The last article published by Aldina da Silva before her death was entitled: “The fear of change. Jonah and the “whale””. She presents the prophet Jonah, who dares to disobey the word of his God, as being the symbol of the “anti-hero” par excellence. When God asks him to prophesy against Nineveh, the capital of the powerful Assyrian empire, Jonah fl ees. He is, she says, afraid of change. Although we partly agree with the author

Our purpose is to bring out to what extent palliative care remains the central pivot insuring concretely, in the last analysis, the effective recognition of the dignity of the human person, namely her or his absolute dignity as an end, lending its ultimate meaning to the entire health profession. THOMAS DE KONINCK 170 Persons in a situation of extreme fragility, or suffering or handicap, prove, in addition, to be extraordinary awakeners to humanity, pure and simple. The model to keep in mind is that of the Good Samaritan.

Abstract This article o ff ers a narrative reading of the story of Joseph, a story that was familiar to Aldina da Silva. We will show how the theme of fear was deployed in this narrative. In order to do so, we will identify, on the one hand, the context in which the fear of God is expressed, and on the other hand, the circumstances in which human fear and its e ff ect are manifested. More concretely, we will demonstrate how Joseph, by creating a situation similar to the one in which his brothers had mistreated him, is able to help them face their past faults and express their inner fear. We will also examine how fear is linked to guilt, a feeling that changes the brothers’ hearts by giving them a chance to obtain forgiveness. Our study will also highlight the fear of God, the trust in his providence and the recognition of his role in history, as so many means for humans to overcome their own fears and to calm the fears of others. Understood in this way, fear pushes humans to move towards ever more sincere trust and greater love
