Abstract The purpose of this study was to compare male physical education majors from four countries in terms of somatotype and body size. The subjects were 317 majors from Universities in Brussels, Dunedin, Prague, and San Diego. Somatotype ratings were made according to the Heath-Carter Method. Individual somatotypes were plotted on somatocharts and the distributions compared. The San Diego group was older, taller, and heavier than the other three groups, as well as being higher on endomorphy than the Prague or Brussels groups. The Prague students were less endomorphic than the other three groups. None of the four groups differed on mesomorphy, ectomorphy, or the height-weight ratio. The somatotypes of all four groups were distributed primarily over the mesomorphic sector of the somatochart, but there were significant differences among the distributions. The San Diego group appeared to be more endomesomarphic, and the Prague group more ectomesomorphic than the other groups. It was concluded that physica...

Abstract Socialization theory suggests that members of a group tend to possess the values, attitudes, and behaviors that are normative for that group. Earlier research indicates that this is true of members of certain occupations. Research on values also indicates that adults tend to become more conservative in value orientation with age. The Polyphasic Values Inventory (PVI) was sent to 330 college football, track, and basketball head coaches to ascertain their value orientations on selected dimensions of value difference. Chi-square tests of independence were used to determine whether coaches in the three sports were significantly different in value orientation and whether coaches over 40 years of age were significantly different from those under 40 years of age. No significant differences were found on any of the 20 items of the PVI when comparing coaches from the various sports. Furthermore, no significant differences were found on any of the items between coaches over 40 years of age and coaches unde...

Abstract The relationship among time components of the left ventricle, endurance performances, and oxygen consumption during a standard work load (1107 kg · m/min) in a supine position on a bicycle ergometer were investigated. The subjects were 100 male volunteers, 17 to 23 years of age. A moderate correlation (multiple R = .64) was found among cardiac time components and endurance performance (all-out bicycle ergometer ride time). The pre-ejection time components (i.e., electromechanical lag and isovolumetric contraction period) cannot be considered good predictors for endurance performances or oxygen consumption. Mechanical systole was found to have the most net predictive value in the various combinations for predicting all-out ride time, mile-run time, and oxygen consumption.
