A phenomenological model of the limiting behavior of frequency selective limiters is presented. The model accurately predicts the steady state power transfer characteristic and the shape of the spike leakage pulse. A circuit technique to minimize the spike leakage has been investigated and results are shown.

A new band-pass filter design technique is presented that uses coplanar passive interdigitated filters assisted by an MMIC active component which performs a negative resistance with an associated imaginary part in order to compensate for the losses of the passive filter and to reduce significantly the length of the resonators. A tunable version of the filter is also presented.

A 240 W power FET for cellular base stations of a next generation system has been developed. The FET consists of four 60 W chips, which were fabricated by using our high efficiency and low distortion device technique, combined in a push-pull configuration. The developed FET achieved 240 W (53.8 dBm) output power, 11.2 dB linear gain and 54% power-added efficiency at 2.14 GHz. This is the highest output power device using GaAs FET technology.

An improved and accurate technique for the reconstruction of radially dependent permittivity profiles in cylindrical objects illuminated by higher order TE- and TM- cylindrical modes is presented. The technique is based on a general kind of integral transform of the measured frequency dependent reflection data and the recently suggested renormalization technique to obtain a unique solution of the corresponding inverse problem. A dummy time variable has been introduced to improve the overall reconstruction process. This variable has then been transformed into the spatial one via a simple integration routine. A number of reconstruction examples have been considered and a very good agreement has been found between the original and the reconstructed profiles even for very high values of permittivity.

CHRISTINE is a multi-frequency large-signal helix TWT code. Code predictions are compared with data from an L-band TWT; in general, the model and data agree to better than 1 dB, demonstrating the code to be a useful tool for TWT design and the development of external linearization techniques.

Optical LO distribution to a rotating antenna has been studied. An optical demonstrator has been built with four microwave links and one optical digital link. Signals at different wavelengths are travelling in both directions along the same optical fibre. Measurements of additive phase noise show that the required specifications in S- and C-band can be reached: -135 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz offset. Electric isolation between channels and optical feedback inducing degradation of phase noise have also been studied and solutions have been proposed to improve these parameters.

This paper proposes a method to measure the amplitude and the phase of the spectral tones present in both sidebands of a microwave amplitude modulated RF signal. The method exploits once more the phase conservation property inherent to the frequency down conversion operation performed by an envelope detection circuit while a pair of filters bring the needed discrimination on the side-tones.

A new spectrometer for the precision measurement of dielectric permittivity and loss tangent is presented. The new instrument is capable of providing the high resolution data for the first time over extended W-band (68-118 GHz) frequencies for specimens with a large range of absorption values, including highly absorbing specimens which otherwise would not be possible. A novel technique based on the unbalanced bridge is developed for the measurement of the phase of the wave passed through the specimen in free space (quasi-optical) with reference provided by a waveguide arm. Specially constructed precision waveguide and quasi-optical components allowed reliable broadband operation. A number of common dielectrics are measured and results are compared with previously reported data.

This paper presents a simulation method to compute noise in autonomous and forced circuits using the harmonic balance (HB) formulation. Thanks to iterative linear solvers and multi-dimension conversion matrices, it can handle large multi-tone circuits to calculate phase noise spectra near and far from the carrier frequency. Its efficiency is illustrated with two real circuits.

A novel triple-push oscillator approach is proposed for the first time. This new oscillator topology combines three identical oscillator subcircuits. An analytical formulation is derived to present all the current modes. As will be shown, odd mode currents in each oscillator subcircuit have a 1200 phase shift to one another and thus produce in-phase combining for the third harmonic signal. To prove this concept, a 5-GHz triple-push oscillator was designed and fabricated on an FR4 substrate. The measured results showed that at 4.86 GHz, an output signal of 1.7 dBm was delivered with 12.7-dB suppression of the fundamental frequency.
