The Institute of Wood Science (IWSc) represented the interests and knowledge of wood scientists and wood technologists in the UK and beyond between 1955 and 2009 when it merged with the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3). In that time 27 presidents served, from industry or academia, leading the IWSc and guiding decisions relating to education, communication and the award of professional qualifications. The broad history of the Institute has been documented in 30th- and 50th-anniversary reviews published in the IWSc Journal. However, the contribution of the presidents to the success of the institute, as well as their reputations in wood science, wood technology or industry, has not been recorded. Approaching the 70th anniversary of what is now the Wood Technology Group of IOM3, this paper reviews the circumstances under which the IWSc was created and examines the contribution of each of the presidents to the health and success of the institute.

Several sectors produce more waste. Therefore, comprehensive steps are needed to ensure environmentally sustainable and economically feasible waste recovery. The main objective of the study was to investigate the potential of giving a second life to waste, which constitutes a heavy financial and environmental burden for the factories, by its valorisation in the manufacture of new materials such as insulation and energy-efficient construction materials. By a good choice of treatment and implementation methods, paper pulp waste was considered to be a raw material that can replace many synthetic products widely used in the construction field. The research aimed to characterise wastepaper for possible use as a raw material in composites for insulation in buildings. This was done with a drying treatment of the WP to eliminate the water content and analysed the chemical composition to ensure the absence of toxic elements where there might behuman contact. Analytical methods used were both physical and chemical such as granulometry, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy/EDX, Brunauer, Emmett and Teller and Fourier transform infrared. Finally, it was necessary to identify the thermal performance and microstructure for practical application.

This study aimed to characterise two little-known woods and discuss their potential to replace those heavily exploited in Cameroon's forests. Amouk (Detarium macrocarpum) and Dabema (Piptadeniastrum africanum) were characterised for their physical and mechanical properties. Density, shrinkage, desorption kinetics, shear strength, tensile strength and modulus of elasticity (MOE) in compression and flexion were determined. A Weibull analysis was performed to predict their failure. It was found that Amouk and Dabéma can be classified as medium-heavy wood with low shrinkage and desorption, following Midilli's empirical model. The physical and mechanical characterisations show that the density, strength and MOE parameters of the woods are close to each other and enable them to be classified as medium-strength woods. The probability of failure in compression follows Weibull's law. These woods can, therefore, be used in structural applications such as construction, replacing common woods.

Density, as the most critical information for wood materials could be predicted by near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy. Increment cores and thin wood samples of teakwood ( Tectona grandis) served as research materials for this new approach to sampling for NIR spectroscopy, explained in detail. Density data were combined with their NIR spectra data for analysis using cross-validation partial least squares regression as chemometrics to produce a density prediction model. A new approach of increment cores from teakwood stands for NIR spectroscopy measurements for density predictions resulting in a 0.34 coefficient of determination for cross-validation (R2CV) and 0.40 of R2CV for thin wood samples as the best result from the first derivative with 25 smoothing points of NIR spectra. The improvement from the previous research for density prediction accuracy resulted in an R2CV value of 0.55. The smaller diameter of the increment core sample than the NIR light beam's diameter and illuminated mixed surface (transversal and radial) are supposed to give weaker prediction accuracy by this new approach.

ABSTRACTBusiness success levels can be impeded by constraints. This study assessed the perception of successes and constraints in the rattan and cane furniture industry in Ghana. From 250 questionnaires distributed, 200 (80%) were retrieved for analysis at a 95% confidence level. Internal consistencies of questionnaire items for the 12 measures of successes and 22 measures of constraints were Cronbach Alpha 0.789 and 0.862, respectively. The results indicated greater success in the business with all items recording significant (P = 0.001) averages of 3.22–3.95 indicating moderate to very high success with increased income ranking highest. On average, many of the 22 constraint items were rated either moderately high or very high with a lack of financial and technical support being prominent and obtaining 83% to 100% affirmations. Frantic engagement efforts with government and non-governmental agencies are needed towards overcoming or reducing the constraints to enhance success levels towards individual and national growth and development.KEYWORDS: Furniture businessbusiness success factorsGhanaian furniturerattancane AcknowledgementsThe authors express their sincerest gratitude to Mr. Frank Oheneba Kwarteng, Mr. Benjamin Atenka, Mr. Bright Osei Bonsu and all the respondents for their support throughout this study.Disclosure statementNo potential conflict of interest was reported by the author(s).

ABSTRACTIn Morroco, Cedarwood lignivorous fungi cause significant damage to cedar groves. The losses have been estimated to be more than 30% due to these fungi. This latter brings about two primary diseases known as M'jej and Saboune. The study tries to show the molecular identification of the lignivorous fungi of the Atlas cedar in the cedar groves of Tazekka and Azrou and their biological control by the essential oils extracted from both the healthy and infected cedarwood. Therefore, this molecular research has identified three phytopathogenic fungi:(Paecilomyces maximus, Pleurostoma richardsiae, and Alternaria tenuissima). The data analysed in this study has also confirmed that the oil extracted from Saboune-infected wood showed a noticeable fungistatic effect against these fungi, with a MIC reaching 1/500, followed by the EO extracted from M'jej-infected wood. However, the healthy cedarwood gave an EO without antifungal activity. A mixture of these three oils gave significant antifungal results.KEYWORDS: BiocontrolCedrus atlantica Mcubic brown rot (Saboune)essential oilred ring rot (M’jej)Pleurostoma richardsiaePaecilomyces maximusAlternaria tenuissima‌ AcknowledgementsThanks to the research team of biology (CNRST), Atika BENAYAD, Siham CHAUIYAKH, and Samir BENAICHA.Disclosure statementNo potential conflict of interest was reported by the authors.

Therefore, this molecular research has identified three phytopathogenic fungi:(Paecilomyces maximus, Pleurostoma richardsiae, and Alternaria tenuissima). The data analysed in this study has also confirmed that the oil extracted from Saboune-infected wood showed a noticeable fungistatic effect against these fungi, with a MIC reaching 1/500, followed by the EO extracted from M'jej-infected wood. However, the healthy cedarwood gave an EO without antifungal activity. A mixture of these three oils gave significant antifungal results.KEYWORDS: BiocontrolCedrus atlantica Mcubic brown rot (Saboune)essential oilred ring rot (M’jej)Pleurostoma richardsiaePaecilomyces maximusAlternaria tenuissima‌ AcknowledgementsThanks to the research team of biology (CNRST), Atika BENAYAD, Siham CHAUIYAKH, and Samir BENAICHA.Disclosure statementNo potential conflict of interest was reported by the authors.","PeriodicalId":14414,"journal":{"name":"International Wood Products Journal","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136012593","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
