Objective: to compare the preoperative symptoms of anxiety and depression among patients submitted to the first cardiac surgery. Methods: observational, analytic and cross-sectional study. A consecutive and non-probabilistic sample consisted of patients submitted to elective cardiac surgeries, without clinical decompensation on the day of the interview. To assess the anxiety and depression symptoms, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale was used. The symptoms were compared by means of the Mann-Whitney test, α=5.0%. Results: the study participants were 80 patients submitted to the first surgery and 19 to reoperation. Patients in their first surgery presented a median score of six and reoperated patients a median score of four on the depression scale (p=0.107). Concerning the anxiety symptoms, patients in their first surgery presented a median score of eight, against six for the reoperated patients (p=0.171). Conclusion: the anxiety and depression scores were higher among the patients submitted to their first surgery, but no statistically significant difference was found between the groups.

Objective: to evaluate the patient safety culture from the perspective of the nursing team. Methods: cross-sectional design, survey-type inquiry performed with 221 nursing professionals from a University Hospital. The instrument used was the Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, the Spearman’s correlation coefficient and the Cronbach’s alpha coefficient were used in the analyses. Results: the patient safety culture has been moderately developed; teamwork within units corresponded to a strong area (75.5%) and the nonpunitive response to errors corresponded to an area for improvement (47.0%). It was observed that the greater the impression of nonexistence of problems and adequacy of the implanted systems, the better the rating assigned to the hospital. Conclusion: patient safety culture is in the process of development; the dimension with more positive answers was teamwork within units and, the one with less positive answers was nonpunitive response to errors.

It is an invitation to reflect about the evidence, the effectiveness of interventions and expectations surrounding health professionals within the hospital context, mainly nurses, regarding the urgent and emergency settings. The text does not specifically deal with a single theme, but a complex, subliminal and undocumented issue that is not said in the everyday work of nursing professionals. It draws attention to the topic of mental health, particularly the suicidal ideation, which is taken as the most significant risk factor resulting from depression and work environment.

Objective: to verify the association between sociodemographic conditions and the involvement of pregnant women with drugs. Methods: a cross-sectional study was carried out with 268 pregnant women in a public maternity hospital, through an interview. For the bivariate analysis Fisher’s Exact Test and odds ratio with 95% confidence interval were used. Results: statistically significant associations were observed between the use of psychoactive substances by pregnant women and schooling (p=0.017), race (p=0.020) and housing condition (p=0.014). Conclusion: it was evidenced that different factors contribute to the occurrence of vulnerability to health among pregnant women, mainly resulting from the integration of individual and social aspects.

Objective: to verify the association between maternal and neonatal factors and the Apgar score <7 at five minutes of life. Methods: cross-sectional study with 134 newborns. For the analysis of the data collected through an instrument developed by the researchers, we used the description of the absolute and relative frequencies and applied the Chi-square or Fisher’s exact tests. Results: of the total number of newborns, 63.0% had primigravida mother, 56.0% were male, 79.0% had been born from normal delivery, 65.0% had required oxygen and 45.0% had been resuscitated in the delivery room. Among women, 71.0% had made use of oxytocin. Conclusion: use of oxytocin, oxygen and resuscitation in the delivery room showed a significant association with Apgar <7 at five minutes of life. Birth weight, rupture membrane time, meconium clearance, type of delivery, and parity were not related to the low Apgar score.

Objective: understanding the perspective of professors of nursing courses on the challenges faced in the process of curricular reconstruction. Methods: a qualitative research with 21 nursing professors from six Higher Education Institutions. The data analysis was carried out using the hermetic and dialectic technique. Results: there are difficulties in curricular reorganization in relation to teacher training according to the new social requirements and a lack of integration of the different knowledge areas. There are also aggravating factors such as knowledge gaps in high school students, the distance between education and the working world, and a lack of interest in becoming a nurse. Conclusion: according to the professors’ perceptions there is positive movement toward curricular organization, despite the outstanding challenges involved in nurses’ training/education such as the lack of teacher training for dealing with innovative proposals, the distance between the working world and the training process, little social valorization of the profession, and the low quality of primary and secondary education in Brazil.
