Objectives: Menopause represents a “window of vulnerability” in women’s life. This transition comprehends many changes: physical, metabolical and psychological. It could, also, cause difficulties at work and the most problematic symptoms are poor concentration and memory, tiredness, feeling depressed and lowered confidence. Moreover food becomes, often, a practical, easy and fast solution to manage negative emotions. The aims of this pilot study were: to analyze the existence of a possible link between menopausal transition, mood, eating behavior and well-being perception on the workplace and to verify the possible influence of nutraceutical supplementation on the above mentioned factors. Method: 40 women, with mean age 52 years old and mean BMI 33.27 were enrolled and divided into two groups: diet + behavioral advices (D), or diet + behavioral advices and a nutraceutical compound (D+N) (Assist Forte Retard® 1 cp in the evening) for four months. The following psychological questionnaires were administrated at the beginning and after four months: Zung depression scale, (ZDS); Binge Eating Scale (BES); Job Content Questionnaire ( JCQ) used to measure the investigate job related stress. After the test, each woman had an individual psychological interview aimed to investigate her personal experiences, related to what come out from the results. Results: After four months: women (D+N) achieved a statistically significant improvement in both tests (ZDS p <0.0001 Bes p <0.0083). The women (D) had no statistically significant changes in BES, even if there was better management of feeding behavior, and ZDS did not show an improvement in mood. JCQ analysis showed: women (D+N) had a moderate increase of decision-making capacity (DL 64 to 66) compared with an unchanged workload ( JD 33 to 33.5); social-support perception (SS ) showed a slight improvement even if it remained below the median line of the reference sample. In the (D) group we observed a slight increase of the workload , accompanied by a reduction of the decision-making capacity (DL 74 to 69) and by a tiny lowering of the perception of the social support (SS). Conclusions: the combination of a diet program, behavioural advice and nutraceuticals, compared to the sole diet, made it possible to relieve the emotional and eating disturbs related to the menopause and to improve the perception of a satisfactory work.

This study aimed to investigate cardiometabolic responses to L-carnitine in obese women with knee osteoarthritis (OA). In this randomized double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, 50 obese women with mild to moderate knee OA were randomly allocated into 2 groups to receive 750 mg/d L-carnitine or placebo for 8 weeks. Anthropometric indices, blood pressure and atherogenic indices were measured before and after the intervention. Only 48 patients (23 in the L-carnitine group and 25 in the placebo group) completed the study. L-carnitine resulted in significant reduction in hip circumference (115.15±6.19 vs 113.57±4.89) compared with baseline (P=0.013); whilst it didn’t change body mass index, waist circumference, waist to hip and waist to height ratios significantly (P>0.05). L-carnitine led to significant reduction in systolic blood pressure compared with placebo group, adjusted for baseline values (P=0.020). Atherogenic indices didn’t change significantly in both groups through the study (P>0.05). No significant differences were observed in anthropometric measures and atherogenic indices between two groups after adjusting for baseline values and covariates (P>0.05). In conclusion, L-carnitine did not lead to significant changes in obesity-associated parameters and atherogenic indices in women with knee OA. However, long-term studies with higher doses of L-carnitine are needed to explore its efficacy as an anti-obesity and anti-atherogenic agent in OA patients.

Aim: To assess the dietary intake and dietary habits of adolescent girls belonging to low socio economic status to provide a baseline data for future intervention studies, a community based descriptive analytical study was conducted. Method: Unmarried adolescent girls, who had had their first menarche, were selected through convenience sampling. Informed verbal consent was obtained from the participants and their parents. Three days dietary recall was used to gather dietary data which was analyzed according to recommended servings of food groups in MY PLATE (USDA, 2011) and through modified Healthy Eating Index (HEI) scoring. Means and percentages were calculated and the data was analyzed through SPSS version 17. Result: All the adolescents were consuming less than recommended calories for their age. More than 50% of adolescent girls were taking less than half the required calories. About 74 % adolescents were skipping one meal or another at least four times a week. Majority of adolescent girls80% were not con-suming even a single serving from fruit group. The mean HEI score was also very low (29/100) and fell into poor category. A strong correlation r=0.88 was found between HEI scores and caloric intake. Conclusion: Dietary intake of adolescent girls belonging to low socio economic status is far from satisfactory which does not meet the recommended diet for this age group. Intervention strategies are needed to improve the dietary intake of adolescent girls so that their requirements of energy along with other nutrients are met.

Camel milk is one of the most important milk among other mammal’s milk due to its nutraceutical attributes. It has high concentration of iron which makes it panacea for those who have iron deficiency anemia. The salts present in camel milk has significant effect on human health. It is used for various diseases in urban areas of developing countries. It is a potential functional food. In urban areas of developing economies it is used for ascites. Camel milk is unique from other ruminant milk in terms of composition as well as functionality, as it contains high concentration of immunoglobulins and insulin. People with enervated immune system and those who are lactase-deficient can consume camel milk without any allergic response. Moreover, it is also used for potential therapeutic properties such as efficacy against diabetes and cancer as well as having anti-hypertensive properties.

Objective: Olive oil (OO) is a typical Mediterranean product which influences positively the human health, that has been well-recognized since ancient times. Numerous substances isolated from OO, in particular from extra virgin olive oil (EVOO), are still the subjects of extensive scientific researches. The objective of this review was to bring together rather scattered information on the remedial constituents of OO, as well as available data on their pharmacodynamic actions. Material and Methods: For this analysis, we searched for studies on the remedial substances of OO published in English on the PubMed in 2005-2015, in which the pharmacodynamic actions of OO were investigated. We considered studies which were conducted on cell lines and experimental animals, as well as clinical trials. We excluded studies where pharmacodynamic actions of the mentioned substances could not be precisely distinguished and described. Results: Oleic acid decreases the concentration and oxidation of LDL, reduces the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases, as well as possesses some anti-tumor activities. Oleuropein exhibits neuro-, hepato- and cardioprotective activities, possesses hypotensive and anti-inflammatory effects, as well as strong potential in prevention of colon and breast cancer. Hydroxytyrosol possesses pronounced anti-oxidant properties, as well as anti-inflammatory, anti-platelet and anti-tumor activities. Tyrosol exhibits anti-oxidant properties that are less pronounced than those of hydroxytyrosol. Conclusion: OO has multiple beneficial effects of protecting the humans’ health and even of preventing and/or treating different diseases. Additional measures should be taken to encourage the production and consumption of OO globally, as well as to inform and educate the professional and general public about its favorable pharmacodynamic actions on human health.

Material and Methods: For this analysis, we searched for studies on the remedial substances of OO published in English on the PubMed in 2005-2015, in which the pharmacodynamic actions of OO were investigated. We considered studies which were conducted on cell lines and experimental animals, as well as clinical trials. We excluded studies where pharmacodynamic actions of the mentioned substances could not be precisely distinguished and described. Results: Oleic acid decreases the concentration and oxidation of LDL, reduces the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases, as well as possesses some anti-tumor activities. Oleuropein exhibits neuro-, hepato- and cardioprotective activities, possesses hypotensive and anti-inflammatory effects, as well as strong potential in prevention of colon and breast cancer. Hydroxytyrosol possesses pronounced anti-oxidant properties, as well as anti-inflammatory, anti-platelet and anti-tumor activities. Tyrosol exhibits anti-oxidant properties that are less pronounced than those of hydroxytyrosol. Conclusion: OO has multiple beneficial effects of protecting the humans’ health and even of preventing and/or treating different diseases. Additional measures should be taken to encourage the production and consumption of OO globally, as well as to inform and educate the professional and general public about its favorable pharmacodynamic actions on human health.","PeriodicalId":20600,"journal":{"name":"Progress in Nutrition","volume":"20 1","pages":"30-38"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-08-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46309854","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The yoghurt industry is presently booming with the introduction of new tart flavors in the row while green tea is emerging as a proven health-beneficial drink in the market. An amalgamation of the two brings in a healthy, tasty and filling platter in today’s food souk. Besides, addition of a hint of chocolate will help to enrich the flavor of the product by masking the bitterness of green tea. A blend of all these will surely be satisfying both the nutrition and taste quotient, as desired by today’s health-conscious and indulgence-seeking consumers in the growing markets. With this view, green tea infused chocolate flavored yoghurt was developed from double toned milk with infusion of green tea and addition of chocolate syrup at the rate of 2% (w/v) and 9% (v/v) respectively. Yoghurt was procured from local market and used as starter culture. The innoculum level of 2% (w/v) yielded a product having good setting properties with no syneresis which was preferred most by the sensory panelists. After setting the yoghurt, honey was added to obtain a product with smooth texture, semisolid consistency and sweet taste and aroma. A storage study of the final product was also carried out against plain yoghurt in refrigerated condition (7±1°C) whereby its sensory, physico-chemical and microbiological quality were monitored to approximately determine its shelf life. The shelf life of the formulated yoghurt was found to be 21 days under refrigerated conditions as compared to 15 days for plain yoghurt under same condition.
