A polar dielectric effect is characterized by a spectrum of relaxation which follows Debye's model when the relaxation time is slightly distributed generally the polar aspect appears through the frequency measurement of the dielectric permittivity of which the real part interprets dispersion and the imaginary part interprets the absorption. We propose a process which allows the instantaneous description of polar dielectric material without conductivity or with a poor conductivity. Sample under test excited by a level of tension answers by another level of tension which is a temporal response.

Beside the classical oil analysis there were new methods to determine the condition of the electric insulation system of transformers. The aging of the insulation system is influenced dominant by the water content of mineral oil. For this reason the moisture determination with chemical analysis and dielectric measurements were essential.

N,N'-di(1-naphthyl)-N,N'-diphenyl-(1,1'-biphenyl) 4,4'-diamine (NPD) is often used as a hole-transport material in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). The polycrystallization of organic films in OLEDs is thought to be one of the degradation factors of the device performance. It is found that the generation and growth of polycrystalline region in NPD film can be efficiently suppressed by alternate deposition method. The generation of polycrystalline region in the alternate structure specimen depends on the top layer material. The OLEDs having alternate hole-transport layer have the similar initial EL properties as the OLEDs having organic alloy and only NPD hole-transport layer.

From the experimental results some conclusions can be drawn as follows. The properties of mixture between mineral oil and natural ester from palm oil in general strongly affected by the ester content. Increasing the ester content significantly enhance the dielectric breakdown. The increase of the ester content also resulting in a higher the losses factor especially at temperature of 100degC. Viscosity and density of the mixture slightly increased with the ester content but significantly decreased with temperature. The acidity of the oil mixtures almost linearly increased with the ester content. Taking into account the requirements from standard, the mixture of natural ester from palm oil and mineral oil with ester content of 50% is considered as good enough to be used as a high voltage insulating liquid.

Field-effect transistors were prepared with magnesium phthalocyanine (MgPc) and vanadium pentoxide (V2O5). Vapor treatments of several organic solvents were carried out for MgPc thin films. The UV-vis absorption spectra, surface morphologies, X-ray diffraction patterns were largely changed with the treatments. The FET characteristics were also improved by the treatments and dichloromethane treatment induced the largest improvement. Furthermore, V2O5 film, which is used as carrier generation layer in organic light-emitting diodes, were inserted in the FET and the FET characteristic was changed. The vapor treatment and V2O5 insertion should be used for controlling FET performance.

Subsea installations on the sea bed at great depth require insulation materials with high reliability. Failures of such installations introduce difficult maintenance and high costs. This involves the need of reliable (insulation) materials and testing of such. The purpose of our activity is to build a test facility that can test both well-known and new insulation material samples as well as high voltage systems and apparatus. The qualification methods are based on existing international standards, with the aim of proposing and qualifying new QA and FAT tests for the subsea service environment. This paper presents some of the tests we have carried out on insulation materials. The experiments showed that the atmosphere is important; humidity introduces the risk of build up of a connection (solid bridge) between the electrode and insulation surface. High pressure reduces the area exposed to surface discharges and thereby increases the wear of the surface on that smaller area.

We proposed a quantitative method to calculate water content of the thin materials by terahertz (THz) imaging. First, we constructed a THz imaging system by using a Tunnel injection Transit Time (TUNNETT) THz wave generator with automatic scanning control. Images of the plant leaves under different conditions were taken with the THz imaging system. We have introduced an algorithm with the attenuation law of Lambert-Beer to calculate the water contents from the THz imaging. To verify the accuracy of this method, we also took images of a piece of filter paper with different content of water. Comparing the calculated result with the measured value by the electronic balance showed that our method has a good possibility to measure the water content of the relative thin materials with non-contact and non-invasive method from the THz imaging.

It has been proved earlier that electric properties of polymer insulation can be improved by addition of nano-sized inorganic filler. These materials have attracted a lot of attention. With the addition of nano sized MgO filler in Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE), several improvements in material properties were observed and were already reported. In this paper, investigations on the volume resistivity and space charge distribution in XLPE/MgO nanocomposite (MgO nano-filler mixed with Cross Linked Polyethylene) material are reported. Investigations on packet like charge, observed earlier in LDPE, are also made both for XLPE and XLPE/MgO nanocomposite materials. The results indicate the suitability of XLPE/MgO nanocomposite material for HVDC insulation.

To suppress charge injection at electrodes, direct fluorination using fluorine gas was used in linear low density polyethylene. High fluorination degree was obtained as indicated by attenuated total reflection infrared spectroscopy. Remarkable suppression of charge injection due to the surface fluorination was found by the space charge distribution measurements using the laser-induced pressure pulse method. The possible suppression mechanisms of charge injection were discussed, one of which, the effect of fluorination on the charge traps in surface layer was deeply investigated by the thermally stimulated discharge technique. The results indicate that fluorination caused the charge traps in surface layer remarkably deepened and the charge captured in the deep traps blocked or shielded the further charge injection.
