheless the case that if the general decline of recruitment continues, then it is likely that there will be more closures of departments. This leads to a situation in which there may be scarce provision in the subject across whole parts of the country. If the number of centres for the study of language and culture is retracting, then inevitably there are fewer opportunities for

Following the murder of George Floyd in the USA by police, on 25 May 2020, Black Lives Matter protests and demonstrations were held all over Italy. Italians and primarily Black Italians occupied streets and squares not just to condemn what happened in the USA but to say that Italy is not immune to racism. Acknowledging that diverse forms of racism operate in Italy, they aimed to assert that, starting from citizenship rights and recognition, Black people in Italy experience denials and violations on a daily basis. This was probably the most evident proof of the sense of community surfacing among Black Italians. In recent years, young Black Italian people have started using social media (especially Instagram) to open up about their stories and experiences. By doing this, they have started reflecting on their multicultural identities. These are not fixed or rooted in a specific place but are complex, multifaceted and mobile. I had the opportunity to discuss these issues with Emmanuelle Maréchal, the co-creator of Blackcoffee Podcast which was first released during the pandemic, in May 2020. Together with Ariam Tekle, an Eritrean-Italian director born and raised in Milan, they created a podcast to freely talk about Blackness in Italy. Emmanuelle and Ariam decided to interview Black Italians who would narrate their stories to counter what is generally published in the Italian press. Their main purpose is to show that Black identities have many facets. Emmanuelle is French Cameroonian. She was born in Cameroon and she grew up in France, in Bordeaux. She moved to Bologna, Italy, to study at the University of Bologna. Later she also lived in Munich and London. While growing up, both Emmanuelle and I mainly navigated white spaces. Thus, we had somehow to learn what it means to be Black

Transplanting Italo-Africa: The Monumento ai caduti d’Africa at Siracusa from colonial conception to Italian construction

Romano Romanelli designed the Monumento ai caduti d’Africa at Siracusa in 1938 to commemorate the Italian colonization of East Africa. The structure was originally intended for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, but it was never constructed within the colonial capital. After the fall of the regime and the collapse of Italy's colonial program, it was eventually installed in Siracusa, a Sicilian port city once considered a springboard for the fascist colonies, in 1968. The bronze statuary and marble relief panels combine to create an artistic program that continues to valorize colonialism and debates surrounding the monument remain unresolved. This paper considers the controversial history of the Monumento ai caduti d’Africa in relation to Italo-African colonial narratives and legacies. I propose the practice of artistic intervention as a potential solution that could neutralize or counter the fascist signification of this structure.

“The homeland is on the ship:” D’Annunzio's La nave and the construction of nationhood “家园在船上”:达南齐奥的《中殿》与国家的建设

A fervent nationalist and one of the authors most securely planted at the center of the Italian literary canon, D’Annunzio might not seem the most likely choice when seeking to trouble linguistically and culturally homogenous notions of Italian literary history. And yet, through an analysis of the 1908 play La nave—a work of nationalist propaganda—I argue that D’Annunzio's construction of italianità is the result of a complex negotiation between nationalist politics and a much more hybrid and cosmopolitan cultural ideal. Specifically, I point to the text's fascination with ‘oriental’ aesthetic practices, the general allure of the ‘other,’ its geographically decentered setting, and several structural and stylistic features that I define as ‘textual residues,’ to show that while the affirmation of Italian superiority ultimately takes precedence over representations of hybridity, multiplicity, and foreign influence, D’Annunzio's anxiety over their inclusion is nevertheless the driving force of the play.

(Dis)placing the foreign in early modern Europe: The example of Tasso's Gierusalemme (Dis)

Torquato Tasso, Italy's foremost early modern poet, engaged with issues of otherness throughout his complicated life and career—in no small part because of his own itinerant and often marginalized status. His first try at what would eventually become his monumental Gerusalemme liberata—an unfinished poem he wrote when he was 16, called simply “Il Gierusalemme”—gives us a glimpse into an early attempt to define epic as a space for welcoming in the stranger. The stranger was as much a character for Tasso as it was a parola pellegrina or foreign word, the latter a particular obsession of Tasso's. Dedicated as he was to seeing the vernacular not as “just” Tuscan, but as capacious enough to include other dialects as well as Latin and neologisms, Tasso quickly found enemies in Florence's Accademia della Crusca, which insisted on a much purer view of the Italian tongue. By connecting Tasso's theory of hospitality to the questione della lingua as it was being fought over in late 16th-century Italy, this article argues for a capacious understanding of both this early experimental work of Tasso's, as well as his later poem.

Place and transmemory in California Italian American literary narratives: Dorothy Bryant's Miss Giardino

In this article, I propose to think of spaces as sites of production and manifestation of memory, which, in turn, constitutes a transnational formation, one that can hardly be discursively fixed. In particular, my analysis of Dorothy Bryant's 1978 novel Miss Giardino uncovers how transmemory, or the intergenerational transmission of memory from diasporic to ethnic subjects, complicates ideas of Italian belonging. I turn to the study of space, with an emphasis on the multiethnic neighborhood of The Mission, in the east-central part of San Francisco, to address the mediation between Italian diasporic past and interethnic present. While acknowledging that forms of inherited memory (or postmemory), such as class memory, affect the social practice of place intergenerationally, I also aim to show that in transmemory spaces are made differently meaningful. Ultimately, reframing spaces of Italian migrations through the lens of transmemory offers a way to move us forward from impasses in Transnational Italian Studies and diaspora debates that assign to memory an overly static and national paradigm.
