In this study, plywood surfaces were coated with different nanocellulose-based suspensions. Moreover, we analysed the effect of boric acid (BA), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and melamine formaldehyde (MF) on surface properties for some coating suspensions. According to the results, gloss values of plywood surfaces coated with nanocellulose-based suspensions changed depending on nanocellulose type, matrix type and number of coating layers. It was determined that coated plywood surfaces had low and medium gloss properties. When surface hardness values of coated plywood samples were analysed, it was observed that increasing the number of coating layers and addition of different kind of matrixes increased surface hardness values of the coated wooden surfaces up to the highest level (7H). Furthermore, it was determined that addition of BA, PVA and MF with various concentrations to nanocellulose-based suspensions declined water contact angles (WCA) of wooden surfaces coated with these solutions by reducing surface hydrophobicity.

The magnetorheological finishing technique based on a stationary curved tip tool is found less effective in finishing external cylindrical surfaces. Therefore, three revolving flat tip tools-based magnetorheological finishing process which utilises the rotation of both workpiece and tools have been developed to address the issues of the existing method. Also, a feed mechanism has been built to provide the longitudinal movement to the workpiece. A workpiece of mild steel has been finished by both developed and existing methods. It has been observed that after finishing 1 hour 30 minutes with a stationary curved tip tool, surface roughness values Ra, Rq, and Rz decrease by 69.29%, 64.41%, and 61.26%, respectively. Whereas, the reduction in the surface roughness value of Ra, Rq, and Rz by 85.38%, 84.51%, and 82.7%, respectively, have been noted after finishing with the three revolving flat tip tools process at the same parameters and conditions.

The recognition of the friction state of revolute pairs can help with the monitoring of their operating conditions. A new method for recognising the friction state of revolute pairs based on motor current signature analysis was proposed in this paper. Current signals were decomposed and multidimensional features were extracted by variational mode decomposition. The support vector machine was trained by ensemble learning, and a combined classifier was built. The friction state of revolute pairs at this moment could be evaluated precisely after their friction feature signal was recognised by multiple types of classifiers with different classification intervals, and the time before dry friction could be preliminarily estimated. The results indicate that, the change of the friction state of revolute pairs could be represented completely by analysing the stator current features of the motor driving the revolute pairs and extracting the multi-domain and multi-dimensional friction features.

The present study elaborates and compare about process variation of electrical discharge coating process through powder mixed and powder metallurgy (semi-sintered) electrode that influences mechanical and metallurgical properties of over duplex stainless. Occurrences of surface roughness, poke, splatters and carters are minimal in deposition of pyrolysis carbon while using the powder metallurgical electrode process of deposition than of powder mixed. Coating layer thickness and porosity are greater in powder mixed having a similar decarburising depth that deserves hardness values with an average of 1,001 HV to 1,010 HV across its section. Pyrolysis carbon restricts alloying element deposition that reduced frictional coefficient with greater wear rate compared with the powder metallurgical process. The metallurgical characterisation is performed through a scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), phase identification through X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), optical microscope (OM), mechanical testing through Vickers microhardness, and wear testing by pin-on-disc (POD) tribometer.

The signal quality of antennas and waveguides in the transmission of electromagnetic waves are very much dependent on the surface finish of these devices. Effects of pulse parameters on the surface properties of silver coatings of the copper substrates have been analysed in terms of surface roughness and S-parameter (scattering parameter). The duty cycle, frequency and average current density were used as three pulse parameters. Three levels were selected for each parameter in the experimental design. The surface finish was found to be directly proportional to duty cycle and average current density but inversely proportional to frequency. The S11 scattering parameter observations were made relative to a gold-plated reference coupon. It was analysed that the smoother surface had more reflection power in terms of S11 parameter thus decreasing the loss of radiation.

The current study pertains to the influence of chosen process parameters on erosive wear of F6NM stainless steel. Response surface methodology was used to plan experiments. Response surface method with face centred composite design has been adopted to develop a regression model. Development of erosive wear model was based on five factors, which included sediment concentration (A), particle size (B), angle of impact (C), test duration (D) and rotational speed of slurry (E). A mathematical model was developed to predict the deterioration through wear on F6NM stainless steel and the appropriateness of the model was certified using analysis of variance. A robust correlation is attained between the model predicted and experimentally obtained values for weight loss and the percentage of error is 12%. On the basis of mathematical model, single objective optimisation of parameters has been performed with genetic algorithm (GA) technique and this method yields reduction of 34.78% for material wear.
