Gastronomy, an intelligent knowledge of whatever concerns with man's nourishment, is a broad and fertile field that is increasingly explored during recent decades. But, far from the ancient period Ayurveda explains the concepts of Matrasan, Aharavidhi, Anupan, Aharakal etc. A compiled knowledge of both concepts will be fruitful for the mankind in different ways. The main objective is to correlate the ancient Ayurvedic concepts and modern gastronomy to establish a food habit for proper nourishment and prevention of diseases. An extensive analysis and compilation of salient information regarding the concepts of food and nutrients were done by reviewing Ayurveda literature, Pubmed and other scientific databases. Ayurveda has its own universally accepted principles, methods and practices revolving around the concept of food. According to that food is one among the factors used to determine the health of an individual. Several examples given in Ayurveda literature in terms of wholesome food supplement (Pathya) are practically indicated in disease management. Understanding of incompatibilities of food materials and processing i.e. Virudhaahara, Prakriti as a key determinant of effect of food on body system, rules and regulations while intake and preparation of food were other gastronomical concepts in Ayurveda. Since the incidences of lifestyle disorders are increasingly demanding a proper food habit, both Ayurvedic and gastronomic concepts can be utilized for a better life.

Ayurveda delineates dosha dushya sammurchana as cause of vyadhi and samyata of dosha provides arogya. Panchakarma is a pentagonal cleansing process of Ayurveda where, it eliminates vitiated dosha. There are different types of shodhana therapies have been described in samhita like vamana, virechana, raktamokshana etc. out of which raktamokshana is considered as best therapy for pitta and rakta pradoshaja vyadhi. So raktamokshana by different modalities is much more effective in resolving pathogenesis in these diseases. The process of raktamokshana can be traced back to the vedic period. Acharya Susruta has mentioned regarding bloodletting in detail in his treatise. To expel out the vitiated blood, seven procedures are advocated; Sira Vedhana (Venesection) Sringa avacharana (Horn application), Alabu aavacharana (Gourd application), Jalouka avacharana (Leech application), Pracchana karma (Scrapping), Ghati Yantra avacharana (Cupping glass application) and Suchi avacharana (Needle application). Raktamokshana can attenuate several conditions foremost related to rakta dushti vikaras. Here an attempt has been made to recollect details regarding raktamokshana prescribed in treatises.

Arka lavana is a well-recognised and highly effective Lavana kalpana. Lavana preparations are widely and largely prepared in pharmacy as well as used by practitioners of Ayurveda for different ailments. In Lavana kalpana particular heating pattern is followed for drug along with lavana in a sharava (earthen crucible) by subjecting it to putapaka. Arka lavana is one of the commonly used preparation containing very safe and easily available herbo-mineral drugs. It is mentioned in various classical texts like Bhaishajya ratnavali, Rasatarangini, Vangasen, Gadanigraha etc. A scrutiny of classical literature revealed use of Arka lavana in Yakrit-pleeha roga, Gulma, Ajirna, Agnimandya and Udara. Sufficient literary, preclinical and clinical data is not available to prove its mode of action. Thus, present study aims to review all possible references of Arka lavana and formulation ingredients to establish its probable mode of action.

The science of Ayurveda has its base in the darshanas. Ayurveda adopts the theories from darshanas with necessary modifications so as to suit its practical utility. Vaada is the methodology of discussion proposed by darshanas. Indian philosophers used vaada to unveil the unknown from known and Ayurveda utilises all the available philosophies according to the context to justify its aim i.e to prevent and cure diseases. Vivartavaada is the theory of causation propounded by Vedantha. Vivartavaada and its concepts being pure philosophical cannot be as such applied in Ayurveda as it is a practical science, but the concepts of avidya, maya, adhyasa, and athma that it upholds is an integral part of Ayurveda as it is a holistic science involving both the body and the mind. This article briefly discusses the concepts postulated in Vivarthavaada and its implications in swastha, rogi and chikitsa.

Soil analysis is useful for cropping pattern so as to increase crop yield and to maintain long term productivity. The farmer's main objective is to maintain the productivity of his soil. An excessive use of fertilizer which is not utilized for crop production can pollute the environment. For this purpose, it is very important to consider as to what the crop requirement for various nutrients is and what their actual use is. In this study, components of soil such as pH, Salinity (EC), Nitrogen, Phosphorous and Potassium Fe, Cu, Mn, Zn were analyzed by different instruments like pH-meter, spectrophotometer, flame photometer and conductivity meter. The soil analysis was done for both Irrigated and Non-Irrigated area. The values of pH, Salinity (EC), Nitrogen, Phosphorous and Potassium, Fe, Cu, Mn, Zn were observed in moderate to slight increased or decreased range. The values for Irrigated areas were observed different than Non-Irrigated areas.

Herbal medicines have a huge therapeutic history for a long period of time and still serving many more health requirements in the worldwide. Although there is a still very huge challenge in its quality control and quality assurance; because of the high variability of chemical compounds present in it. Herbal drugs, singularly and in combinations, contain numerous complex matrices in which not a single active constituent is responsible for the overall efficacy. This creates a challenge in establishing quality control standards and standardization of finished herbal drugs. Many drugs in Ayurveda describe regarding treatment of vicharchika (Atopic dermatitis). Arka taila is one of them. In this study Arka taila was subjected to study organoleptic analysis, phytochemical analysis, and qualitative analysis to detect the presence of various functional groups, and thin layer chromatography (TLC) examination by optimizing the solvent systems. The investigation revealed the density, Refractive index, Saponification value, Rancidity, Total fatty matter and Iodine value mainly and also subjected to in vitro antibacterial assay against human pathogens MTCC No.39-Klebsiella aerogenes, MTCC No.10239Escherichia coli, MTCC No.1034Pseudomonas aeruginosa, MTCC No.6908Staphylococcus aureus by Mueller hinton agar well diffusion method. The results of this study suggest that Arka taila can be used as an antibacterial agent against infections caused by Klebsiella aerogenes, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus.

The bathing was almost universally followed practice in antiquity. It was of religious, cultural as well as therapeutic values. Before scientific medicine, Asclepions were the healing temples, which were always built near a river or spring and worked as today's clinic and hospitals, where water was used for therapeutic purposes. Hippocrates also described the different kinds of water as well as the therapeutic property of bathing. In the Roman and Arabic periods, Hammam was too popular and it was social practice. The bathing Houses were highly sophisticated building. The physicians of medieval age also considered hammam as one of the important resigns in the art of healing. They were described as the different kind of Hammam and their therapeutic importance.

Background-Dadru is one type of kustha which manifests in skin mainly irrespective of age & sex, whose description resembles ringworm or dermatophytosis. In modern science the clinical manifestation of dadru is closely similar to local infection/ tinea infection which is affecting 15% of population. Dadru comes under oupasargika roga. It is contagious, spread person to person by malaja krimi through sweda (contact with infected person, contact with clothes of infected person). Methods-the method used is a survey method with cross sectional approach, with a total sample 103 patients. The epidemiological characteristics of respondents surveyed consisted of the characteristics (santarpanaja nidan, gender, knowledge, occupation & personal hygiene), the characteristic of the place (population density), and the characteristic time diagnosed (months). Results-The results showed that the epidemiological characteristics of dadru were more in female sex (65.04%), with low elementary education (87.37%), had less knowledge about disease (76.69%), did not maintain personal hygiene enough (57.28%), excessive intake of santapanaja nidan (91.06), residential density had not qualified (88.34%) and most likely diagnosed in the period of June to August (57.27%). Conclusion-The incidence of dadru in Kolkata are increasing day by day. So, proper treatment protocol is needed to treat these patients. In Ayurveda, different types of preventive measures including dincharya have been mentioned to prevent spreading of oupasargika roga.
