Literary work is not only a reflection of the socio-cultural conditions of a particular time but also a display of its people’s development of thinking. This study aims to describe the social situation of French society in the nineteenth century portrayed in the short story ‘Le Papa de Simon’ by Guy de Maupassant and explain the social criticism conveyed by the author. The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative. Data in the form of words, phrases, and sentences were collected by library study techniques. Data in French were translated by the researcher and the results validated by native speaker. Data analysis was performed by grouping, interpreting, and studying the sociology of literary approach. The results of the study prove that (1) all narrative elements of the short story supported the depiction of social conditions (2) regarding the institution of marriage, family values and religion in nineteenth-century French society. (3) In addition to reflecting human character, Maupassant also proposes social criticism primarily related to the impact of low education, poverty, social inequality and the discrimination of women. From this study, it was found that the author conveyed his criticism of human cruelty in society, which often resulted from obeying to rules and norms.

There are various words used to express basic emotions, such as Anger, Sadness, Joy, and Fear both literally and figuratively. This study focused on metaphorical expressions, one of the figurative expressions to convey Sadness in English and Japanese. Every culture has a different concept in expressing emotions metaphorically. So, this paper describes how English and Japanese express their Sadness through metaphor, and how they think Sadness is an analogy or a comparison to something else. Data were taken from the sadness metaphor listed by Kövecses (2000), Esenova (2011) English and Japanese song lyrics. A qualitative method was used in analyzing the data in a framework of semantics theories. The results show that English and Japanese have similarities and differences. The similarities can be contributed to the universality of conceptual metaphors and the differences can be related to particular culture modes in English and Japanese.

This study aims to describe the strategy and meaning of the tweet on Twitter with the hashtag 2019GantiPresiden. This type of research is descriptive with a qualitative approach. Data source in the form of uploaded Twitter account with 2019GantiPresiden hashtags in the form of verbal writing. Data collection techniques using the stages of reading and note-taking. Data analysis techniques were also carried out in-depth using critical discourse analysis methods adapted from the Fairclough (1995) model, namely (1) description, (2) interpretation, and (3) explanation. The results of the study found three speech strategies that were used by the 2019 non-presidential twitchy uploaders, namely (1) distorting facts, (2) analogies, and (3) satire (satire). This strategy forms a societal ideology, namely (1) the ideology of rejection of government policies, (2) the ideology of defending people's rights, and (3) the ideology of justifying their group.

The problem formulation in this study is how is the Representation of Ideology in tvOne's Indonesia Lawyer Club (ILC) Program based on the microstructure of critical discourse analysis model Teun A. van Dijk?. The purpose of this research is to describe the Representation of Ideology in the Program Indonesia Lawyer Club (ILC) tvOne based on the microstructure of the analysis of the discourse ktiris Model Teun A. van Dijk. The method used is descriptive research method with qualitative approach. This research data is the speeches of speakers in the talk show Program Indonesia Lawyer Club episode 03 December 2019 with the theme "Back and Forth FPI Permit". This study used the technique of transcribing ILC video talk shows and grouping ILC talk show transcription data into the structure/level of van Dijk's microstructure discourse. The structure or elements presented by Van Dijk to be analyzed are about thematic (theme or topic), schematic (schematic or plot), semantics (background, details, intent, preconceivedence, nominations), syntax (sentence form, cohesion, pronouns), stilistic (lexicon) and rhetoric (graphics, metaphors, expressions). The results showed that each structure/element is an ideological representation of semantics involving the background used in each segment of the ILC show. This can be revealed in more detail through each question thrown by the host, Karni Ilyas. These sentences use conjunctions that connect the causes spoken by the sources and can also be marked by the use of pronouns. A stilistic ideological representation of Islamophobia that states that there are people or groups of people who are very anti with Islam, they want to divide the Indonesian nation. The rhetorical ideological representation in each segment can be seen from the expressions of the speakers who are sometimes relaxed, focused and there are also two tensions between the speakers. In representing its ideology, speakers use distinctive language styles, such as the metaphorical style "smoke grenade", "islamophobia", and "belling/selebre case".

This study investigated two syntactic aspects of Balinese proverbs, namely sentence types and sentence functions. Descriptive qualitative method was applied in this study. The data were obtained from a Balinese proverbs book entitled Paribasa Bali by Ginarsa (2009), and analyzed based on Mac Coinnigh’s framework (2015). The results revealed that a number of Balinese proverbs have simple sentence type, while few of which have complex, compound, and compound-complex sentence type. Additionally, not all Balinese proverbs can be considered as a sentence, since some of which appear in the form of incomplete sentence and dependent clause. Meanwhile, in terms of sentence functions, the most common form among Balinese proverbs is declarative/indicative function, followed by some interrogatives, imperatives, and few combinations of two sentence functions. These findings indicate that Balinese people are more likely to use simple sentence and declarative/indicative function when it comes to passing proverbs in everyday context. However, it is also implied that Balinese people have the tendency to employ various types and functions of proverbs for specific purposes, such as performance and religious purposes.
