Professional interpreters are bound by the code of conduct to interpret everything that has been said in courts. In particular, the manner that the propositional content is conveyed in the target language. Using the experiment method and questionnaire instruments, the mixed-methods research investigates the manner of speech and its interpretation in virtual courtroom discourse during remote interpreting. The working article presents the initial findings from two questionnaire instruments: one for demographics and general knowledge about speech style and discourse markers, the other for views and strategies related to the manner of speech in the interpreted utterances. Questionnaire data collected from fifty consented interpreters revealed the three main views on the rendition of the manner of speech: complete disregard as “irrelevant”, verbatim rendition without pragmatic considerations, and pragmatic equivalents for its possible impact on the court decision, ethical conduct, and professionalism. The findings intend to inform future pedagogical practice.

During the first waves of the COVID-19 pandemic and the ensuing lockdowns, there was an observable increase in social and political attention paid to gender-based violence in our national context. This, in turn, has highlighted the important role of the Austrian Violence Protection Centres, also revealing the need to facilitate easier access to these services for non-German speaking clients through interpreters. To find ways to mirror close-to-life situations in our interpreting classes that reflect current technological developments, acute societal issues and complex institutional contexts, we developed a research-led semi-structured role-play concept, with the goal of preparing students for technical, ethical and emotional challenges pertaining to remote interpreting in sensitive contexts. To validate the effectiveness of the role-play, we used two simulations of interpreter-mediated online counselling sessions and conducted post-task interviews with involved students acting as interpreters.

The way in which PSIT services are provided to national government institutions in Slovakia, the opportunities for professionalisation, training and social recognition of translators and interpreters differ from the standards of quality set by theory (e.g. Giambruno, 2014, Valero-Garcés, Tipton, 2017). The coutry has significant problems in the availability of PSIT in minority language combinations and fluctuation in the quality of the services provided (Štefková, Bossaert, 2019). In the face of a major increase in demand for PSIT in the current crisis situation related to the transfer of a large number of displaced persons from Ukraine the paper (1) reports on an initial research on the state of PSIT provision in this crisis situation in Slovakia and (2) on the basis of the needs analysis, describes the basis for setting up a sustainable PSIT translation and interpreting model.

Los acontecimientos que hemos vivido en los últimos años como la pandemia sanitaria por la COVID-19 o la guerra entre Rusia y Ucrania han conllevado cambios en el trabajo de los traductores e intérpretes en los servicios públicos. En el ámbito médico, donde los límites del papel del intérprete siempre han estado difusos, la inmediatez en la comunicación de las noticias que iban ocurriendo durante la pandemia, la comprensión de las restricciones y las nuevas vías de intercambios multilingüísticos y multiculturales forzaron una rápida adaptación a las nuevas condiciones de trabajo de los traductores e intérpretes médicos. De ahí que la interpretación profesional en el ámbito médico-sanitario ya necesitase –y ahora todavía más por los movimientos migratorios- una legislación concreta para la adecuada provisión de intérpretes que ponga fin a las barreras de acceso y lingüístico-culturales con las que se encuentran los pacientes alófonos. El presente artículo analiza la experiencia de los pacientes alófonos para poner de manifiesto la realidad con la que se encuentran y mostrar las consecuencias derivadas de la ausencia de intérpretes profesionales o el uso de intérpretes ad-hoc en los servicios médico-sanitarios. Además, también se reflexiona sobre los beneficios del uso de intérpretes profesionales para ofrecer una atención de calidad y los retos y desafíos de la situación actual de la interpretación profesional en España.

El presente estudio busca ofrecer una revisión de las propuestas de mejora que se han planteado en los últimos años en relación con los servicios lingüísticos y culturales destinados a las pacientes de origen inmigrante en el ámbito sociosanitario. A partir del análisis de dichas propuestas desde la perspectiva de las pacientes chinas que acuden a los centros de salud sexual y reproductiva en el territorio valenciano, proponemos una serie de recomendaciones aplicadas a nuestro objeto de estudio. Las sugerencias que planteamos ponen en valor la figura de los/las mediadores/as interculturales y destacan la importancia de poner a su disposición los medios necesarios para maximizar la calidad del servicio ofrecido y adaptarlo a las necesidades de las pacientes y del personal sociosanitario.
