Lesbianism in Nigerian literature: An appraisal of Ozioma Nduka’s “caught in the act”
Mbanefo S. Ogene
Lesbianism was until recently identified as a taboo in Nigeria and also an ignominious act which no one ever dared to mention or extol in a literary work. The public identified it as queer or obscene behaviour in writing but with the advent of post colonialism, with such movements as feminism and psychoanalysis, the reasoning pattern among Nigerian female writers changed culminating in writings discussing lesbian life and problems. This study explores lesbianism in the short story as a subgenre that delved into the lesbian life, prospects and problems. It observes that lesbianism has started manifesting in Nigerian literature even though there are still major challenges facing this subgenre of literature. Key Words: Lesbianism, lesbian literature, Nigerian literature, post colonialism

C. J. Okolo

This paper is a preliminary report on an ongoing research being carried out in the Faculty of Languages and Communication Studies of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, Niger State, Nigeria. The research is on ‘Language education and translation in Niger State’. The languages involved in the research are: Arabic, English, French, Gbagyi, Hausa and Nupe. The aim of this research which is funded by the Nigerian Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) is ‘to help improve the outcome of language education and translation in Niger State in both quality and quantity’ As a preliminary inquiry, the research team visited 78 institutions of learning at all levels (primary, secondary and tertiary) in all the three geopolitical zones of Niger State, as well as media houses located in the capital, Minna, and obtained responses to the questionnaires they took to the institutions. While pursuing the aim and objectives of their main research, the team deemed it necessary to consider the position (and the plight) of the multiplicity of other languages of Niger State (than the three major ones – Gbagyi, Hausa and Nupe) in relation to Nigeria’s language policy in education. The team found that there are conflicting reports on these languages with regard to their exact number, their location, their status, and even their spelling. The team learned that there are at least 38 languages in Niger State, some of which have several dialects as well. This side-line research concluded, therefore, that it would be a tall order to insist on implementing certain aspects of the national language policy in education in respect of the users of these languages, some of whom do not even speak Hausa, the most widely spread of the three major indigenous languages in the State. This research recommended, therefore, that the Niger State Government should consider establishing a language policy, and drawing up a specific plan, that will enable it to implement relevant aspects of the national language policy in education. Key Words : Languages, Niger State, Language policy, Education

Readability of HIV/AIDS information manuals in Ghana
W. K. Gyasi
This paper examined the readability of some medical information documents for HIV/AIDS patients in Ghana. The SMOG readability formula was used to determine the reading levels of the documents which were obtained through convenience sampling technique. One sample Ttest was used to determine whether there were statistically significant differences in the readability of the sampled HIV/AIDS literature compared to a standard 8th grade recommended for public documents. The bootstrapping technique was employed in this evaluation to ensure robust estimates of significant or p-value, standard errors and the confident intervals. The study revealed that the leaflets were generally difficult to comprehend when compared to the standard readability score of public reading materials. The study concluded that it is prudent such documents are written in plane language in order that the target readers would benefit from the information carried by these documents.Key Words: readability, healthcare, HIV/AIDS, SMOG, patients, leaflets

Satire as a Parable of an Ailing Nation: Lessons from Niyi Osundare’s The State Visit
E. Imo
The paper examines the satirical treatment of dictatorial and authoritarian leadership in Nigeria as portrayed in Niyi Osundare’s The State Visit. It documents Osundare’s protest towards the high spate of political chicanery amongst Nigerian leaders and its attendant effect of squalor and poverty amongst the citizens. The research adopts the content analysis methodology as well as the qualitative approach as it uses Osundare’s The State Visit as paradigm for the handful of political satires within the Nigerian dramatic landscape. Amongst others, the paper observes that tyrannical leadership constitutes a huge factor that militates against the growth and development of most African countries especially Nigeria. The study also brandishes satire as a unique art form that sets out to occasion positive change through the mechanism of corrective laughter and ridicule. It is for the foregoing that the paper advocates the dire need for the enthronement of purposeful and effective democratic leadership in Nigeria. Ideological commitment amongst Nigerian playwrights is strongly canvassed also in the study-a commitment towards crafting plays that harp on national bonding, solidarity, security and development.

La Vision Tragique dans le Roman Africain d’expression Francaise: Etude de Pour une Poignee de Gombos de Sophie Adonon
Kalu Wosu, Elikwu Juliet

Anthropo-Linguistic Place of Women in the Igbo Society: Illustrations from Igbo Proverbs
T. Udemmadu
In the Igbo world-view, women are seen as second class and subservient beings. This paper investigated the assertion and further inquiries the rationale behind the contention using Igbo proverbs as a yardstick. Through observation of native speakers’ speech events, deliberations with some Igbo native speakers and the researcher’s intuitive knowledge, data for the research were collected and analyzed using critical discourse analysis. After the analysis of data, some of the findings were that in Igbo cosmology, women are not equal to men; men are more equal than women. Therefore, the Igbo philosophy which is mirrored through their proverbs, places women in a position less than that of the men. Because proverb as an oral tradition is transmitted from one generation to another, the position of women in the Igbo society transcends from past to the present and to the future. It is the position of this paper that despite so many agitations by women to elevate their position, women will continue to be seen as less important until the psyche and orientation of the Igbo people about women are changed.

Historical Narratives of Women’s Contributions to Education in Northern Nigeria
Aisha Balarabe Bawa
From time immemorial, women have made tremendous contributions to the development of their respective societies. These vary greatly with each successive stage of human development. Northern Nigeria is patriarchal in nature which is a major feature of a traditional society where powerful cultural traditions undermine the rights of women. They are therefore discriminated upon from, in most cases, acquiring formal education. Girl’s educational opportunities tend to be circumscribed by patriarchy, parent’s preference of education of boys than girls. In spite of the social pressures on women such as early marriage, and other extraneous factors as well as practices, many women are breaking glass ceiling and contributed greatly in educational development in Northern Nigeria. This paper used a historical analysis to discuss women’s contributions to education. The paper examined these contributions in tripartite structures: Pre-colonial, Colonial and Post-colonial and argued that Nana Asma’u bin Fodio’s scholarly position and intellectual contributions to the development of women education were the major factors for the solid foundation of women education. Key words : Northern Nigeria, Women, Education, Pre-colonial, Colonial, Post-colonial
