While the topic of Christian nurture is certainly not lacking in literature, this robust text uniquely draws upon a rich resource of interdisciplinary scholarship, highlighting the contributions of seminal educational scholars, biblical and theological insights, and rich socio-cultural analysis from the social sciences with particular application to the contemporary postmodern context. Engaging core theological themes and educational concepts from a diversity of scholarly perspectives, and replete with extensive endnotes, the text offers a fresh approach to the study of Christian nurture with relevant application to today ’ s world.

Charlotte Mason (1842–1923) was a well-known English educator whose work and legacy is certainly worthy of consideration today. One of the most interesting aspects of her philosophy of education is the fact that she adopts an anthropological approach: the consideration of the child as a person whose natural desire to know can only be satisfied with an education centered in the great books, the narrative method and the importance of relations. Her wide experience as a teacher, parental advisor, and teacher trainer, as well as the application of her method with surprisingly good results, constitute an endorsement of her proposal.

This article presents the composer Igor Stravinsky (1882–1971) as an historical educator in the context of the Charles Eliot Norton Lectures on Poetry at Harvard University (1939–1940), published as The Poetics of Music in the Form of Six Lessons. As music professors at North American institutions of Christian Higher Education, the authors each read Stravinsky’s Poetics with students in music classes. We describe here our different pedagogical methods and how we employ Stravinsky’s Poetics to form students with Christian approaches to culture-making.

Four writings by the medieval theologian Bonaventure (c. 1221–1274) provide inspiration for the future of Christian education. His writings cast a vision for Christian education and provide insight into four key areas for hope in the future: a reclaiming of the purpose of Christian education; a recovery of the Great Tradition; a rediscovery of the liberal arts and their natural role in cultivating wisdom and virtue and leading us back to God; and a renewal of the cooperation between the church and the academy.

Imparting education by Christian missionaries to the locals of a non-literate society was not an end in itself, rather it was a means to an end. Evangelizing needed to go hand-in-hand with church planting and institutionalisation of the church establishment. To fulfil this mission, it was necessary to deploy locals but first equip them with the ability to read and write, as reading the Bible is necessary for spiritual growth, which necessitated the introduction of education among the local youths. This paper delineates how the Christian missionaries groomed and deployed the local youths for evangelism among the Zo people in the Indo-Myanmar borderland.

This paper reports on a framework of thinking, memory and learning that emerged from a qualitative research study into the nature of learning for individuals with autism. The framework is useful for professional development of teachers regarding the learning characteristics of neurodiverse students with autism spectrum disorder. The paper provides a review of the neuroscience and memory-in-autism literature and introduces the Learning Ladder, a new evidence-based model that facilitates explanation of the learning characteristics of neurodiverse learners and serves as a guide for pedagogical decision-making. The application of the framework for teaching and learning within the context of Christian education is considered.

This article reviews the educational writings of historian Edwin Judge, particularly by providing a wider context for his paper The Undesirability of Christian Universities. It discusses differences between formal education and the churches in the Roman world and considers implications of these for modern Christian higher education. Given Judge’s argument for Christian involvement in secular universities (and against Christian higher education), it considers recent problems with secular universities, especially the phenomenon of academic ‘cancel culture’. To understand these problems, it considers the work of social psychologist Jonathan Haidt and ‘Heterodox Academy’. The conclusion encourages Christians to seek excellence in research.

In this article, we examine conceptions of giftedness through a Christian perspective and through a talent development paradigm (Subotnik et al., 2011). We intersect aims of Christian education with a developmental view of giftedness in order to inform pedagogical approaches in educating gifted/high-potential students. In applying the characteristics of Christian pedagogy of uniqueness, purpose, stewardship, and Christian character, teachers of the gifted can create contexts for students to explore authentic learning experiences in ways that develop specific strengths and talents for kingdom purposes.
