In the last twenty years, new product development (NPD) teams have been characterized by increased spatial and temporal distribution. Some authors assert that this distribution hinders the coordination of these teams, especially because it limits the opportunities for exchange as well as the use of face-to-face dialogue. Other authors consider that coordination through ICT is as effective as face-to-face communication. Although scholars have been debating this point for years, the issue has never been empirically validated in the case of NDP project teams. To fill this gap, we study the influence of technological and non-technological media on coordination by taking into account the distribution level of NPD team members. Results of PLS modelling indicate that the effect of the various media on coordination varies according to the level of spatial and temporal distribution. The results dispute the relevance of face-to-face exchanges when project teams are highly distributed, teams in which coordination is frequently based on the use of ICT (for design support and for task organization). Therefore, this study indicates that the richness of media does not alone explain the media’s efficiency. We also contribute to the literature which tends to equate team distribution to the media type by showing that the two concepts are different.

Despite growing efforts to improve software development processes, recurring concerns about software project performance remain largely present. The rate of software development project failure rate has been routinely documented in information systems (IS) research (Wallace, 2004; El-Masry and Rivard, 2010). The management of software development projects is often marked by inadequate planning, a poor grasp of the overall development process, and no clear management framework, even as the focus in software development shifts from a technology perspective to a more process-centric view (Slaughter, 2006). To address such concerns few CMM-based studies have examined the benefits and direct impact of software process maturity on software project performance but with mixed results. The present paper attempts to systematically examine the contingent role of software development risk on the impact of software process maturity level on software project performance. Guided by risk-based perspective in Software Engineering and CMM-based framework, an exploratory model was developed and tested. The premise of this paper is that software development risk plays a contingent role in the relationship between software process maturity and software project performance. Drawing on a sample of 107 organizations that have undergone official CMM appraisals, the results of partial least squares analysis of the data reveal initial evidence that (1) a positive effect of software process maturity level on software project performance while underscoring the negative effect of software development risk on software project performance, and (2) more importantly, the findings show that software development risk plays a contingent role software process maturity level on software project performance. For researchers, the integration of software development risk can provide a much needed linkage in the three fundamental constructs of CMM. From a managerial perspective, in order to foster a better software project performance, IS project leaders and managers should strongly emphasize devising effective software development risk assessment since a variation of this construct’s level may strengthen or weaken the relationship between software development process maturity and software project performance.

The aim of this article is to better understand how service companies, which were initially non-profit organizations, can develop a commercial activity in open source software. From a theoretical point of view, the strategic behavior of firms is influenced by social rules to which they must, at least partially, comply in order to seem legitimate. At the methodological level, this research builds on the work of Lisein et al. (2009) who have identified four key dimensions in the ideology of the OSS. A quantitative study on a sample of 71 Open Source Software Companies (OSSC) allows highlighting three strategic behaviors. Two of them represent hybridization strategies, while the third is much closer to a strict commercial logic. Then, the qualitative study of three cases of OSSC, that were previously sampled, were used to better understand the benefits that these companies expect from interacting with the non-commercial sphere and the strategic maneuvers they deploy. Our results confirm that OSSC are positioning themselves on the four generic principles constituting the ideology of OSS. Therefore Lisein et al. (2009) Model seems validated. However, our observations show that it is possible to combine market and non-market logics with different behaviors. These behaviors are distinguished on three key dimensions: the discussions with the open source community relationship, the type of legitimacy sought, the strategic maneuvers deployed. This research may well be of particular interest to managers of OSSC to better understand the consequences and implications of their strategic positioning choices between market and non-market sphere.

In this article, we propose to revisit the concept of strategic alignment in a practice-based perspective. We propose new insights on this concept which has mostly been studied in the literature through Henderson and Venkatraman’s strategic alignment model (1993). In a grounded approach, we study practitioners’ daily practices through the in-depth investigation of three corporate cases and interviews with six consultants specialized in the management of information systems (IS). We use actor-network theory as a theoretical framework to help us make sense of and interpret our data. We propose a new, conceptual, non-functionalist model, which integrates several streams of literature: the translated strategic alignment model (TSAM). This model may serve as a help to drive toward a critical level of alignment that appears as necessary to clear the path toward competitive advantage.

Q-method has been invented in 50’s by William Stephenson, a psychologist, in order to explore human subjectivity. It is now regularly used in several social sciences and humanities. Research in information systems is an exception with only 14 empirical Q-studies since the first one in 1987. The Q-method has however several strengths and contributes to explore central aspects in IS such as perceptions, interpretations, social representations. The aim of this article is to propose a view of the methodological opportunities this method offers to ISR as well as an illustration of its use in the m-commerce field. It is thus an invitation to use this still underutilized method.
