In this paper a 3 bit chipless RFID tag able to be printed using mass production techniques is introduced. The structure proposed is based on dipole like structures and three of such dipoles conforms a tag. Several chipless RFID tag prototypes were fabricated on PET substrate and measured within the frequency band from 2 GHz to 5 GHz. In contrast to the already reported printed tags where inkjet printing is used, the proposed tag is fabricated using screen printing techniques which enable fast mass production of tags in a very short time with thick conductive tracks of ~10 um. A good agreement between simulation and measurement was obtained and a reading distance up to 1 m is obtained with a transmission power of 3 dBm. The obtained results confirm the use of low cost printed tags for mass market applications.

The reduction of standby power consumption is a priority in the development of electronic devices. We propose a system that minimizes this standby power in home automation or multimedia systems. This system is composed of a 2.45 GHz emitter and a receiver with a sensitivity of -22 dBm (higher than a receiver directly supplied). This receiver implies a difficult link budget contrary to classical receiver sensitivity (-80 or -90 dBm). That is why the antennas have a very important role because they must be totally optimized to avoid link budget degradation. Moreover, this system is dedicated to mass market applications. As a result, all the materials and manufacturing process concerning the antennas must be as versatile as possible to be integrated in different cases and cheap to manufacture. To satisfy these objectives, we present a generic design of parasitic element antennas that are suited to both the emitter and the receiver. Measurements results are presented to validate the design.

For the parametrization of geometry based stochastic channel models as from the IST-WINNER or COST 273/IC1004 initiatives large data analysis from channel sounding campaigns play an important role. Whereby the reliability of cluster charaterisation as a post-processing step after the high resolution multipath estimation exhibits a crucial issue. In this contribution a framework for evaluation and development of different cluster algorithms is discussed. Furthermore a novel hierarchical algorithm is introduced and compared to standard K-means and Fuzzy-C-means algorithms. Whereby the new algorithm outperforms the standard algorithms wrt. increasing number and size of clusters.

In the context of the EVEREST project, we performed Multipactor simulations of different RF samples for L- and Ku- band using CST Particle StudioTM. The RF devices evaluated in this work explore different configurations such as parallel plates, coaxial filters and Iris structures. Using a variety of measurement facilities of Secondary Electron Yields (SEY), cross validation is investigated between the new Multipactor power thresholds results and thresholds using the available SEY parameters given in ECSS. The optimization criteria to acquire accurate results are also provided.

A metal-only reflectarray (MOR) antenna for 77 [GHz] was analyzed with the equivalent surface current sources. The equivalent current sources can be used to produce the incident fields radiated from a feed. When a feed is an open-ended rectangular waveguide (OERW), the calculated antenna gains for the equivalent current sources, point source, and CST Microwave Studio (MWS) are 31.8, 30.0, and 31.6 [dBi], respectively. The simulated results of the equivalent current sources and CST MWS are in good agreement with each other in terms of the antenna gain.

A multiband coupled on-board printed handset antenna capable of providing wideband operation for GSM 1800/1900, UMTS and LTE 2300/2500 is presented. Antenna consists of coupling monopole resonators which are extended from the feed and main ground plan to accommodate integration with circuit board of mobile handset. Antenna can easily be fabricated with the help of extended line and ground without disturbing main circuit board of handset, considering the presence of protruded components over circuit board. The antenna design uses fork-shaped monopole coupling resonators extended from active element and ground plane. These resonators along with prolonged length from patch and ground, as a function of resonating wavelength, control the bandwidth of antenna. Monopoles driven from patch and ground contribute the lowest and higher order resonant modes to form three wide operating bands centered at about 1800, 2500 and 5200MHz to cover GSM1800/1900/UMTS/LTE2300/2500. The results of this study confirmed that extended planner monopoles couple to form lower and higher resonant modes. This study provides new understanding on coupling monopole resonators and their application in handset antenna designing.

This paper presents investigations of longitudinally magnetized left-handed cylindrical ferrite coupled line junction for nonreciprocal devices. The proposed junction is formed as a quasi periodic arrangement of N unit cells. Each unit cell is realized as a cascade of short cylindrical ferrite coupled lines with reactance circuit composed of series capacitors and parallel inductors. The left-handed cylindrical junction with π/4 Faraday rotation was designed with the use of own software. Promising results concerning size reduction of the ferrite junction in comparison to known in literature conventional one were obtained. In order to examine nonreciprocal properties of the designed junction its calculated scattering parameters were used to predict the behavior of three-port circulator. The obtained results confirmed usefulness of the proposed left-handed cylindrical junction in the design of Faraday nonreciprocal devices.

The extended version of the Characteristic Basis Function Method (CBFM-E) is applied to the problem of electromagnetic scattering in a forested area. A non-uniform mesh is used to discretize the forest elements, to avoid over-discretization of the electromagnetic problem and thereby to reduce the burden on the associated computing time and memory resources. The results obtained with a fine uniform mesh are included to validate those derived with the non-uniform mesh, adapted to the dielectric properties of the trees. The new approach based on nonuniform meshing, presented herein, improves the performance of the CBFM without compromising its accuracy.
