Abstract The electroconductive polyacrylonitrile(PAN)/polyaniline composite can be synthesized by the electrochemical polymerization of aniline on the PAN-coated Pt electrode in acetonitrile/water medium. The electrochemical properties of PAN/polyaniline composites were investigated comparing with polyaniline.

Abstract Organic electroluminescent (EL) devices with color tunable function using poly[N-(p-diphenylamine)phenylmethacrylamide], PDPMA doped by various fluorescent dyes (nile red, DCM, TPP) as a polymer hole transporting material and Alq3 as a host emitting material were fabricated. The fluorescent dyes used as guest emitting materials. The luminescence of the doped devices was significantly influenced by the amount and the structure of the fluorescent dyes. Especially, the DCM doped device emitted red light with the brightness of 1500 cd/m2.

Abstract The charge transfer characteristics of molecular homo-films composed of green fluorescence protein (GFP) were investigated by time-resolved fluorescence measurement. In this work, time-resolved fluorescence decay of GFP homo film was measured to investigate the solid-state fluorescence lifetime and to observe the charge transfer by using time-correlated single photon counting method (TCSPC).

Abstract Selective deposition of gold particles on a patterned substrate was studied for fabrication of a single electrons transistor. In the present study, a selective positioning technique was achieved using atomic force microscope (AFM). Various self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on silicon surface such as hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS) and octadecyl dimethylmethoxy silane (ODMS) SAMs were prepared as a system for AFM lithography. A uniform pattern was engraved on the SAMs. The selective deposition of gold was efficiently accomplished. This gold particle assembly was characterized by AFM.

Abstract With controlling the amount of methyltrimethoysilane (MIMS) in silica films via sol-gel process, the surface free energy of the films has been changed. The contact angle was Measured to characterize the modifeid was determined, and correlated to the surface characteristic (hydrophobicity) of the films.

Abstract A mesogenic long-chain tetraphenylporphyrin and its metal complexes(Ni(II), V˭O(IV) and Si(OH)2) were studied on the mesomorphism and photoconductivity in a symmetrical sandwich-type ITO cell. These complexes show so-called “lamellar-type” mesophases having a layered structure like smectic mesophase. The photocurrent behaviour of these compounds were compared to clarify the characteristic properties of photoconductivity for lamellar mesophases.

Abstract A single anionic conductor (SAC) was employed to improve the hole injection properties in an Al anode/SAC/poly[2-methoxy-5-(2′-(ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene) emissive layer/indium tin oxide cathode device. The SAC possesses an excellent hole-injection property, because of ionic space charge accumulation near the anode by the good chain segmental motion of the soft block in the polymer chains of the SAC. Thus, a balanced injection of an electron-hole pair can be achieved to greatly improve the quantum efficiency.

Abstract The average direction of molecules and the absolute value of an effective second order nonlinear optical constant (∣d eff 7∣) were simultaneously determined using a new second harmonic generation (SHG) phase measurement with theoretical curve fitting. The theoretical curve fitting process was demonstrated using poled poly (methyl methacrylate) films doped with p-nitroaniline (PNA/PMMA), which were used as a reference and a sample. The second harmonic (SH) interference generated between the two poled PNA/PMMA films was modulated by rotating the phase generator inserted between the two. The fitting process derived d eff itself. The average direction of molecules was shown by the sign of d eff . The obtained value of ∣d eff ∣ was verified by that from a Maker fringe measurement. The obtained average direction of molecules coincided with that determined by a poling geometry.

Abstract We have synthesized green light-emitting material, poly(3,6-N−2-ethylhexyl carbazolyl cyanotere-phthalidene)(PECCP), which has an electron-donor and electron-acceptor moiety in a repeated unit of polymer. Organic light-emitting diodes were made with PECCP Langmuir-Blodgett(LB) films in a sandwich structure between indium-tin-oxide(ITO) and aluminum electrodes. Z-type LB films were manufactured using a Kuhn type to use for an emissive layer. We have observed green photoluminescent and electroluminescent spectra at λmax = 536 nm corresponding to 2.31 eV.

Abstract A conventional DSC was used to investigate the thermal curing behavior of methylsilsesquioxane (MSSQ) which transforms into the low dielectric constant material, poly(MSSQ). Temperature scan of MSSQ up to 350°C revealed that the curing of MSSQ is an endothermic reaction that occurs over the wide temperature range. From the isothermal scan of MSSQ, it was found that the curing of MSSQ follows the first-order reaction.
