Objective: to understand the perspective of health professionals on care for people with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. Methods: this is a qualitative approach based on the Social Representation Theory based on the free speeches of 73 practitioners from four specialized public services, which were submitted to Factorial Correspondence Analysis. Results: practitioners with longer training and working time have emphasized aspects related to the syndrome such as physical degradation, abandonment and death; practitioners with shorter training and working time have represented the care of the person living with human immunodeficiency virus as an increased knowledge of sensitivity, indicating attitudes and behaviors socially constructed and accepted as belonging to health practitioners. Conclusion: practitioners with more experience have seen the syndrome in its negative and initial aspect; the newcomers to the professional practice have shown sensitivity and openness to the relevant issues of this phenomenon and concrete possibilities of more effective/transforming care practices.

Objective: to understand the perceptions of mothers about the quality of life of children with hydrocephalus. Methods: qualitative research carried out in a pediatric public hospital with twelve mothers of children with hydrocephalus. Data were collected from semi-structured interviews and the content analysis was performed. Results: according to the mothers, children with hydrocephalus had a considerable motor deficit, but some managed to perform this function properly. The emotional status had not presented a significant change; and in relation to school performance, the majority was not studying in school or could not keep up with the learning rhythm of the others, however, they managed to maintain good interpersonal relationships. Conclusion: children with hydrocephalus presented deficits in motor, educational and emotional development, but they had no impairment in interpersonal relationships, according to mothers’ perceptions.

Objective: to describe the sociodemographic characteristics associated with depressive symptoms in hospitalized elderly. Methods: cross-sectional study carried out in a public teaching hospital. The sample was composed of 96 individuals aged ≥60 years, hospitalized in a clinical and surgical unit. The data collection was performed through a semi-structured interview with the instrument Geriatric Depression Scale. The variables were described through frequencies, percentages, means and standard deviations. The Fisher’s exact test was used to assess the association with depressive symptoms. Results: a total of 45.8% of the elderly presented mild to moderate depressive symptoms and 1.0% had severe symptoms. There was a predominance of women, between 60 and 79 years old, living with a partner, with low level of education (one to seven years of schooling), Catholics, retirees or pensioners, and with a family income of up to three minimum wages. Conclusion: the labor situation presented a statistically significant association with depressive symptoms in the hospitalized elderly.

Objective: to verify the prevalence of breastfeeding of preterm infants in neonatal units. Methods: an exploratory, cross-sectional study was performed at a Child-Friendly Hospital with 21 premature infants and their mothers. Interviews and a survey of medical records were performed using a form to collect data, which were analyzed through descriptive statistics. Results: the onset of milk feeding and breastfeeding was, respectively, 61.7 hours and 17.2 days on average. At hospital discharge, 47.6% of the preterm infants were breastfed; 47.6% were on exclusive breastfeeding; and 4.8% were on artificial milk feeding. At home, there were no changes in feeding patterns at seven to fifteen days after hospital discharge. Conclusion: it is necessary to strengthen actions for promotion, protection and support that encourage the practice of breastfeeding.

Objective: to describe the violations of the fundamental rights of children and adolescents through violence. Methods: cross-sectional study of notifications of violations collected from the Information System on Protection to Children and Adolescents. Descriptive and analytical analyses were carried out by means of Chi-square tests for associations. Results: among the notifications, 61.2% were related to family and community living; 18.3% to education, culture, sport and leisure; 11.5% to freedom, respect and dignity; 8.5% to life and health; and 0.5% to professionalization and protection at work. There were 541 notifications making reference to violence, which included: 47.5% of sexual nature; white girls, 6 to 12 years old, and students, as main victims; and family members as the main perpetrators. Gender, age and schooling were associated with sexual violence. Conclusion: the fundamental rights of children and adolescents have been violated in most cases by the occurrence of violence of sexual, psychological, and physical nature, and negligence.

Objective: to describe the sociodemographic and clinical profile of patients treated with oral anticoagulants. Methods: cross-sectional study, conducted in an anticoagulation outpatient facility of a teaching hospital which is reference in cardiology. One evaluated 222 patients, through individual interviews using a structured questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results: the participants were characterized predominantly by the following characteristics: female (64.4%); brown (57.2%); low education (68.0%); poor (67.1%); most with values of the International Normalized Ratio outside the therapeutic range (57.2%); associated comorbidities; and prolonged treatment time (65.8%). Conclusion: it was evident a predominantly female group, with low socioeconomic status, associated comorbidities and prolonged treatment time with oral anticoagulants. It constitutes the biggest part of a vulnerable group whose characteristics can affect the quality of the treatment, and with characteristics related to the particular culture of northeastern Brazil, not found in anticoagulation outpatient facilities in other regions of the country.

Objective: to evaluate the factors associated with frailty syndrome in elderly women in an outpatient clinic. Methods: cross-sectional study with 252 elderly women. The Mini Mental State Examination and the Edmonton Frail Scale were applied. The association of variables was performed using simple linear regression (Fisher’s F and Student’s t tests), p≤0.05. Results: there was prevalence of married women (44.4%) with low schooling (50.0%) and living with relatives (50.8%). Among them, 28.6% had mild, 13.0% moderate and 3.6% severe frailty. The factors associated with the syndrome were age (p=0.021), level of education (p=0.001), living with relatives (p=0.013), illnesses (p=0.023), falls (p=0.001) and hospitalization in the last 12 months (p=0.001). Conclusion: evidenced that almost half of the sample presented some type of frailty. Thus, it is important to evaluate this population frequently, considering the associated factors that can contribute to frailty.
