Self-collimation characteristics of the two dimensional metallic photonic crystals are studied for the TM and TE polarizations, respectively. The Drude dispersion model is adopted to describe the metal and the self-collimation behaviors for the TM and TE light beams along different directions are obtained for the near-infrared light waves. And a polarization beam splitter based on above structure is designed, which can avoid the output light propagating direction is influenced by the alteration of the incident direction of light beam within a certain region.

Remote sensing image quality is sensitive to the system design parameters such as modulation transfer function (MTF), signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and ground sampled distance (GSD). In this paper, two concepts about NIIRS and optical Q are presented, and each part physics means in model and formula are illustrated separately, then three influencing factor of sampling rate, pixels of smear, and SNR for the image quality are specific analyzed by simulating and comparing, finally, the optimum design of remote sensors are discussed, and the method to improve the image quality scale is posed for remote sensing systems. Comparisons with preliminary calculation results show that image quality scale of remote sensing systems can be improved by increasing along-scan sampling although more validation experiments are needed.

We propose and demonstrate a wavelength re-modulated WDM-PON implemented by reflective semiconductor optical amplifiers (RSOAs) using 4B/5B and 4B/6B line codes, which have higher coding efficiency than Manchester code, for downstream modulation. The experimental results show that 4B/5B and 4B/6B line codes allow using unsaturated RSOAs as upstream re-modulator, thus improving power budget compared with NRZ code.

A new unsymmetrical photochromic diarylethene, 1-(2-methylpyridine)-2-[2-methyl-5-(3-cyanophenyl)-3-thienyl]perfluorocyclopentene(1a)was synthesized and its photochromic and fluorescent properties were investigated. It underwent reversible cyclization and cycloreversion reactions upon alternating irradiation with UV and visible light both in solution and in PMMA film, and the Diarylethene 1a changed the color from colorless to violet in PMMA film and to magenta in solution upon irradiation with UV light .This new photochromic system also exhibited remarkable fluorescence intensity and clear fluorescent switches by photoirradiation both in solution and in PMMA film. And rewritable holographic optical storage using 1a was performed. At last, optical recording using diarylethene 1b as recording medium was carried out successfully.

Based on digital image processing technique, the paper studied and implemented an image analysis software system of foliage feature parameters. The system integrated the methods of Image enhancement, morphological processing and boundary tracking to preprocess the photo image of plant leaves that contains the calibration object; use the boundary tracking to get the boundary information, use the boundary chain code method the pixel method, the minimum external rectangle (MER) and other methods to measure the more than ten general characteristics of the leaf perimeter, including the parameters, area and rectangular. The results showed that measurement accuracy can basically meet the requirements of botanical investigation.

In this paper, the threshold value of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) was measured over the temperature range of 10-45°C in liquid water. The experimental results indicate that influence of temperature on the threshold value of SBS is very distinct. The threshold value of SBS decreases with the increase of temperature. On the basis of theory and experiment, the physical mechanism of the temperature dependence of SBS has been analyzed.

We demonstrate an improved technique to grow glancing angle nanostructured thin films of silver and copper using electron-beam evaporation. Silver has particular interest for optical metamaterial activity, but unlike most other metals, the surface mobility of these atoms makes it difficult to grow distinct nanocolumns. By cryogenically cooling the substrate, we demonstrate that these metals can show marked improvement in their nanocolumn structure.

The photophysics and laser action of the organic dye Rhodamine 6G (Rh6G) confined in polymeric nanoparticles, mainly based on copolymers of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and 2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate (HEMA), are analyzed as a function of dye concentration, as well as size of the latex particles. The optical properties of these suspensions are found to be dependent on the nanoparticle size. The dye encapsulation in latex particles leads to observe high fluorescence and this fact impels us to study these systems as active media for tunable lasers, since they show a good lasing performance by non-resonant feedback of the emission. These materials open new routes to active disorder-based photonic devices.

Potassium Dihydrogen Phosphate (KDP) crystals are one of the most popular crystals used for Non-linear Optical (NLO) applications. Most of the amino acids also exhibit NLO properties; therefore, the effect of doping of one of the amino acids, DL-methionine, in KDP crystals has been investigated. Pure and DL-methionine doped KDP crystals were grown by slow solvent evaporation solution growth technique. For growing the doped crystal, 0.3 and 0.4 weight percent DL-methionine was added to aqueous solution of KDP. Good quality transparent crystals were obtained within 8 to 10 days. Doping of amino acid DL-methionine in grown crystals was confirmed by the CHN analysis and FT-IR spectroscopy studies. The powder XRD indicated the single phase nature of samples and the unit cell parameters were not altered much due to doping. The value of second harmonic generation (SHG) efficiency and optical transmission in UV-Vis spectra increased as the doping of DL- methionine increased in KDP crystals. The variation of dielectric constant, dielectric loss (tanδ), with frequency of applied field in the range from 100 Hz to 100 kHz is reported. The dielectric constant and dielectric loss decreased with increase the value of frequency of applied field. The dielectric constant and the dielectric loss of DL- methionine doped KDP crystals were lower than the pure KDP crystals. Thermal stability of the grown crystals was studied by employing thermo-gravimetry analysis (TGA). It was found that the doping of DL-methionine decreased thermal stability of KDP marginally, but enhanced optical properties.
