Study Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between the biomarkers of serum CRP, PCT, D-dimer, ferritin, and lymphocytes, and the survival of COVID-19 patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Methods: The effect of acute phase reactants on survival were retrospectively examined in 399 patients diagnosed with COVID-19 and followed up in the ICU of Afyonkarahisar Health Sciences University Medical Faculty Hospital between 20 March 2020 and 31 December 2020. Results: The 399 patients included in the study comprised 273 (68.4%) males and 126 (31.6%) females with a median age of 68 years (IQR: 15 years). Mortality developed in 225 (56.4%) patients in ICU and 174 (43.6%) were discharged. In the ROC analysis applied to CRP, PCT, D-dimer, ferritin levels, and lymphocyte count, the AUC values were determined in the range of 0.389-0.635. D-dimer was the parameter with the highest AUC value. In the survival analysis according to the cutoff values determined for CRP, PCT, D-dimer, and lymphocyte count, these four parameters were determined to have an effect on survival (p = 0.038, p = 0.001, p = 0.012, and p = 0.018, respectively). Ferritin levels were found to be similar between the groups of survivors and nonsurvivors (p = 0.492). Conclusion: High serum CRP, PCT, D-dimer levels, and low lymphocyte count were determined to be associated with poor outcomes in the 399 patients admitted to the ICU with a diagnosis of severe COVID-19 pneumonia.

Background: It is anticipated that the fear caused by the possible consequences of Covid-19 virus transmission and the sense of restraint caused by control applications such as quarantine may affect individuals', especially employees' psychological parameters and change their habits. Objectives: The aim of this study is explaining the effect of pandemic conditions and precautionary practices on the psychological parameters and nutritional habits of employees. Methods: In this direction, The SCL-90-R test, which was applied to 400 office workers before the pandemic, was reapplied during the pandemic period and the differences between the psychological symptoms were evaluated statistically. In addition, a mini questionnaire was applied on the change of daily nutritional habits after the pandemic. Results: In the period of pandemic compared to before the pandemic;a definite statistical difference was determined in somatization, interpersonal sensitivity, depression, anxiety, phobic anxiety, paranoid, and general symptom index symptoms. In addition, an acceptable difference was found for the increase in symptoms of paranoid ideation and obsessive-compulsive, and there was no statistical difference only in symptoms of hostility and psychoticism. In addition, it was found that the majority of the participants experienced a change in their daily eating methods. Conclusion: The increase in almost all of the psychological parameters is not evidence of psychological diseases. However, according to the average results, the parameters closest to evaluation as a problem comply with the observed behaviors in pandemic conditions. The change in nutrition methods is also thought to be a reflection of the psychological factors that changed during the pandemic period. © 2021 Mattioli 1885. All rights reserved.

Nationwide lockdown is a proven strategy to decrease inter-human transmission of the COVID-19. Prolonged home stay may be associated with some potential side effects as weight gain, depression, physical inactivity, unbalanced diet, and behavioral addiction disorders. During March-May of the social lockdown, Turkish adults (n:2955) completed an online sociodemographic form, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and Three Factor Eating Questionnaire (TFEQ)-21. During lockdown, 51.1% of the participants gained weight and TFEQ-21, emotional and uncontrolled eating scores were increased (p<0.001). Analysis showed that incraese in body weight was significantly related to the TFEQ-21 score, depression level, having a disease, decreased exercise, increased alcohol consumption, dismissal from work and reduced smoking (p<0.001). There were significant changes in uncontrolled and emotional eating, and cognitive restriction during the lockdown period. Additionally, changes in eating habits and physical activity may influence weight gain.

Study Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate nutritional approaches in university students during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A total of 579 university students (male: 296, female: 283) participated in the study. Besides the personal form, the students filled out a nutrition approach testing questionnaire. Students participated voluntarily. The surveys were conducted on social media. Independent sample t and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) were applied to analyze the difference in groups. Results: Nutrition scores on the days of curfew (Lockdown) and the days when there is no prohibition or restriction did not change according to gender (p>0.05). A significant difference was found in the nutrition scores of the students according to the levels they felt on the days when there was a curfew and, on the days, when there was no prohibition or restriction (p<0.05). A significant difference was found between the scores of the students of different faculties on the days when there was a curfew and, on the days, when there was no prohibition or restriction (p<0.05). Conclusion: It has been determined that the nutritional habits of university students do not change according to gender in the event of prohibition and restriction or not during the coronavirus epidemic. While the nutritional habits of university students were similar according to gender, it was found that they changed according to the type of faculty. The nutritional habits of the faculty students who received education on health were found to be better. Those who feel bad have lower nutritional scores. During the coronavirus epidemic, it is recommended to provide psychological assistance to students in support of nutrition, whether there are curfews, bans, or days when there is no ban.

Result: There were 95 applications scored in the range of 4.5-5.0 points. 56% of the applications were paid and 44% were free. 35% of users preferred free and 65% paid applications. While the first application on the market was released in 2010, the last application was released in 2020. There were 72 applications released before COVID-19 and 23 applications released after. The number of downloads over the determined score of the applications was 5.0 points 0.5%, 4.9 points 39%, 4.8 points 40%, 4.7 points 8%, 4.6 points 8%, and 4.5 points 5%. Within the application, only applications for males were 20.21%, applications for females only 28.27% and applications for both males and females were 48.51%. It was determined that the usage of mobile sports applications increased during the COVID-19 pandemic. It was observed that the usage rate of females was higher than the rate of males. It was determined that most applications were in the \"health and fitness\" category according to the restriction status within the platform, and the use of paid applications was more than free ones. Conclusion: It was thought that the applications to be produced on such digital platforms to protect and increase the level of physical activity of people under epidemic diseases and similar conditions were more comprehensive and encouraging to prevent various physical, psychological, and mental negative effects of sedentary life.","PeriodicalId":20600,"journal":{"name":"Progress in Nutrition","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68834159","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Summary. Background: Infants and young children have been identified as the most nutritionally vulnerable group in catastrophic situations such as earthquakes. Malnutrition and poor feeding practices during the early years of life could adversely affect child’s growth, cognitive, physical and social development. Objectives: The objective of this study was to assess and compare nutritional status and related factors among 6-48 months old children born in the damaged rural and urban areas of Varzeghan after the 2012 earthquake. Methods: 250 children between 6-48 months living in Varzeghan and 60 damaged villages participated in this crosssectional descriptive study. Anthropometric data were gathered and the three indices of malnutrition, wasting (weight/height), underweight (weight/age) and stunting (height/age) were calculated and assessed according to z-score. These data were compared with the documented files gathered in health institutes before the earthquake. Results and Conclusion: There were statistically significant differences in wasting, underweight and stunting before and after the earthquake in different areas. The most prevalent nutritional complications according to z-score<-2 were wasting (8.8%), underweight (6.4%) and moderate-severe stunting (2.8%), respectively. The prevalence of wasting (12.8% vs. 4.2%) and underweight (8.4% vs. 2.1%) in different areas was higher in girls in comparison to boys. This study provides evidence that natural disasters inversely effect children’s nutritional health. Thus, since malnutrition still remains one of the main public health challenges in Iran and some other developing countries it is crucial to precisely assess and implement accurate intervention procedures to ensure the needs of all age groups especially young children.
