E. Onumajuru, V. C. Onumajuru

Gender Issues in Theatre Management: The Cross-River State Cultural Centre in Focus
Mfaga Modom
This study examined gender issues in the management of the Cross-River State Cultural Centre. Three research questions were formulated for the study and eighty-three respondents were used for the study. The researcher made use of questionnaires, interviews and group discussions for collecting data for the study. Descriptive tools in statistics such as tables and simple percentages were used to present the data in a clear manner for empirical analysis to answer the research questions. The study found amongst others that, although women in the Cross-River State Cultural Centre have the requisite academic qualifications and experience, appointment to the position of Director of the centre often eludes them as more men have been favoured in the appointments. It was also discovered that appointment to higher Management positions in the centre have been politicized and women in the centre lack the political power necessary for appointment to such positions. The study also found that gender perspectives and the attainment of gender equality were not central to the provisions of the edict establishing the Cross-River State Cultural Centre. The study recommended amongst others that: The Edict establishing the Cross-River State Cultural Centre should be reviewed in order to make gender perspectives and attention to the goal of gender equality central to the activities of the centre and the setting up of a Board to handle issues of recruitment, promotions and appointments in order to do away with the over politicized methods of appointing staff of the council to management positions in the council.

Translating Igbo Songs into English: An Interpretative Approach
C. Okeogu
Translation has been chosen as a means of communication. A good translation is a means of overcoming linguistic and cultural barriers thus making it possible for communication to take place. Like in other African countries, translation from and into Nigerian languages becomes necessary not only for communication purposes, but also to fulfil two important functions. The first is cultural, the second is related to socio-economic development. Our research in this regard is more related to the cultural communication of translation. Translation is no longer seen as a linguistic exercise, but is seen more as a cultural transfer where the translator mediates between two cultures. We are in this work translating Igbo sons into English: a translation that is both cultural and literary. The Igbo language is rich in culture, translating from this language into another language showcases the Igbo culture. To translate is to communicate. The translator plays with the words of two languages: the original language in which the text to be translated is written and the language into which the text is being translated into. The translator does not keep words, as soon as he understands the meaning contained in a text, he re-expresses it into another language. He mobilizes his linguistic and extra-linguistic knowledge to translate the text. Using the interpretative theory of translation, we will demonstrate that translating Igbo songs which is oral literature or orature, involves more than words.

Irony and Vision in Selected Works of Ayi Kwei Armah 《
Ibiene Evelyn Iboroma
Generally speaking, literature is used as an instrument for social change. A writer dialogues with his material world and puts in writing the outcome of this dialogue which usually serves as a mirror to the people and the society. The aim is to set standards that can engender meaningful changes in the society. The use of a medley of literary techniques such as irony unfolds the vision of life or society delineated by the writer in his work of art. Adopting the definitions of situational irony by Ephraim Chukwu, Xiang Li and Jay Braiman as the framework, this paper investigates Armah’s manipulation of the ironic mode to convey his vision of African womanhood. This will be done through the study of the attitude of the female characters in their engagement with some patriarchal mores such as marriage in Two Thousand Seasons, Fragments and The Healers. The paper argues that Armah wears a mask in his delineation of African womanhood. He seems to delineate the phenomenon of social change from the standpoint of compromise. His inability to completely alienate himself from the patriarchal social order which accounts for the subordination of the African woman informs his vision. The paper therefore concludes that Armah’s vision of African womanhood is ambivalent. Key Words : irony, situational irony, vision, patriarchy, African womanhood and ambivalence

L’Esthetique Romanesque De Calixthe Beyala Dans Le Petit Prince De Belleville Et Maman a Un Amant
Ajoke Mimiko Bestman

The Worm Squirming in the Root: An Image of Democracy in Okediran’s Tenants of the House
T. Dick
Democracy in Nigeria may be said to have made some headway since independence. Even though this democracy seems to have overcome the truncation of its first and second republics by military dictatorships, and has transited over the decades into what may appear from an uncritical observation to be an emergent stable democratic culture, the same worm squirming in its root that had sent it into a coma is burgeoning rather than whittling down. Nigerian fiction, acting as the weather-vane for this development has spotted these political shenanigans. The literary artists have lived up to their calling as defined by Howe: to be “seized by the passion to represent and to give order to experience.” This article identifies unrelenting compulsive and pervasive corruption as the image of democracy in contemporary Nigerian literature. The paper undertakes a study of Okediran’s Tenants of the House to explore political insensitivity that is propelled by avarice in leadership in Nigeria. The study attempts to examine the angst of the author’s creativity in his attempt to capture a moment of Nigeria’s leadership vacuum in the historical consciousness of the people, and concludes that contemporary Nigerian literature remains a committed art, decrying social ills that negate the well-being of the people.

Sacrificial Women – The Unlikely Heroes of Uwem Akpan’s Stories
Marybeth Bauer
This paper examines whether the female characters in Fr. Uwem Akpan’s short story collection Say You’re One of Them accurately portray the challenges that African women face in the post-colonial era, particularly when faced with challenges of poverty and violence that threaten the lives of their loved ones. It investigates how these women use the limited devices available to them -- including transactional sex, voluntary starvation, and giving their own lives to protect others – to carry out the traditional role of African women in caring for dependents, including younger siblings. It highlights the impact of societal norms, such as preferential treatment of male children and limited access to education for girls. The study finds that Akpan’s characters are accurate representations of their culture and reveals the silent, unsung heroism that African women practice as they sacrifice their own wellbeing to protect and provide for those they love.

Decoding the Metaphor of Internet Meme: A Study of Satirical Tweets on Black Friday Sales in Nigeria
S. Anurudu, Isioma Maureen Obi
This study examined an emerging trend in Internet discourse as metaphorical constructs used by individuals for communication online. The Internet meme is an evolving trend used for satirical illustrations and expression of intents in multimodal ways. While previous studies have focused on verbal metaphors signaled by Internet discourse, none of these studies have examined the relevance of memes in communicative contexts. This study drew from conceptual metaphor theory of cognitive linguistics to investigate the use of visual metaphors across Twitter which reflected consumer’s feelings on Jumia and Konga’s Black Friday sales. Five tweets were selected at random from ynaija.com, an online news blog for youths. Our study revealed that Internet memes serve as a strong rhetoric for ideological manipulations. This study will spur further research along the shores of Internet discourse. Key Words: multimodal, metaphor, Internet Memes, Konga, Jumia

Le Journal en Français Facile de Radio France Internationale: Facile Pour Les Apprenants Anglophones du FLE de Quel Niveau?
Jenny Benjamin Inyang

E. Onumajuru, Vc Onumajuru
Key Words : Groupement Tripartite, Conjugaison, Regulier, Irregulier, Paradigme.
Grace .
