Food for Specified Health Uses{FOSHU)regulatory system was established in 1991 in Japan, and since 2001 FOSHU has been categorized one of the Food with Health Claims(FHC)under the new system. The numbers of currently approved FOSHU are 806 items(7th, Nov.2008). They were analyzed in terms of the current status and the transition during the recent decade from the view point of the labels of health claims and functional components. Thereafter, a short history on a couple of FOSHU regulatory system is introduced.

Dietary fiber would decrease mineral bioavailability because it may have cation exchange capacity, bind mineral ion and form complexes difficult to absorb in intestinal lumen, as phytin does. But in actually, many dietary fibers have already appeared to be a good source of minerals especially in mineral deficiency, even if some dietary fibers contained considerable amount of phytin. Moreover, some dietary fibers and other luminacoids, proposing term as dietary components which are not digested and/or absorbed in the human small intestine and which exert physiological effect that are useful in maintaining good health via gastrointestinal tract, appeared to improve mineral bioavailability.

Three-fold amounts of ordinary intake (2 pieces by 4-times) of sugar alcohol-containing chewing gum were ingested by 15 male and 15 female subjects 4-times in a day (total 24 pieces) for 1week, and the effects on blood biochemical parameters, urinary property, fecal conditions including fecal frequency and constituents and abdominal symptoms were observed. The study design was randomized single blinded placebo controlled crossover experiment. A total of 24 pieces of test chewing gum contained total sugar alcohols 21.9g (maltitol 14.4g, xylitol 7.2g and others 0.3g) and placebo gum was replaced with sucrose instead of sugar alcohols. No high osmotic diarrhea was caused in every subject. Fecal conditions including fecal frequency and constituents were not significantly different between test and placebo chewing gum groups. Abdominal symptoms were also not significantly different between test and placebo chewing gum groups, but flatus frequently occurred in test chewing gum group. Biochemical data and components of blood and urinary properties were not affected by ingestion of test chewing gum. These results are demonstrated that even 3-fold amounts of ingestion (24 pieces) of ordinary intake of sugar alcohol-containing chewing gum in a day does not induce harmful effects in healthy subjects and the ordinary intake of sugar alcohol-containing chewing gum is safe.
共有24块测试口香糖含有总糖醇21.9g(麦芽糖醇14.4g,木糖醇7.2g,其他0.3g),安慰剂口香糖用蔗糖代替糖醇。

Transition of definition and determination method of dietary fiber
Pub Date : 2007-06-30 DOI: 10.11217/JJDF2004.11.1
S. Kurasawa
Relationships between determination methods and definitions of dietary fiber were reviewed and discussed with history of analysis methods. 1) The definition accepted at the Japanese Association for dietary fiber Research, the definition of AOAC-AACC and the definition established in Europe were introduced. There are items about a physiological function in these definitions of dietary fiber. However, it is only the item of digestibility that Enzymatic-Gravimetric Method deals with the definition. It is difficult to make the physiological function in an alimentary canal reflect in assay. 2) Evaluation was carried out from the historical side of Established methods and Official methods of determination. It was discussed that what kind of DF which can be analyzed or cannot be analyzed as quantitative analysis on the basis of the feature of an analytic principle. 3) Newly Method "A Simplified Modification Method of AOAC Official Method 991.43 (Enzymatic Digestion under Constant pH) (J.AOAC Int. 90, 217-237(2007))" which was authorized by Japanese Association for Dietary Fiber Research was introduced too.
