Application of mineral filler in surface layer of three-layer particle board and its effect on material properties as a function of filler content 矿物填料在三层刨花板表层的应用及填料含量对材料性能的影响

ABSTRACT Addition of mineral filler in the surface layer of three-layer particle board and its influence on material properties was studied as a function of filler content. Three-layer particle board with a density of 700 kg m−3 and 0, 10, 20, and 40% weight fraction (wt-%) of calcium carbonate filler in surface layers was produced in laboratory scale using urea formaldehyde as resin. The effect of inorganic filler on elastic and strength properties, dimensional stability and formaldehyde emissions was investigated. The results demonstrated that the addition of filler in amounts up to 10 wt-% in surface layers does not significantly affect mechanical properties. Further increase in filler addition above 10 wt-% resulted in a nearly linear decrease in bending properties and increase in water uptake, however did not significantly affect dimensional stability and formaldehyde emissions.

Predicting the bending properties of Larix sibirica lumber using nondestructive-testing methods 用无损检测方法预测西伯利亚落叶松木材的弯曲性能

ABSTRACT This study aims to investigate whether it is possible to predict the modulus of elasticity (MOE) and modulus of rupture (MOR) of lumber produced from different heights using the stress-wave velocity of standing trees or the dynamic Young’s modulus of logs in Siberian larch (Larix sibirica). A total of 190 pieces of lumber (38 by 89 mm in cross section) were cut from 111 logs obtained from 25 standing trees. Significant positive correlation coefficients were found between the stress-wave velocity of standing trees and MOE (r = 0.776) and MOR (r = 0.702) of this lumber. The dynamic Young’s modulus of the logs also correlated significantly with MOE (r = 0.745) and MOR (r = 0.584) values. The results obtained in the present study suggest that stress-wave velocity and dynamic Young’s modulus are useful for selecting superior trees in tree breeding and sorting logs for producing structural lumber.

Some properties of plywood produced from 10 cultivars of poplar 10个杨树品种胶合板的一些特性

ABSTRACT The aim of this paper is to study the possible influence of poplar cultivar and soil on the mechanical properties of plywood produced from 10 cultivars having grown in different soils. For each cultivar, two trees were harvested per station; crosscut into bolts then peeled 1.4 mm thick for one tree and 3 mm thick for the other one: in total, 80 trees were sampled. The veneers were used to make 160 boards using 2 adhesives: polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) and melamine-urea-formaldehyde (MUF). These boards were then cut into standardized samples for non-destructive and destructive mechanical tests. The properties of plywood were characterized by measuring their density, modulus of elasticity and modulus of rupture. The results showed that poplar plywood properties could be influenced by adhesive and veneer thickness. The cultivar and soil effects were never relevant. A tight correlation was found between destructive and non-destructive modulus of elasticity tests.

New uses for Areca Catechu tree 槟榔树的新用途

ABSTRACT The Areca catechu tree has been cultivated in large quantities and is widely planted in the mountains. In the modern world, its connection with oral cancer has reduced consumption. The felled trunks discarded in the hills caused an additional burden on the local environment. The most effective use is to grow ornamental plants. When betel trunks are used for planting the irrigation nutrients will not flow out quickly. When the root of the plant is gradually extended, the humus fibre of the trunk is closely combined with the root and forms an excellent planting environment. Other reuse ideas about the sheath proposed with specific light shadows with a unique texture. An adhesive was utilized to combine wood sheets into block material and further process into everyday products. The particulars of the materials, examples of application, and the possibility of cultural design applications were discussed.

Reactivity, characterization and mechanical performance of particleboards bonded with tannin resins and bio hardeners from African trees 非洲树木单宁树脂和生物硬化剂粘合刨花板的反应性、特性和力学性能

ABSTRACT Gilbertiodendron dewevrei tannin extract was characterized using MALDI–ToF and CP MAS 13C NMR methods. These two characterization methods have proven that catechin gallate is the dominant constituent. Subsequently, the G. dewevrei tannin bio-resins hardened with the exudates of Vachellia nilotica, Vachellia seyal, Senegalia senegal, Acacia siebteriana and the fruit powder of V. nilotica from the extreme north of Cameroon were studied using gel time analysis and thermomechanical analysis. Analysis indicated that the cross-linking species in these hardeners was 2,5-dihydroxymethyl furan linked to carbohydrate chains. The extracts obtained in comparison to paraformaldehyde cured adhesives in equal proportions (10%) show that the ‘biohardener’ had properties for adhesive and eco-friendly applications. The internal bond (IB) strength of G. dewevrei resin-bonded panels using biohardeners ranged from 0.46 MPa to 0.61 MPa, the MOE and MOR values were from 1880.23 to 2226,52 MPa and 14,17 to 16,41 MPa. All particleboards prepared presented exterior grade capabilities.

ABSTRACT This work examined the enhancement of bending strength properties of two wood species, namely fir and pine, reinforced with two carbon fibre fabrics (CFF) of different areal weight, in two different layouts. CFF applied in the bottom surfaces of the specimens (‘F’-type) and in the second wrapped in the bottom surfaces and up to the half of the lateral surfaces (‘U’-type).The results indicated that samples which are reinforced with CCF show higher MOR and MOE values than the controls and this improvement was found to be significantly different. The reinforcement layout affected the bending properties of both pine and fir wood, since the corresponding values are higher in U-shaped reinforcement than in F-type reinforcement, at identical CFF areal weights. In the case of fir wood, the CFF areal weight did not significantly affect the bending properties.

ABSTRACT This article evaluated the technical viability of producing edge-glued panels (EGPs) with wood from three Brazilian dry forest species and five adhesives. Experimental design was completely randomized, involving 3 wood species, 5 adhesives and 5 replicates, totalizing 75 observations. Test specimens were separated into groups, each one submitted to a different experimental condition or after a pretreatment: dry condition; moist condition; after 6-hour boil test; after a boil cycle test. Glueline performance indicators were the 5th lower percentile and the percentage of wood failure. The three wood species showed good potential for EGPs and two adhesives were able to withstand the 6-hour boil test and the boil cycle test. Despite a negative correlation between extractives content and 5th lower percentile was observed, when the adhesive melamine-urea-formaldehyde (MUF) was used, this detrimental effect was overcome and all the joints reached the minimum strength required by the technical standards.

ABSTRACT Integrated crop-livestock-forest (iCLF) systems are consolidated as alternatives for multiple use of agricultural lands to produce grains, meat, milk, timber and non-timber products. This article reports the analysis of the wood quality of a eucalyptus clone grown in conventional homogenous plantation and iCLF system and evaluated at 7-year age. For this purpose, 12 and 36 trees, respectively, from a conventional plantation and the iCLF system, were collected and sampled to determine their chemical composition (ashes, extractives, total carbohydrates and lignin contents) and physical–mechanical properties. Higher contents of ashes, extractives and holocellulose were found in wood from the iCLF system. Wood from that system had higher density and both static bending and compressive strength. Linear and volumetric shrinkage as well as the anisotropic factor were not influenced by the management system. Despite being juvenile, the wood from iCLF can be employed for industrial uses, notably sawn lumber and firewood.

UV stability is important as well as the final fate of the composites so their ability to biodegrade into harmless components must be assessed. In this paper, Tarun Kumar Maji and his team at Tezpur University in India have investigated the potential of WPCs made using rosin derivatives as binders.
