The study examined the crux about global warming, greenhouse effect and ozone layer depletion among pre-service biology teachers. A survey questionnaire adapted from Kalipit, Yener & Ozkadif (2009); Rye, Ruba & Wiesenmayer (1997) and Boyes, Chambers & Stanisstreet (1995) was administered to 65 pre-service Biology teachers purposively selected from the Department of Science and Technology Education, Lagos State University, Lagos. This was to determine the pre-service biology teachers’ perceptions about global warming, greenhouse effect and ozone layer depletion. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results showed that pre-service Biology teachers had misconceptions that the results of thinning of ozone layer will increase greenhouse effect and the function of ozone layer is to protect the earth against excessive heat. Furthermore, majority of the preservice biology teachers had misconceptions on global warming, ozone layer depletion and greenhouse effect. It is imperative, therefore to proffer solutions to these misconceptions held by the pre-service teachers by ensuring that instructors and instructional materials emphasize the importance of these concepts to life ensuring that students have adequate knowledge about the concepts as well as ways of tackling these challenges. The study examined the influence of family background on students’ dropout from secondary schools in Yakurr local government area of Cross River State. The study adopted the descriptive survey design and paired t-test and independent t-test were used in analyzing the data collected. The instrument for data collection was a structured questionnaire known as the family background and students’ dropout questionnaire (FBSSDQ)made by the researcher. One hundred and fifty (150) students were randomly sampled from five (5) selected secondary schools from the study area. Fifty (50) students were used for trial testing outside the population of the study. Kuder Richardson 20 (KR20) reliability estimate was used to determine the reliability indices of the three sub variables as follows: family size = 0.78, parents’ attitude = 0.81 and parents’ socio-economic/educational status = 0.73 respectively. The results showed students do drop out from schools and that this situation is attributed to certain factors such as family size, parents’ attitude, parents’ socio-economic status and educational background. It was recommended that parents should be fully educated on population size and education, there should be a massive education campaign to enlighten the parents and the general society on alternative ways of checking school dropout and the government should not shift the whole responsibility of financing education to parents since most of the parents are financially handicap and poor. Keyword: family size, parents’ attitude, parents’ socio-economic status, dropout.

Given the laudable purposes attached to study of Basic Technology in JSS, it is therefore important that students retain the skills and knowledge acquired in the course of studying the subject in the school. However, sadly, the intended effect Basic Technology as a subject in the secondary school system should have, has not been seen in the generation of able manpower readily employable for the economy. The study investigated the difference between the retention ability of male and female senior secondary students in Basic Technology, and how school type (public/private) influence retention. Two research hypotheses were formulated for the purpose of the study. The research design used in carrying out this study is Ex–post facto design. This study covered the Southern Educational Zone of Cross River State, Nigeria. The population of the study comprised all senior secondary school three (SS3) students in the government-owned secondary schools and private-owned secondary schools in the southern educational zone of Cross River State. The sampling technique used is stratified random sampling technique. The sample size for this study was 487 senior secondary school three (SS3) students drawn from fourteen schools in seven local government areas of southern educational zone. The research instrument used in the study is the achievement test. The statistical analyses techniques adopted to analyze the data collected were dependent t-test and independent t-test respectively. Findings of the study showed that there is no significant difference in retention between males and females, public and private schools in senior secondary school in Basic Technology. Based on the findings of the study, recommendations were made which include that there is a need to focus on the female folks in the execution of national policy on education. This study shows that the female folk arecapable of achieving and retaining as much the male folks during learning. Much effort should be made by the government to bridge the disparity between male and female folks in enrolment into and completion of the secondary school education. This study examines the relationship between head teacher leadership style and mathematics student’s academic performance in Abi local government area of Cross river state, Nigeria. Three null hypothesis were formulated to guide the study. A random stratified sampling technique was used to select or sample one hundred and ninety (190) students and ten (10) head teachers from the population of the study. Two instruments were developed for data collection known as Head Teacher Leadership Style Questionnaire (HTLSQ) and mathematics achievement test (MAT). Pearson product moment correlation coefficient (PPMCC) was used to analyze all the three null hypothesis. The findings revealed that: there is a significant positive relationship between democratic leadership style and student’s academic performance and there is no significant relationship between laissez fair leadership style and student’s academic performance. It was concluded that head teacher leadership style influence student’s academic performance. It was therefore recommended that head teachers should undergo in-service training on leadership style of administration of schools and as a matter of concern use mostly the democratic leadership style. Since the inception of higher education, it has been observed that academic staff has been catalysts who have been propellers of the development of higher education through teaching (lecturing), learning, researching and community development when necessary tools and materials were provided to enhance effective teaching and learning of students who invariably become the leaders of tomorrow. But for some decades now, the higher institutions have been criticized for not providing students what it takes so that they can compete favourably with their counterparts in international markets. This unwanted assumption has happened as a result of mismanagement of academic staff in terms of staff development, proper incentives, infrastructure decay such as office accommodation and motivation, proper remuneration, delay in payment of salaries, staff training and retraining, fringe benefits and promotion when due. Based on the stated facts, highly qualified, competent, dedicated, diligent, skilled academic staff always find their way out to where their needs would be met rapidly. This movement of academic staff in tertiary institutions have negative effect on the institution and also the students in that they would be no immediate replacement to fill the vacuum and this can affect their academic performance and expert. If rapid and pragmatic approach for retention is not given proper attention, the academic staff leave the system to seek for a place where there are better conditions of service possibly in overseas countries such as the United Kingdom. If they find that there is disparity, they leave where they were for where better conditions of service are available. This paper suggests various ways where retention of academic staff would be given proper attention to curtail brain drain to the bearest minimum. Keywords: Retention, brain drain and academic staff
