This study analyzes the varieties of femininity represented in Jose Saramago's sequel, Blindness and Seeing . Femininity and its different types have been introduced by Richard Howson in his Challenging Hegemonic Masculinity . Howson believes there are three major types of femininity: emphasized femininity, ambivalent femininity and protest femininity. For Howson, emphasized femininity means a femininity that does what the hegemony of a society wants. A femininity that never says no to what is thrown its way by the masculine hegemony. Ambivalent femininity is neither with or against the power structure of the time, sometimes it does what it is told and sometimes not. However, protest femininity tries its best to stand in the face of the set hegemony, it resists, it subverts, it fights, hoping to be able to make some changes. In what follows these three models of femininity are being looked at closely to show that although Saramgo's women grow to join the protest femininity in Blindness , nonetheless they get repressed by their contemporary hegemony in Seeing . A masculine hegemony does not bear to sit aside while a woman or a group of women try to subvert it. Rather it uses whatever tool it may find – from media to violence – to hush these women and put them in their place. Keywords: hegemonic masculinity, emphasized femininity, ambivalent femininity, protest femininity, performative subversion

We have always advocated that those teaching the Use of English must seek out novel ways of teaching the grammar of English to take out the drudgery of the present approach. Here, we proposed using Linguistic deviation as a tool for teaching English grammar. This approach will produce students who are both strong in the grammar of English and literature in English. The organization of this paper is simple: 1 is the preliminary remarks, 2 is the text (the poem) for analyses, and 3 is the explication of the concept of linguistic deviation, and 4 appreciation of the poem while 5 is the application to the teaching of English grammar.

Law is a major instrument of maintaining cohesion in any given society. Its formulation, codification or unification as well as interpretation are major factors in determining the credibility of the criminal justice system and the level of legal conformity. The letter and spirit of the law are defeated when its formation, modulations, interpretation and enforcement are not products of the history and cultural values of a people. The focus in this paper therefore is an examination of the administration of justice in Nigeria through a textual analysis of selected Nigerian Video Drama. How do these characters treat or respond to law? Do judicial or legal officers (lawyers, judges, police, and prison officials) conform to rules in the discharge of their duties? Is there any consciousness of legality in the text? These and other questions are answered in this paper. Combining the historical and realist theories, this paper affirmed that if the justice system of a nation does not grow from its cultural values and history, the level of compliance would be reduced. The paper also established that judicial officers’ ethical values would be grossly influenced and affected by a legal system that is not a product of national consciousness. The paper concluded that when a particular legal system within a multi-ethnic nation ignores its historic relevance, the law of that nation dies and the resulting consequence is legal anarchy. The study sought to determine errors made by students undergoing the Professional Diploma in Education programme in the institution. This study stemmed from the fact that the current dominant medium of accessing knowledge globally is the English language. Unfortunately, the reality in Nigeria is that students’ performance in English is very poor, in spite of its being the country’s official language and the most regularly taught subject in the curriculum. Presently, the linguistic situation in Nigeria is that many graduates leave the universities without the requisite communicative skills in both the indigenous language (L 1 ) and the English Language (L 2 ). In this study, document analysis was done to detect the grammatical errors in these students’ written essays in English. The errors were further classified based on their types and sources and analysed using simple percentages. The results of the analysis showed that the dominant errors were in the areas of spelling, tense, concord, use of prepositions, punctuation, and plural and singular forms. Based on these findings, recommendations were made and they include the restructuring of the English language teacher, education curriculum to integrate contrastive analysis and error analysis as well as the use of interactive strategies in teaching to enhance practice. In recent years, African women writers, among them Ifeoma Okoye, have focused on representing the lives and experiences of women in the African society in their literary works. Okoye is an African feminist who advocates feminist consciousness as a concept through which women can be enlightened for consciousness-raising, empowerment and assertiveness in her novels, Behind the Clouds and Chimere , while emphasizing education, economic independence and sisterhood as avenues for feminist consciousness-raising and actualization. This paper will, therefore, adopt the feminist approach in analyzing these works with a view to evaluating the impact of feminist consciousness on the lives of Okoye’s female characters and how effectively they utilize education, economic independence and sisterhood to strategize, redefine themselves, challenge the status quo and attain their goals.

The paper investigated linguistic revolution with regard to the new face of register. It observed that there is a sort of metaphorical and ironical mantra in the speeches of the New Generation Christians in Rivers State, Nigeria. Data collected from the members of some Pentecostal churches were analysed using the Social Identity Theory. The Social Identity Theory defines the individual in an in-group setting and promotes the norms, culture, agreement and boundaries of the members. The norms are identity markers for the members, while the responds of the members are forms of solidarity. We observed that the New Generation Christians are dynamically very slangy. Different words, phrases and diatype sentences evolve from time to time. The speech forms, which to some extent are church-dependent, are patterns of religious identity constructs. We concluded by noting that even though these patterns of language use are matters of Faith advocacy, care must be taken in order to balance Faith with reason and reality. Key words : Identity, linguistics, Pentecostal, revolution, slangy, social and solidarity

From the classical period till the present, questions have always been asked over what values that a course of study in any human society can be to the scholar. Plato started the debate on what value or contribution which literature can make to a well-ordered republic. Later scholars defended the view by asserting that literature plays a vital role in the development of any nation by providing criticism, aesthetics, beauty of language uses, oratory and policy formulation, as well as contributing to the historical record and other societal values in any given society. It does not only satisfy the aesthetic needs of a people through arts, but redesigns, reconstructs and redirects the focus of that given society. Through the medium of criticism, literature studies, analyses and judges the ethics and mores of a given society. It therefore stands as a moral thermometer for measuring and healing the identified social maladies. This is contrary to Plato’s idea. This paper examines the role of literature in the national development. Festus Iyayi’s Violence and Buchi Emecheta’s Second Class Citizen are used as reference texts to assess the values of literature and its contributions to the sustainable development of the country Nigeria. The paper employs the use of the concept of humanism as a term applied to a variety of beliefs, methods, and philosophies that place central emphasis on the human beings. Since the main source of inspiration of humanities deeply lies in the efforts and contributions of the classical literature, the paper revisits Plato’s ideas about literature which is negative to the discipline. Analyzing Iyayi’s Violence and Emecheta’s Second Class Citizen , the paper concludes that they have not only exposed the big gap that existed between the rich and the poor, but have frowned at this social malaise that has bedeviled the Nigerian society.

Literature abounds on the causes of truancy in schools among students but hardly has there been much on its effects on core subject like English Language of which deficiency could jeopardize truants’ life careers. Being Survey study, Multi-stage and purposive sampling techniques were used to select 240 SS2 students: regular-in-class and truants from six public schools in the three geo-political zones of Imo State. Six hypotheses were drawn and a 50-item English Language objective test with four options having r=0.78 was used to gather data analyzed, using ANOVA. Findings revealed significant difference in the mean scores of regular-in- English Language lessons and truants: 23.95 and 20.54 respectively; no significant difference in the performance of truants due to parents’ income: F (2, 117) = 0.923, p = 0.400; in the performance of truants in respect of parents’ educational qualification: F (2, 117) = 1.202, p = 0.304;); and in the performance of regular and truants due to parents’ professions: F (2, 237) = 0.176, p = 0.838. There was significant difference in the performance of regular students due to parents’ income: F (2, 117) = 0.256, p < .001; and in the performance of regular students in respect of parents’ educational qualifications: F (2, 117) = 1.156, p < .000. In this paper, we examine the attitudes and behaviour of some women and gender activists to the social change that may result from gender equality when, and if it is achieved. Since it started in the 19th century, gender activism has always focused on the issue of equality between the genders, to the extent that the society eliminates all policies and practices that have, hitherto, prevented the women from operating at the same level with men. The aspiration of gender activists is that when this occurs, women will play all the roles that men play without restrictions, but, as this study reveals through quantitative inquiry, not many women, even the hardliners of gender activism think of, let alone want to bear the social changes that may result from gender equality. This promises to shift the focus of the debate of gender activism as well as feminism.

The phenomenon of gender is dualistic and bi-patterned, featuring the world of scholarship along with activism; or perhaps against it. The systematic, intellectual and analytical methods adopted by scholars, as expected of their discipline, is at par with the emotional scenario of the activists who adopt protest and agitation, expectedly too, to carry out their activism. The dichotomy thus created has a large implication on political participation and there must be a way of synergizing scholarship with activism if gender to have its way. This paper suggests a few.
