We study the lasing eigenvalue problem for a generic open dielectric resonator with gain material. The gain is introduced within the active region via the “active” imaginary part of the refractive index. Each eigenvalue is constituted of two positive numbers, namely, the lasing wavenumber and the threshold value of material gain. This approach yields clear insight into the lasing thresholds of individual modes. The Optical Theorem, if applied to the lasing-mode field, puts familiar “gain=loss” condition on firm footing. It enables us to rigorously introduce the conception of the volume of an open resonator and then the effective-mode volume, both for the passive cavities and cavities with active regions.

We consider the problem of electromagnetic waves emission by a horizontal electrical dipole in the presence of a thin high-contrast dielectric disk. To find the solution of the problem we use analytical-numerical scheme which is based on the dual integral equations and the method of analytical regularization. We present the normalized radiation patterns and total radiated power for different values of geometrical and material parameters.

Investigation of compact slab guide resonators with variable geometry, guide material and surface quality by automated scanning interferometer with high precision positioning system has been performed. Obtained optimization criteria are used to improve parameters of compact (including dimensions up to less then some cm) slab guide and multi pass laser resonators. On the other hand very high sensitivity to resonator surface quality and internal media properties allows to use such a structure as instrumentation for development of optical and fiber optical (chemical, biomedical etc.) sensors.

The immense growth of the Internet which is accompanied by the emergence of new communication technologies, applications, and devices, results in the evolution from voice-centric toward data-centric optical networks. In this paper we overview some of the trends in optical packet networking and identify several related research problems. Our particular focus is on the network layer aspects of future optical networks.

We formulate the on-axis asymptotic scintillations of sinusoidal and hyperbolic Gaussian beams, namely cos and cosh Gaussian beam, under strong turbulence conditions. Our results are displayed in the form of plots of the scintillation index against propagation distance and wavelength at several source and propagation parameters. It is revealed that at small source sizes, cosh Gaussian beams will exhibit the lowest scintillations, but at large source sizes, this will reverse and cos Gaussian beams will attain such characteristics. It is further found that in strong turbulence, longer wavelengths will offer less scintillations, a behavior similar to the one, encountered in weak scintillation conditions.

Holographic sensors based on the hydrogels containing N-acryloyl-m-aminophenylboronic acid (N-AMB) sensitive to glucose in model solution and serum in physiological concentration (1–20 mM). The reflection (wave length max) and the shift of wave length max was influenced on the additive to polymer net. When N-acryloyl-2-glucosamine, N-AMB hydrogel was used the shift of wave length m ax was achieved 40 nm/mM when glucose concentration was increased in 0,01 M glicine solution (pH 7,4).

The development of low-cost Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor (SHWS), based on USB2-interface of CMOS camera, is presented in this report. The description of main principle of SHWS and example of wavefront measurements are given. A comparative characteristics and spheres of sensors applications, based on USB-2 and IEEE-1394 types interfaces, are shown below. But certainly there are advantages and disadvantages of each type of these sensors. That is why each type has more suitable spheres of application. This is the subject of our discussions.

The technological regimes of production of the reflective coat with low energy losses for He-Ne laser mirrors have been worked-off on the base of environmentally safe film-forming material (FFM) Sm2Ti2O7 developed for high-refractive layers and convenient FFM SiO2. The experimental specimens of coat have been produced using the optimized technology. They are characterized by scattering factor σ = 0.010–0.015 %; absorption index к = 0.001–0.005 %. The optical characteristics of the obtained specimens have been studied.

We describe multi-dither adaptive optical system based on Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor. RMS of the wavefront is minimized to get the best correction of the aberrated laser beam. Hill-climbing algorithm is used to determine voltages to be applied to the electrodes of a bimorph mirror which is used as a wavefront corrector.
