This contribution, prepared within the Erasmus+ ReACTMe (Research & Action and Training inMedical Interpreting) project, aims at evaluating the impact of COVID-19 on access to medical interpreting and cultural mediation services in Italy. Medical  interpreters and cultural mediators, who play in Italy different although often overlapping roles, are particularly significant in removing language barriers to healthcare and social inclusion, despite the notable variation in the provision of these services in each European member state. Italy has been one of the first countries in Europe to be substantially affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in February 2020, going into lockdown as early as the beginning of March, and cancelling all non-urgent medical consultations in an effort to prevent the collapse of ICUs. A similar pattern was observed during the subsequent waves of the pandemic when healthcare services were provided to non-COVID patients although with limitations. To what extent were medical interpreting/cultural mediation services affected and how has this impacted non-Italian-speaking patients? This contribution presents the results obtained through an online survey submitted to medical interpreters/cultural mediators from all over Italy between November 2020 andJanuary 2021. The results reveal that the pandemic has negatively affected the provision of medicalinterpreting/cultural mediation services with remote communication only partially making up for the lack of onsite language support and creating new challenges for both interpreters/cultural mediators and healthcare professionals.

With the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, in the United States, social, educational, and health services, in addition to legal proceedings and conferences, became accessible primarily through various remote technologies. Language access was almost exclusively provided through remote telecommunication platforms, audio and/or video.  Many of these platforms were not optimized nor designed for interpreting support. Service providers, interpreters, and their Limited English Proficient (LEP) clients, were faced with increased communication and logistical challenges and had to get creative in their endeavors in order to ensure minimal disruption and continuity of care and service provision. This study explores remote interpreting in pediatric therapy settings. More specifically, it examines both the benefits and the challenges of remote interpreting in speech, physical, and occupational therapy settings. It considers how different remote communication platforms may impact role boundaries and turn-taking from both the provider’s and the interpreter’s perspective.

Crisis communication and linguistic diversity in Norway during the COVID-19 pandemic: Focus on interpreting and translation services 2019

The Covid-19 pandemic has affected some inhabitants of Norway more than others. Even in the first wave, foreign-born immigrants had more confirmed infections and were hospitalized more frequently than other residents (Indseth et al., 2020). One factor seems to be a lack of information in languages other than Norwegian. Strategic communication of pandemic policies to those who do not speak Norwegian has not functioned on an operational or a grassroots level (NOU, 2021, p. 175). However, after some initial confusion, translations of government information become available on a multitude of platforms. Public service employees,  NGOs, and mediators were involved in targeted information campaigns. This article traces the state of translation and interpretation, including availability, accessibility, acceptability, and adaptability, during the first year  and a half of the Covid-19 pandemic (March 2020 – September 2021) in Norway. Among other issues, the article highlights the importance of making translation and interpreting essential services in future contingency plans.

The implementation of the Center of Interpreting and Translation in indigenous languages in Peru during the COVID-19 pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic has unveiled the importance of proper communication for public health, especially in multilingual contexts where speakers of minority languages have not had proper access to information in their languages, like indigenous peoples. Different approaches have been taken at national, regional, and local levels in this regard. In Peru, the COVID-19 pandemic enhanced the need for a government-driven provision of translation and interpreting in indigenous languages, especially in health care services. To that end, the Peruvian Government created a Centre of Interpreting and Translation in Indigenous Languages, a leading experience in the region. This paper aims at providing an overview of its implementation process through the analysis of the regulations behind it and the provided assistance a year after being launched to try to identify the possible implications of such implementation on how public service interpreting and translation in indigenous languages can move towards an articulated model of government-driven language services.

The COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly affected the health of individuals, societies, and the global economy. It has also transformed the ways of working and communicating. In the educational field, there are numerous studies that show the necessary adaptation that was conducted throughout the world, with cases of success and challenges that caused profound transitions and innovations inside and outside the classroom. Since the eruption of COVID-19 in December 2019, both institutions and individuals have had to reformulate their ways of teaching and learning. But have all these changes been negative or have they also implied a way to move forward? In the following pages we will try to answer this question with examples of studies carried out in different parts of the world as a sample of the global world we live in.
