Rectangular waveform permanent magnet propulsion motor controlled by a PWM chopper is studied. The impact of low frequency chopping on armature current is analyzed by means of Fourier transformation. The conclusion is that low frequency chopping will result in the fluctuation of motor electromagnetic torque, which is proven by simulation and experiment.

In a direct torque control system, the stator resistance of induction motors varies with winding temperature. The variation severely influences system performance at low speed. The paper presents a stator resistance on-line estimator based on the fuzzy-neural network. The experimental result and simulation shows that the estimator can accurately measure stator resistance and efficiently improve system performance at low speed.

This paper deals with control of permanent magnet synchronous machines. Their control is a difficult task because their dynamics are strongly nonlinear. Generally, vector control is used with direct axis current control. However, a problem might arise with such systems in terms of electrical parameter variations and, especially, the mechanical parameters, more specifically the inertia moment of the encircling mass. An adaptive approach is an interesting alternative, when parameters of the machine are unknown or varying in time; in order that objectives imposed by the control are reached and maintained. An adaptive control scheme is presented based on the online parameter estimation of the system or of the regulator.

This paper presents a modified genetic algorithm solution to the unit commitment problem (UCP), and constructs three kinds of genetic operators. To enhance convergence rate of the algorithm and prevent converging at a local optimal solution, a gene complementary technology is proposed and is applied to the modified genetic algorithm, which is called a gene complementary genetic algorithm (GCGA). Simulation results show that GCGA is a very efficient algorithm for solution to UCP.

The optimal design of delicate magnetic scale for linear relation between the magnetic flux density and force is presented. The magnetic scale utilizes magnetic levitation force. The linear relation between magnetic flux density and force is shown by implementing additional metal structure on the magnet. The optimization is performed by using finite element method (FEM) and evolution strategy (ES).

General formulation of decoupling problem is presented and applied to the speed regulation of the induction motor under the assumption that disturbing inputs are equal to zero. The two subsystems: rotor speed and rotor flux, are treated as the reference model of adaptive control for the next section. An adaptive law is presented to counteract the harmful effects of disturbances, which cause the loss of decoupling and linearizing. It Is proved in the paper that the errors between outputs of reference model and control object are exponentially convergent to zero, and the system is stable. By choosing parameters, the algorithm reduces the complexity of calculation at the same time. This makes it more suitable for the speed control system performed by the high-speed DSPs. Simulations show that flux and speed are still decoupled during the transient of the system. The proposed control is suitable for high-dynamic performance applications.

Permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) has a excellent performance and will see a wide use in electric vehicle (EV) application. But some improvements should and can be done to make it more suitable in an EV drive. In this paper, asymmetric airgap and its optimal design, field and circuit coupled design method and winding switch of PMSM are put forward and analyzed, and are verified to be valid by experiment or simulation.

This paper describes a novel starting method for the sensorless salient-pole brushless DC motors. In this method the rotor initial position is obtained with the initiative detection of phase inductance, and it succeeded in the brushless DC motors starting. The relations between phase inductance and the rotor position, and the factors affecting phase inductance are discussed.

A control strategy of a direct torque control (DTC) system for an induction motor fed with a GTO voltage source inverter applied to railway traction is introduced. Because the switching frequency cannot be high in the condition of high power GTO inverter applications, different control methods are adopted for different speed ranges: (1) when the speed is higher than the rated speed, a weakened flux DTC is used; (2) when it is lower than 30% of the rated speed, a kind of indirect torque control is employed to reduce the ripple of electromagnetic torque; and (3) if the speed is from 30% to 100% rated speed, the ordinary DTC with hexagon stator flux trace is applied to reduce the switching frequency. Both simulations and experimental results are presented in this paper.

This paper deals with a design method for the efficiency optimization of 223 MVA class superconducting generator. In consideration of the electrical characteristics based on electromagnetic analysis, GA (genetic algorithm), which has been successfully applied to various design problems in electric machines and devices, is used as an approach method of the optimized design with some variables and constraints. The results designed by this method are found to be reasonable and effective as compared with those obtained by the methods of trial and error until now.
