The development of a flywheel uninterruptible power supply incorporating electrolytic capacitorless inverters and converters, optocouplerless power device drive circuits, loss reduction of high-frequency insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) inverters, and high-response regeneration control of the induction motor is described. Results from experiments performed on a three-phase, 5 kVA uninterruptible power source show that the system provides over 15 years of life, 100% input power factor, a 1% output voltage distortion, and a 93.4% efficiency.<>

The MPFB (multiple PC/processor field bus), a real time data collection and process DCS (distributed control system) field bus network that serves at a Bitbus, is discussed. A review of the history of field buses and computer integrated manufacturing systems is presented. The architecture, protocols, and characteristics of the MPFB are described. It is shown that, unlike the Bitbus, the MPFB provides a good distributed network environment for the real-time process DCSs, the field office automation systems, and the broadband integrated services.<>

Changes in the quality factor, Q, of a solenoid due to nearby nonmagnetic conducting objects are investigated. The influence of distance and supply frequency on the quality factor is calculated. The results are applied to estimate changes in parameters such as temperature and distance. The results show that changes in Q may be satisfactorily used to monitor physical properties of the workpiece, such as distance or temperature, without physical contacts.<>

Permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) operate at a high power factor, efficiency, and reliability. To achieve the performance of DC machines, the PMSM drive is vector controlled. Such a drive is described. The instantaneous position of the rotor is used to determine the required currents which the controller forces into the motor. The actual current is compared to the required or commanded current, and hysteresis or ramp comparison current controllers are used to force the actual current to follow the commanded. Detailed circuits and experimental results are provided. Operation in the flux weakening region is also shown.<>

The operation of two series-connected static voltampere reactive (VAR) compensators suitable for 3 phi AC arc loads is described. The circuit model for an arc furnace and factors contributing to the determination of the equivalent circuit parameters are discussed. Two types of active compensators, shunt compensators and a cycloconverter are discussed briefly. The operating principles for a single phase of the current-source-fed and voltage-source-fed converter, three-phase power circuit representations, and the analysis for a single phase of a current and voltage-driven series converter, including graphical results, are presented.<>

Methods for calculating the voltage distortion produced by nonlinear loads, and design concepts for reducing the distortion are described. The impact of reducing saliency in the rotor construction and in the damper windings on the impedance of the generator to harmonic currents is analyzed. It is shown that generator voltage distortion under nonlinear loads can be controlled by either one of two methods, overrating the generator to make the nonlinear load a smaller percentage of the generator rating, or reducing the internal impedance of the generator to the harmonics of the nonlinear load current.<>

An analysis of the starting performance of tuned delta-modulated inverter-fed submersible motors is presented. Submersible motors are induction motors that have unique constructional features. These motors are required to operate in one of the most harsh environmental conditions. The operating characteristics of a submersible motor pump system require soft starting facility and variable-speed operation. To satisfy both requirements, a delta-modulated inverter supply is proposed, and the system starting performance is presented. The soft starting characteristic of the motor is obtained by the inherent V/F control of the delta-modulated inverter. The analysis is carried out using time domain representation of inverter voltages and the d-q axis model of the motor. The time-domain representation of inverter voltages is done using gate functions. The starting performances of submersible motors improved substantially. Though the analysis and results presented in this paper are for a submersible motor, they are equally applicable for any type of polyphase induction motor.<>

PALSS (performance assessment of lightning shielding systems), a computer program for the evaluation of the performance of overhead lightning shielding systems, is discussed. The program is written in C-language and is enhanced with illustrative graphics. The analytical method used by the program is based on a three-dimensional implementation of the electrogeometric model of the lightning stroke, shielding system configuration, and structures that are to be protected. A Monte Carlo technique is used to manipulate the statistical distributions of the lightning stroke parameters to yield a quantitative assessment. Examples of the use of PALSS in studies on a substation and a commercial building complex are presented.<>
