Compliments and Compliment Responses among Palestinian EFL University Learners: A Sociolinguistic Study 巴勒斯坦大学英语学习者的赞美和赞美反应:一项社会语言学研究

This study investigates compliments and compliment responses from a sociolinguistic perspective as realized by forty Palestinian EFL university learners. The investigation focused on identifying how the participants perform compliments and compliment responses in English. Moreover, it addressed the asymmetries in this field among male and female participants. The researchers created a discourse completion task (DCT) to collect data. The collected data were analyzed based on the analytical framework of Yuan (2002) of compliment strategies and the analytical framework of Herbert (1990) of compliment responses strategies. The findings of the study show that Palestinian EFL university learners tend to perform explicit compliments more than other compliment strategies. The learners also tend to accept compliments more than reject them. Besides, there are no significant gender asymmetries among Palestinian EFL university learners in terms of how they perform compliments and compliment responses. Finally, the findings reveal that social status does not affect the way Palestinian EFL university learners express and respond to compliments. Humanized Microhistory of Translation: The Case of Modern Arabic Literature in English Translation 人性化的翻译微观史:现代阿拉伯文学在英语翻译中的应用

Throughout history, translators have played a vital role as cultural agents in shaping the histories of different nations and cultures. Nevertheless, the translators’ role has been largely ignored in translation history research studies, which have often focused on the texts translated. Therefore, many scholars in translation history research (Adamo 2006; Munday 2014; Pym 2009) have argued for the importance of studying translators themselves. The present study draws on the method of microhistory and applies it to the Arabic translation tradition by analyzing the life, personal relationships, and statements of one of the leading translators of Modern Arabic Literature (MAL) into English, Denys Johnson-Davies (J-D). The paper explores and analyses J-D’s autobiography, interviews, and paratextual materials accompanying his translations in order to better understand how J-D’s experience as a translator and cultural agent can shed light on the bigger picture of MAL translation history. The data analysis reveals insights into the status of translation during the different periods of MAL translation history. This includes the publication of Arabic-translated literary works into English, the reception of MAL by the English readership, and the reception of translators and their work by Arab authors and governments during the different periods of the translation history of MAL. This study also confirms the argument that the study of translators is a valid, useful method for researching translation history. Vulnerable Lives and Culpability in American War Narrative: A Comparative Approach 美国战争叙事中的脆弱生命与罪责:比较研究

This paper analyses Kevin Powers’ The Yellow Birds (2012), Phil Klay’s Redeployment (2015), and Roy Scranton’s War Porn (2016) in terms of vulnerability of Iraqis’ lives in the context of the 2003 War on Iraq. It aims at uncovering the differential methods implemented by Americans to approach the lives of locals in Iraq and culpability for war atrocities. It draws on Judith Butler’s contention that Western societies address the lives/deaths of non-Western people in a differential method; the lives of Western people are prioritized at the expense of the safety and wellness of non-Western peoples. The argument is made through comparative analysis of selected works in two constructs: ‘vulnerable lives,’ and ‘accountability and culpability in war’. This paper argues that Powers and Klay’s works are more centred on soldiers’ victimized status, whilst Scranton’s is keen on showcasing Iraqis’ vulnerable position and soldiers’ accountability for their anguishes. Question Types in Lecture Rooms: EFL Setting as an Example 课堂提问类型:以英语课堂为例

This study aims at exploring the types of questions that English as a Foreign Language (EFL) instructors and students raised through lecture rooms interaction. The participants of the study consisted of 4 EFL instructors and 60 English Language majors from Ajloun National University / Jordan. Two observation sheets were used to collect data. The Chi-square test (X2) was used to analyze data. The results of this study showed that the total number of questions raised by the instructors was 106, whereas the students raised 73 questions. The instructors used three types of questions: Yes /No questions, closed and display questions and open and referential questions. The results also showed that the number of open and referential questions was low and inadequate. On the other hand, the types of questions raised by students were mainly Yes/No, closed and display. The number of open and referential questions was also low and inadequate similar to the instructors'. There were no statistically significant differences between male and female instructors and students in the number and types of questions raised through classroom interaction due to gender. It was recommended that EFL instructors should raise different types of questions, mainly open and referential ones, to increase lecture room interaction and help students think critically and creatively.Keywords: EFL, Question Types, Classroom questions, Classroom Interaction, Display questions, Open question, Referential questions

The Legitimacy of Liberal Feminism in Preeti Shenoy’s Select Texts 普里蒂·谢诺伊《文本选集》中自由女权主义的合法性

Postmodernism is a philosophical movement that comprises many perspectives. Feminism is a postmodern perspective and deals with all genders having equal rights and opportunities. Liberal feminism is one of the branches of feminism. Liberal feminism is concerned with women and their suffering, especially how they overcome all the impediments and make decisions independently. The aim of the study is to delve into the postmodern perspective of liberal feminism in Preeti Shenoy’s selected texts, The Secret Wish List (2012), Tea for Two and a Piece of Cake (2014) and It Happens for a Reason (2014). Preeti Shenoy is a famous Indian postmodern writer, and her contributions to liberal feminism cannot be denied. Liberal feminism is part of the feminist movement; it deals with women protagonists and their suffering. From those sufferings, they liberate and take all the decisions independently. Liberal feminism elucidates women empowerment. The precursors of liberal feminism and distinguished thinkers associated with the movement include Mary Wollstonecraft, John Stuart Mill, Susan Moller Okin, Martha Nussbaum and Zillah Eisenstein. The present study has adopted the elements of liberal feminism as presented in their works. The methodology of the study has adopted the concepts of liberal feminism such as moral theory, theory of justice, advocating educational and social equity for women, constructing a theory of capitalist patriarchy and socialist feminism, and capability approach. These theories substantiate the aspects of liberal feminism as manifested in Shenoy’s selected works. The results of the study are evaluated with other studies considering liberal feminism. Pre-translation Analysis of International Legal Discourse: From Social Semiotics to the Concepts of Lotman and Bakhtin 国际法律话语的翻译前分析:从社会符号学到洛特曼和巴赫金的概念

The discursive model of pre-translation analysis of international legal discourse relies on interrelated modules: the document conceptual space, with the harmonized value opposition between the concepts of "legal justice" and "compensatory justice", "common good" and "sovereignty"; the discourse addresser / addressee, embodied in the metonymic nomination "parties of the document"; the translator as an intermediate system, the semiospheres; extra-textual internalized realities. "Unifying" modules include semiospheres of international universal and basic branch documents, as well as universal human values and a shared internalized reality. The shared values underpin basic discursive strategies of consensus, solidarity, cooperation, marked by explicit and implicit intertextual means and additional strategies for minimizing imposition and hiding differences, implemented with tactics of generalization, mitigation and declarativeness based on passivation, nominalization, "marked theme", etc. Separating modules include semiospheres of the parties national legislations, marked by "without prejudice" clauses, metonymic nominations of "sovereign power", hedges scaling down the directive modality and idiomatic references to "public safety", etc.; semiospheres of recursive and procursive international branch texts that could be interpreted as conflicting with the document and are involved by 'non-affection' clauses and constative speech acts to fix the supremacy of one document over another. The document conceptual space may reflect the diverging interests and values of the parties, derived from implicit opposition between "legal justice" and "compensatory justice", harmonized by the documents. Manipulation or Censorship in Translating the History of Algeria:Dhākirat-Al-jasad as a Case Study 阿尔及利亚历史翻译中的操纵或审查:Dhākirat-Al-jasad个案研究

This paper investigates the translation strategies used by Raphael Cohen in his English translation (2013) and Mohamed Mokeddem in his French translation (2002) of the postcolonial Algerian novel Dhākirat Al-jasad (1993) written by Ahlem Mostaghanemi. It tells the story of Algeria’s struggle against French colonialism and the socioeconomic crises it faced after independence. We attempt to elucidate how the literature of formerly colonized peoples is translated into Western languages. We apply the concept of Orientalism (Said 1978 1979) from the postcolonial theory, in addition to Gramsci’s (1971; 1992) concepts of “cultural hegemony” and “consent”.Our goal is to examine whether the two translators resorted to manipulative strategies when rendering the terms that constitute the symbols of the Algerian war of independence used in the novel, such as "shahīd” and “Mujahid”. We propose that translating postcolonial literature to a Western hegemonic culture could be used to maintain hegemony, even when the translator belongs to the source culture. Cohesion of Textual Structure in the Saudi Vision 2030’s Introduction 沙特2030愿景导言中的语篇结构衔接

The paper begins with defining a set of accredited foundational concepts and terms such as cohesion, textual structure, and Saudi Vision 2030 before it moves to examine various manifestations of cohesion in the chosen text by examining the following cohesive ties: Reference and the referential cohesive devices that are represented by pronouns, demonstratives, relative pronouns, and comparative particles; conjunction along with its four types: additive, adversative, causal and temporal; ellipsis, given that it is a cohesive relation in both its particle and nominal categories; substitution in both its nominal and verbal manifestations. The conclusion sums the results and the recommendations reached throughout the research: the coherence of the text within a unified framework, the explicit collaborative spirit through the use of pronouns referring to the leadership and the people, the accurate use of time combining between the present and the future, representing thus the clarity of the vision and its relatedness to reality; in addition to other used ties that serve as linking chains between the components of the text engulfing it in extra layers of coherence. Moreover, the paper confirms the necessity of conducting further linguistic studies that consider the Saudi Vision’s text as its main case study and tackle it from different angles to demonstrate its unity and cohesion. Le chiffre astronomique qui correspond à la production de l’intelligence humaine informe que la recherche des connaissances et sa transmission par le biais de l’écrit est une mission ardue. Dans cette nouvelle, Borges excelle à imaginer un monde infini de cultures dispersées de manière labyrinthique entre les pages des volumes illimités de sorte que l'esprit humain ne puisse pas les saisir et en profiter. C’est pourquoi, les visiteurs de cette bibliothèque sont rebutés par ce labyrinthe terrifiant de messages écrits. Après nous avoir mis devant l'impossibilité de bénéficier concrètement de cet édifice incommensurable, l’écrivain invite implicitement l’humanité à revoir sa conception de la production de l’écrit. Par l’inscription de cette contribution dans le domaine de l’argumentation des émotions dans les discours, l’étude que nous présentons s’attèle à mettre en évidence la dimension émotionnelle dans les deux premiers discours du président algérien Abdelmadjid Tebboune au début de la crise sanitaire liée au Covid-19. Outre le fait qu’en de telles conjonctures, le recours au registre émotionnel négatif au niveau discursif soit en tous points compréhensible, nous supposons que notre locuteur étaye également des émotions positives. L’enjeu de l’analyse consiste donc à vérifier, dans le corpus, cinq critères parmi les sept proposés par Micheli dans son ouvrage les émotions dans les discours (2014) qui, selon l’auteur, sous-tendent toute schématisation discursive. L’approche adoptée dans ce travail est essentiellement descriptive. Il sera ainsi montré comment certaines données langagières du corpus satisfont les cinq critères sélectionnés, et partant tendent à étayer des émotions positives nonobstant le contexte tendu de la situation.
